duplicate row importing issue
Hello,
I'm simply trying to import a .txt file that has a column of
about 30,000 pts. I found the file, but I'm getting an error:
> m <- read.table(choose.files())
Error in "row.names<-.data.frame"(`*tmp*`, value = row.names) :
duplicate row.names are not allowed
Any help with getting around this?
I really appreciate all the help.
Thanks

hclust error
Hello,
I'm trying to do a cluster analysis on a large data set. I
tried it out with a smaller one first, but I got this error:
> hc<-hclust(dist(x),"ave")
Error: cannot allocate vector of size 4129151 Kb
The data sample used (i.e. "x") is a numerical data set of size 32513 by 31
Does anyone know how I can do this analysis? Is R capable of this

Testing if all elements are equal in a vector/matrix
Is there a canonical way to check if all elements of a vector or matrix are
the same? Solutions below work, but look hackish to me.
> x <- rep(1, 10)
> all(x == x[1]) # == operator does not provide for small differences
[1] TRUE
> isTRUE(all.equal(x, rep(x[1], length(x)))) # ugly
[1] TRUE

PCA in R
Hello,
I'm attempting to run a PCA on an example data set. I ran it
just fine, but I don't know how to few the output? I listed what the
variable got stored in it, but I don't know how I can get anything else out
of it. Are there other ways to view the results?
Also, I'm confused about the last line "6 variables and 8 observations"
Aren't the rows the

Negative argument for head() and tail()
Dear R developers,
I'm a former APL programmer. In that language, the "take" (up arrow) and
"drop" (down arrow) operators were extensively used to, well, take and drop
elements of vectors. Functions head() and tail() are equivalents in R for the
"take" operator, but nothing seems to mimic the "drop" operator. I think it
would be useful.

Simple list manipulation question
I have a list of vectors
$A
"AB" "BC" "CD"
$B
"GF" "HG" "FH" "FJ"
and I want to convert it into a dataframe of form
A AB
A BC
A CD
B GF
B HG
B FH
B FJ
Just can't quite come up with a nice "R" solution for it.
Thanks,

./configure --prefix and R_LIBS
Hi!
I am installing R in non standard directory.
./configure --prefix=/non/standard/directory
The installation works fine.
But after starting R i get
.libPaths()
/usr/lib/R/library
but they cant be there of course!
Have I to set some additional switches during config?

customising installed libraries
hello
I am returning to some libraries that I had previously customised by amongst
other things adding additional functions. I had simply typed these new
functions into the file in library/R/thelibrary. These however do not seem
to be loaded now as they previously were under older versions of R.
What's changed and what do i need to do?
Thanks

and [ESS] Starting ESS
Dear R People:
I have finally seen the error of my ways and have decided to use ESS for R

However, I have a question right from the beginning. I'm somewhat confused
by the installation instructions.
Do I install XEMACS or ESS first, please?

S3 methods for cbind/rbind
I created a type of object similar to a data frame. In some circumstances, It
needs special methods for "[" and "[<-" and rbind() (but not cbind()). Then I
found this in the cbind()/rbind() man page:
The method dispatching is _not_ done via 'UseMethod()', but by
C-internal dispatching. Therefore, there is no need for, e.g.,
'rbind.default'.

Building the call of an arbitrary function
Hy all,
Is there a direct way to build the complete function call of an arbitrary
function?
Here's what I want to do. A function will build a function which will itself
call a probability density function for some law given in argument to the
first function:
> f("gamma", 1000)
will return, say,
function(x, shape, rate, scale = 1/rate)
dgamma(x + 1000, shape, rate,

Building own packages on Windows 2000!
Hi!
I encountered some things trying to build own packages under Windows
2000 for which i found no answer in the documentation.
First.
1. I do not found the rcmd.exe in the bin directory of R_HOME.
I installed R using the setup.exe
2. I updated the R intatllation with one of the zip files. (rw1041sp.zip)
now i had the rcmd.exe in the bin.
3. I do not found any hint in the docu that perl is

Testing if all elements are equal in a vector/matrix
Hi All,
There are several replies to the question below, but I think there must
exist a better way of doing so.
I just want to check whether all the elements of a vector are same. My
vector has one million elements and it is highly likely that there are
distinct elements in the first few itself. For example:
> x = c(1,2,rep(1,100000))
I want the answer as FALSE, which is clear from the
