S4 group "Math", "getGroupMembers", "genericForPrimitive"
Hi, I found the following on Windows 2000/NT R Version 1.9.1 (2004-06-21) (also Version 1.9.0): The S4 group "Math" doesn't work as documented; i.e., "log", "log10", "gamma" and "lgamma" are included in the documentation but don't work. See example code below. Moreover, what about 'genericForPrimitive' which is used in

questions about setMethod("Arith", ...)
Hi, we have some questions concerning the definition of new arithmetic methods. In our package "distr" (on CRAN) we define some new arithmetic methods for "+", "-", "*", "/". After loading "distr" the corresponding arithmetic methods work. Now, if we define a new class and also a new method for one of the arithmetic methods

trouble with S4 methods for group "Summary"
Hello. This question concerns the Methods package. I have created a new class and am trying to set a method for it for S4 group generic "Summary". I have run into some signature problems. An example: > setClass("track", representation(x="numeric", y="character")) [1] "track" > setGeneric("max", group="Summary")

setIs and method dispatch in S4 classes
Dear all, I have a question regarding setIs and method dispatch in S4 classes: Consider the following example: ##################################################### ## A02 "contains" A01 by setIs: setClass("A01", representation(a="numeric",b="numeric")) setClass("A02", representation(a="numeric",d="numeric"))

How to write an S4 method for sum or a Summary generic
If I have a class Foo, then i can write an S3 method for sum for it: >setClass("Foo",representation(a="integer"));aFoo=new("Foo",a=c(1:3,NA)) >sum.Foo <- function(x,na.rm){print(x);print(na.rm);sum(x at a,na.rm=na.rm)} >sum(aFoo) But how do I write an S4 method for this? All my attempts to do so have foundered. For example

S4 dispatch for .DollarNames (utils)
Hello, I'm trying to make .DollarNames generic and implement a method for it in a package. .DollarNames is the function that is now called to get completion possibilities. My R code looks like this: setGeneric( ".DollarNames" ) setClass("track", representation(x="numeric", y="numeric")) ## A class extending the previous, adding one more

Packages, generics, S3 and S4
My question has two parts. The first is with regard to the frame or environment in which generic functions are defined in packages. It seems as though they are defined (i.e. exist as objects) in frame 1, even when defined in a package. The following is a short example: setClass("track",representation(x="numeric",y="numeric")) plotTrack <- function(x,y,...)

s3 methods on S4 objects
I have J Chambers wonderful text ( Software for data Analysis) and I've been trying my hand at some very routine S4 OOP development. One of the things I was trying to do was to create some very basic S4 classes. The first was simply a class that had a data.frame as part of its representation. setClass("df",representation(dirframe="data.frame")) The object basically

S3, S4, namespace
I have encountered an issue which I have been unable to resolve, involving an S3 generic (print) being declared S4 generic in a package, and the method being exported. This all works fine - the problem occurs when I try to import the method to another package. Here is the bit that works fine. ------------- #the .r file for package bar

initalizing and checking validity of S4 classes
Dear useRs and wizaRds, I am currently developing a set of functions using S4 classes. On the way I encountered the problem exemplified with the code below. For some reason the 'validity' method does not seem to work, i.e. does not check for errors in the specification of the slots of the defined class. Any hints? My understanding of the whole S4 system was that validity checks are made

Seeking help to define s4 method for 'print'
I have got another question on defining a method for print() function for my s4 class. Here is my class definition as well as what I have done till now: > setClass("Me", representation(x1 = "numeric", x2 = "numeric", y1 = "character")) [1] "Me" > setMethod("print", "Me", definition=function(x) { + cat("Values

Was: setValidity and "initialize" method conflict ? [in R-help]
Hello, Thomas Stabla (statho3@web.de) has already sent this question to R-help, Wed, 12 Nov 2003 21:21:31 +0100, but we are not sure whether we should better post this mail to this audience than to R-help: --------------------------------------------------------------------- We are using S4-classes and want to force a validity check when an object is created. How can this be done, when an

S4 Classes and Initialize methods
Hello, I am trying to improve my skill on S4 classes. But there's something strange (to me) happening with "initialize" methods. This is probably a normal behaviour... but... something is unclear in my mind I declare two classes, namely "A", and "B", which has a slot of type A. The class "A" has an initialize method. What I do not understand is that

Extending a group of S4 classes by setClassUnion ?
Hi, I would like to create some S4 classes as follows setClass("Father",representation(name="character")) setClass("Son1",contains="Father",representation(par="numeric")) setClass("Son2",contains="Father",representation(par="logical")) Son1<-new("Son1") Son1 at name<-"Son1" Son1 at par<-3

S4 default for coercing
Something has changed in the S4 default for coercing. Am I now suppose to use setAs, or is there something else I should do to make this work: R version 2.7.0 (2008-04-22) .... > require("methods") > setClassUnion("OptionalPOSIXct", c("POSIXct", "NULL")) [1] "OptionalPOSIXct" > setClass("TSmetax",

S4 Method Dispatch for Sealed Classes
Hi, I encounter a problem with method dispatch with S4 classes, using the 'sealed' parameter in setClass. See that example below: setClass("X",representation(x="numeric"),sealed=TRUE) setGeneric("foo",function(x) standardGeneric("foo")) setMethod("foo",signature("X"),function(x) print("foo(X)")) x <-

setMethod confusion -best reference for S4 programming
Thanks I think you have both answered my question (reckon Ill go S3 on that). As an adjunct to this do you know what might be the best reference to the S4 methods current implementation. I have ordered the Chambers book "Programming with Data", and I have a short tutorial-- "S4 Classes in 15 pages, more or less". Have I missed any other useful resources? Stephen Henderson

Hashes as S4 Classes, or: How to separate environments
For learning purposes mainly I attempted to implement hashes/maps/dictionaries (Python lingua) as S4 classes, see the coding below. I came across some rough S4 edges, but in the end it worked (for one dictionary). When testing ones sees that the dictionaries D1 and D2 share their environments D1 at hash and D2 at hash, though I thought a new and empty environment would be generated each time

Creating a vector class
I'm trying to create a package for working on orientation data, i.e. data where the observations are 3D rotations. There are several different representations of orientations in common use: SO(3) matrices, Euler angles, unit quaternions, etc. One thing I'd like is to make it convenient to work in any representation, and have conversions to others done as needed. I'm trying to do
