A package for visualizing R syntax
Dear all, I have written a small set of functions for drawing graphical representations of R objects and evaluations of R expressions. It is mainly intended for pedagogical purposes. Here are some samples: http://panini.u-paris10.fr/~sloiseau/sampleGraphics.pdf The idea is to use some graphical conventions in order to make clear the abstract syntax and to explain function, extraction,

Backup - suggestions needed....
Linux RH 7.3, Samba 2.2.7a NT 4.0 SP6 - Backup Exec 8.5 The linux box is running the Backup Exec client for Unix ('http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/192093.htm') Occasionally, when doing a backup the entire linux system freezes. I have to do a hard reboot without a shutdown, etc. There is 40 plus gigs on the backup, so I dont think a tar and copy would be bery efficient. I am

Default for bin limits in hist()
Hello all. I noticed that the default setting for breaks in the construction of histograms in hist() is ?right = TRUE?. I think ?right=FALSE? would be more consistent with usual definitions of lower and upper limits for bins in applied statistics, and I suggest that you consider making it the default for hist(). For example, I generated the following frequency distribution for duration of

Vectorise a for loop?
Hi R guru coders I wrote a bit of code to add a new column onto a "topTable" dataframe. That is a list of genes processed using the limma package. I used a for loop but I kept feeling there was a better way using a more vector oriented approach. I looked at several commands such as "apply", "by" etc but could not find a good way to do it. I have this feeling there

problem with loop to put data into array with missing data forsome files
Hi Jenny If you want a general solution I understand. However I just downloaded the file fine (as far as I can tell) so you are welcome to have a copy. I can email it to you if you want. I do not think your test for NA is valid. i.e if(test != "NA"){ } I think you should use if(is.na(test)){ } Or something similar. J --- John Seers Institute of Food Research Norwich

Closing R fails
Hello All I cannot close R easily: > > q() Error in .Last() : could not find function "finalizeSession" > This seems to have started after I used the R.utils package. If I load the R.utils package I can close R successfully. But I do not want to have to do this every time I run R. Is there any way I can switch off /reverse this behaviour? (I have had a look in the

RWinEdt difficulties
Hello Everyone I have just upgraded my PC to Windows 7 (64 bit) and I have installed R 2.12.2. R seems to be working fine. I am having problems getting RWinEdt working with it though. I have tried installing WinEdt 6.0 and WinEdt 5.5. But both fail with the same error using R as 64 bit or 32 bit. I install the package using Administrator rights. > library(RWinEdt) Warning message: In

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access
Hi, Thanks for the tips. I tried with winetricks but gave me a problem to get this installed, I finally did it semi-manual. As you said I could open an sample set but nothing more. I then upgraded to wine 1.3.8 today. Will this overwrite the winetricks dll's or not? I could start the application open and save a dataset although they seem to be empty!?. I started to move deeper into the

Getting information encoded in a SAS, SPSS or Stata command file into R.
Dear folks ? I have a large (26 gig) ASCII flat file in fixed-width format with about 10 million observations of roughly 400 variables. (It is 51 years of Current Population Survey micro data from IPUMS, roughly half the fields for each record). The file was produced by automatic process in response to a data request of mine. The file is not accompanied by a human-readable file giving the

Getting JRI/rJava to work
Hello All I am trying to get the JRI examples from rJava to work on Windows XP and failing. (And as a more general and connected question is there any review/summary of front-end software for R?) I have installed rJava from the Windows binary supplied. I compile and run the example supplied (rtest.java) and get the results below. I do not think the notes about a deprecated API are a problem. user-space heartbeat ptaches from suse
Hi everyone. Does anyone know why the user-space heartbeat (linux-ha) patches from SuSE / Novell are not commited to the mainline ocfs2 source tree? Or are they? Is there an easy way (which does not break the distros package management) to apply these? Thanks, Christian

Help please..
Hello R-world, I am facing a peculiar problem and hope someone out there can comment on it. In goodness-of-fit tests for evaluation of distributions, there are three well-known methods: 1. Chi-square 2. Anderson-Darling 3. Kolmogorov-Sminrov I am trying to use the second test. Many researchers have reported results using this test. I wrote programs in C and now in R to do this. I run into

FXS - Init Indirect Registers UNSUCCESSFULLY.
I'm having problems with a TDM22B. The FXO modules work fine. Both FXS modules fail to initialized. The error messages I see when the module loads: Init Indirect Registers UNSUCCESSFULLY. Indirect Registers failed verification. I already RMA'ed a TDM22B because of this problem. Now that the replacement shows a similar issue, I want to see if anyone else can think of something to

RFC: LTO should use -disable-llvm-verifier
The verifier takes ~5% of link time when using LTO. I think we should add a `-disable-llvm-verifier` option to the LTO plugins, and change the clang driver to pass the option through in release builds. In asserts builds, the clang driver would not pass the option. This would match the way the driver passes -disable-llvm-verifier to -cc1. Everyone on board?

Accessing the elements of a list
Hi R, I wanted to know how do we access the elements of a list. In particular, v=list(c(1,2,3,4,5),c(1,2,33,4,5),c(1,2,333,4,5),c(1,2,3333,4,5)) I want to access all the thirds items of the elements of the list. i.e., I want to access the elements, 3,33,333,3333. This can be done through sapply as: sapply(v,function(x) x[3]) But I need to access this without using
