nls() fails on a simple exponential fit, when lm() gets it right?
Dear R-help, Here's a simple example of nonlinear curve fitting where nls seems to get the answer wrong on a very simple exponential fit (my R version 2.7.2). Look at this code below for a very basic curve fit using nls to fit to (a) a logarithmic and (b) an exponential curve. I did the fits using self-start functions and I compared the results with a more simple fit using a straight lm()

How about a little game of... Re: lease?
Hello all, As the holiday season looms upon us, and NUT cracker sounds can be heard everywhere, I wonder if the current codebase is good enough to cut a 2.8.3 release some time soonish. Active development of recently contributed drivers has somewhat subsided; there are still some planned revisions (notably about documentation and statuses for ECO and similar modes), but some more get shelved

R-Terminal
Hi there! I use an gnome-terminal for using R. When I resize the termial to the maximum size, R uses only the left side of the window. Can I tell R to use the whole window somehow? Gnu Screen - terminal issues
I really like gnu screen and use it everyday but there's one thing that is a bit inconvenient, and that's the odd line wrapping and terminal size issues that seem to pop up. The problem crops up when I type or paste a really long command, and then go back and try to edit it; the text starts to wrap over itself and you have no idea what you are editing. Any fixes for this?

My server comes up in run-level 5 but I have to hit ctrl-alt-f7 to switch to the x-server screen. It doesn't switch to it

Hi, I have a package for which I'm writing a vignette. The vignette looks fine as indicated by R CMD check. However after installing the package (in my personal R library location) doing vignette('rcdk') says Warning message: vignette 'rcdk' *not* found But I can see the PDF file located under rcdk/doc in the R library directory. documenting overridden methods (for S4 classes)
Hi, I'm trying to convert a package of mine to S4 classes and am stumbling when trying to correctly document some overriden methods. I have written methods that allow one to use 'length', and various logical operators (|, &, etc) on my objects. For example the code for my length method is: setMethod('length', "fingerprint", function(x) { x
