R vs SPSS
Dear all, in last weeks you discussed about R vs SAS. I want to ask your opinion about a comparison between R and SPSS. I don't know this software, but some weeks ago I went to a presentation of this product. I found it really user-friendly with GUI (even if I'd prefer command line) and very usefull and simple to use in creation and managing tables, OLAP tecniques, pivot table. What you

R client connection OLAP cube (SQL Analysis Services / PivotTable Service)
I have been doing data analysis/modeling in R, connecting to SQL databases with RODBC (winXP client with R1.9.0 and win2k SQL server 2000). I am now trying to leverage some of the OLAP features to keep the data intensive tasks on the DB server side and only keep the analytical tasks within R (optimize use of memory). Is there any package that would allow to connect to OLAP cubes (as a client

Who wants to take a stab at IO.foreach?
Hi all, Anyone want to help with a native IO.foreach? I''m missing some of the critical logic here. This currently just does a straight BYTE_MAX data read, instead of a line by line data read, and doesn''t deal with lines split between multiple reads. I checked strtok into CVS (for windows-pr) if anyone wants to use that instead of String#split. It''s in

Major difference in multivariate analyses SPSS and R
Dear colleagues, I know SPSS can not compute linear mixed models. I used 'R' before for computing multivariate analyses. But, I never encountered such a major difference in outcome between SPSS and 'R': In SPSS the Pearson correlation between variable 1 and variable 2 is 31% p<0.001. In SPSS binary logistic regression gives us an Odds Ratio (OR)=4.9 (95% CI 2.7-9.0),

Major difference in the outcome between SPSS and R statistical programs
Dear collegues, I have used R statistical program, package 'lmer', several times already. I never encountered major differences in the outcome between SPSS and R. ...untill my last analyses. Would some know were the huge differences come from. Thanks in advance, Ronald In SPSS the Pearson correlation between variable 1 and variable 2 is 31% p<0.001. In SPSS binary logistic

Major difference in the outcome between SPSS and R statisticalprograms
First off, Marc Schwartz posted this link earlier today, read it. http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#Why-are-p_002dvalues-not-di splayed-when-using-lmer_0028_0029_003f Second, your email is not really descriptive enough. I have no idea what OR is, so I have no reaction. Third, you're comparing estimates from different methods of estimation. lmer will give standard errors that

We've sent this position out to SF Bay Area schools. Since we have standardized on R as our preferred analytics platform it seemed appropriate to post here. Giving a first good impression of R to Social Scientists
Dear all, in the coming Winter Semester, I will be a teaching assistant for a course in Survival Analysis. My job will be to do the lab sessions. The software used for these lab sessions will be R. Most of the students have a background in social sciences and the only stats package they used so far is most likely SPSS. So I assume they might be quite surprised the first time they see R

re ad.spss (foreign) conflict with SPSS 17 files.
SPSS seems to have changed its default datafile format, resulting in issues for read.spss(). In Windows this results in a warning, in Debian the import completely fails: Debian (R version 2.8.0 (2008-10-20) i486-pc-linux-gnu, foreign_0.8-29) > read.spss("/home/jeroen/samples/Tomato.sav") Error in iconv(names(rval), cp, "") : unsupported conversion from 'CP65001'

read.spss (package foreign) and SPSS 15.0 files
Hello, does anyone have experience with reading SPSS Version 15.0 files into R (version 2.4.1, WinXP)? I have long been sucessfully reading SPSS files with read.spss from the wonderful foreign package, but somehow after upgrading from SPSS14 to SPSS15 I seem to have problems. Trying a simple example, where test.sav is a SPSS 15.0 data file consisting of x1=c(1,2,3) and

I get the same warning with read.spss. Warning message: C:/temp/Data.sav: Unrecognized record type 7, subtype 16 encountered in system file This is a stupid

Mutable models based on dbfunctions or stored procs?
Is there any way that a model can be based on a stored procedure or function that so that it can return a set of data based on a parameter provided in either the controller, or s a variable in the model? That way you could: 1) Set the variable 2) Call find_all 3) Get a mutable set of results that takes better advantage of some of the advanced database features available?

SAS, SPSS Product Comparison Table
Hi All, My paper "R for SAS and SPSS Users" received a bit more of a reaction than I expected. I posted the link (http://oit.utk.edu/scc/RforSAS&SPSSusers.pdf) about 12 days ago on R-help and the equivalent SAS and SPSS lists. Since then people have downloaded it 5,503 times and I've gotten lots of questions along the lines of, "Surely R can't do for free what [fill in

Hi Jake, I had and still have got the same problem. There were two columns in the data frame which contain just missing values. Jon talks of SPSS Inc's involvement with the Open Source, of scripting languages

read.spss issues
Someone supplied me with a small SPSS datafile that caused a buffer overflow and then a crash when reading it in R. It seems like a pretty serious issue to me. Unfortunately I can't supply the dataset at hand and I have a hard time reproducing it with a toy example. But I found at least 2 issues that might be related. The first one is that when the spss dataset has a 'string' variable

R Textbook for SAS and SPSS Users
Dear Lists, I got the chance to review Bob Muenchen's book - R for SAS and SPSS users. While my detailed review is online at www.decisionstats.com, the book is a welcome addition in R Textbooks for beginners and an especially nice one for people who have experience in SAS and /or SPSS languages. AT 50 USD, it's reasonably priced for all geographies (;) , and quite handy as a refernce book
