reshape (was: Comparing rows in a dataframe)
Hi all: I solved the previous stated problem in something of a brute force way (but it works). I seem to now be running into one little hiccup using reshape. Here is a quick snip of the data in long format: grade stability year schid 6 Grade 4 3 2001 100005 7 Grade 4 3 2002 100005 8 Grade 4 2 2003 100005 10 Grade 5 2 2001 100005 11 Grade 5

Concatenating variables
Hi all: I'm having difficulty with something I believe is very simple, but I'm stuck. I have a large data frame that took days to clean and prepare. All I now need to do is concatenate three variables into a single column. For example, I have tenn$up, tenn$down, and tenn$stable which all have values of 1 or 0. I simply want to put all three columns together to create a pattern (e.g.,

differences between survival models between STATA and R
Dear Community, I have been using two types of survival programs to analyse a data set. The first one is an R function called aftreg. The second one an STATA function called streg. Both of them include the same analyisis with a weibull distribution. Yet, results are very different. Shouldn't the results be the same? Kind regards, J -- View this message in context:

Comparing rows in a dataframe
Hello I have a longitudinal dataframe organized in the long format and would like to make comparison between successive rows if certain conditions apply. Specifically, I have four variables of interest: grade, score, year, and schid, associated with each school with 3 measurements per school per grade, therefore the rows are temporally ordered and each school occupies multiple rows. For example,

gem question on hosted service
All, This may be a gem question (not rails) but I feel sure someone else on this list has seen this issue go by. I use a hosting service that has ROR available, but I am among the few developers using it. I am developing on a local linux box, and have been very careful to NOT use any extra gems because I might have a problem with my provider. Well ... fastercsv rocks and I wanted to use it. My

Witcher 2 on Steam
Hello, Can anyone run the Witcher 2 Steam version on linux? I can install the game, but I'm having problems with Steam trying to install vcrun2010. I got past the error by replacing the vcredits package in "/steamapps/common/witcher2/redist" with a random executable file and renamed it to "vcredist_x86.exe" - so when Steam runs that file and the file runs and exits without

understanding output of tapply/by cumsum
Dear R-users, I have a dataset with categories and numbers. I would like to compute and add cumulative numbers to the dataset. I do not understand the structure of by(...) or tapply(...) output enough to handle it. Here a small example -------------- d<-expand.grid(a=1:5,b=1:3,c=1:2) d$n = 10 * d$a + d$b +0.1* d$c Sn<-by(d$n,list(d$a,d$c),cumsum) str(Sn) --------- List of 10 $ : num

"Impossible to run" error message when using Sweave
Dear List: I have a large dataset of multiple schools. My goal is to produce a separate tex file for each school that plots some of the student achievement scores. Essentially, the aim is to develop a custom report for each school. To accomplish this, I have code for a loop that gets sourced into R and then Sweaves the multiple files to create the individual school reports. Here is the code for

Hi All, I have a small dataset named das (43 cases) in which I am trying to create a binary outcome (1/0) based on the following code: if (das$age>65 && das$bmi>30) {das$danger<-1} else das$danger<-0 I am setting a flag called 'danger' to 1 of the subject is over 65 and has a BMI > 30. I find that my statement evaluates the first record in the data.frame and

Simulate Correlated data from complex sample
Dear List: I have created some code to simulate data from a complex sample where 5000 students are nested in 50 schools. My code returns a dataframe with a variable representing student achievement at a single time point. My actual code for creating this is below. What I would like to do is generate a second column of data that is correlated with the first at .8 and has the same means within

troubles reading a text file
Dear R experts, For quite some time I have been trying to solve a mistery of reading a seemingly trouble-free text file. The data is temperature reconstruction arranged as a huge grid, preceded by seven "header lines" (which you see better if file is opened in Firefox or Chrome). This is the data (gridded temperature reconstruction)

Implicit vs explicit printing and the call stack
Hi everyone, I've run into a bit of strange problem with implicit vs explicit printing and the call stack. I've included an example at the bottom of this email. The basic problem is that I have an S3 object with a print method. When the object is implicitly printed (ie. typed directly into the console) the function arguments in the call stack are exploded out to their actual values,
