ActiveRecord setting IDs on auto increment fields
Hi All, I''ve tried to do my searches, but can''t find reference to this anywhere - My question is about ActiveRecord inserts and IDs. I have a join table that both the models of the source tables join with "has_and_belongs_to_many". It seems like ActiveRecord is setting the "id" field for the join table- This should be an auto_increment and

Auto-increment lost during migration.
Hi. I get some strange results when using rename_column on a primary key in a migration. It seems like the migration script removes the auto-increment property if you rename a column. This is a minimal example. create_table :foo, :primary_key => :foo_id do |t| t.column "name", :string end # renaming the primary key makes auto-increment disappear. rename_column

auto increment id
looking at the unit tests of activerecord leads me to think the db is completely responsible for auto-incrementing the id field and rails does no magic here. can someone confirm that this is a true statement? that being the case - what is the preferred way to write database agnostic sql for one''s schema since each of the dbs has slightly different syntax for this functionality... does

ActiveRecord callbacks not happening
Hi, I have a model class like so: class Candidate < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name @@index = FerretConfig::INDEX def self.after_destroy puts "Ferret: after_destroy called" @@index.query_delete("+id:#{self.id} +ferret_class:#{self.class.name}") optimize_index end end But when I delete a record, the after_destroy is never called.

delete_all not resetting auto incement in database
Hey I''m writing a simple admin interface thats reading user data (skills) from a comma separated file. To clear the database before inserting new skills, I use Skill.delete_all Then I insert the new values I read from a file. Everything goes well up to the point where I see that auto-generated ID''s are not starting from 1. They start off at 840 (responding to the number of

MySQL-Front question
I''ve been going through the tutorial here: http://instantrails.rubyforge.org/tutorial/index.html About a third of the way down, right under figure 23 there''s a section on ''Adding Recipe Fields''. I just completed creating a recipes table and the Primary Index and auto_incrementing id have been made. The thing that''s baffling me, is that my results are

search_each returns partial results?
Hi, I''m having some trouble with ferret search_each. I''m posting rails'' script/console output, so I guess you can decrypt it: >> res = [] => [] >> index.search_each(''name: a*'') do |doc, score| ?> res << doc >> end => 50 >> res.size => 10 >> I''m guessing the ''=>50''

Custom id field auto_increment increment and offset?
Hi all, in mysql, you can set the following environment variables: set @@auto_increment_offset = 4; set @@auto_increment_increment =10; such that: create table people (id int auto_increment primary key, name char(100)); insert into people set name=''Giuseppe''; insert into people set name=''Laura''; select * from people; +----+----------+ | id | name |

Sequential ID Git hook
Now that we seem to be converging to an acceptable Git model, there was only one remaining doubt, and that's how the trigger to update a sequential ID will work. I've been in contact with GitHub folks, and this is in line with their suggestions... Given the nature of our project's repository structure, triggers in each repository can't just update their own sequential ID (like

Multiple indexes?
Hi, I''m indexing records from different database tables and they have identical column names in many cases. Does this mean I have to create different indexes for each table? TIA, Vamsee.

Creating a safe sequence generator
Hi all, I''ve got a rails and database question. Accounts have jobs, and job numbers should be assigned per account. Account 89 should have jobs 1-whatever, which are not the same as account 67, which has jobs 1-whatever. In the past, I have accomplished this quite easily with: create table job ( accountid int(10) unsigned not null default 0, jobid int(10) unsigned not null

migration oracle auto_increment
I have a schema for ~15 tables in MySQL. I need to migrate it to Oracle though I''ve never used Oracle before. I see that Oracle doesn''t have an auto_increment built in. One must create a trigger table for each auto_incrementing id. I''m contemplating translating my MySQL schema into a Ruby migration script. Do you know if Ruby migrations will generate enough SQL to

assert_template fails?
Hi All, I have a seemingly simple problem - but can''t figure out the problem. I have a simple functional test like so: def test_should_show_search_dropdown get :index assert_response :success assert_template :search end Inspite of having search.rhtml in /app/views/layout, it fails with an error: 1) Error: test_should_show_search_dropdown(SearchControllerTest):

Some newbie questions
Hi all, I''m newly discovering Ferret, and just did a crash course on Lucene to (I get the concepts behind it). But I''m have a few doubts: 1. What is the ''recommended'' way of integrating Ferret into my app now? The gem version or the plugin? 2. Where do I checkout the plugin from? Do I just copy the version on the wiki? Those apart, Ferret is really

how to disable auto-increment in primary key.
How can i disable the auto-increment for a primary key data type. The purpose of using primary_key data type is using different name for primary key. But we still want to use all the properties of "id" except for auto increment part. I had my migration as following #=============MIGRATION def self.up create_table :pk2s , :id=> false do |t| t.primary_key :uid

Auto-increment column scoped to another column
Hi, I have one field that needs to be incremented automatically, but be scoped to another column. So it should increment based on the last value of the previous row with the same value of the scoped column. I''m not trying to replace ID with another primary key or anything crazy like that, just trying to auto-increment a database column! Any idea of how to do this? Rails 3. Thanks! --
