Ajax - from there to here
Trying to use Amy Hoy''s ajaxariffic auto_complete methodology and I am
getting really close to the end.
This is fairly complicated but I will simplify as best I can.
My view code is simple...
<%= text_field_with_auto_complete ''client'', ''wholename'' %>
# wholename is not a column in ''clients'' but rather represents an

refactoring commonly used aggregations
I have a number of models that use an aggregation to combine First Name,
Middle Initial and Last Name and they have been working fine. I am
looking to clean this up, DRY it if possible.
I have things like this in application.rb
class Clwholename
attr_reader :first_name, :middle_initial, :last_name
def initialize(first_name, middle_initial, last_name)
@first_name = first_name

auto_complete on steroids
I am trying to get more out of auto_complete than it apparently was
designed to deliver.
My problems seem to be two fold.
1 - I use aggregations on
names... :first_name, :middle_initial, :last_name and then aggregate
them using a composed_of :wholename thing
auto_complete_for seems to be wired to only use table columns directly
and gags on the aggregate form.
2 - foreign table columns -

join fields for list views
I am sitting with the Agile book on my desk and scratching my head at
the discussion on aggregation - perhaps that isn''t what I need.
I have a db called clients.
fields include - first_name middle_initial last_name
I want to combine them all into one name element in a list view. I can
add/edit the fields separately but in the list view, I only want the one
combo field.
Is there a

All of the tutorials and the Agile book use MySQL and I''ve got that
working. I am now trying to use PostgreSQL and can''t seem to get going.
Is my problem the db setup in postgresql?

text_field_with_auto_complete (newbie question)
I have the text_field_with_auto_complete woking on my user DB using
last_name. so looking for ''ivanoff'' works great, but I can''t find
''john''. Plus I like to have ''last_name, first_name'' show up in the
dropdown.
what I can''t figure out is how to concat first_name and last_name to
make a name and use that to look it.

KISS and DRY? Not even close!
Hi all,
After working on my first rails app and having handed over some very
sophisticated coding from a lot of you guys. My app does what I want it to
do, but I''m no where near the end yet, and it seems that the KISS and DRY
objectives already went down the drain.
It could be lack of knowledge, only doing Ruby on (and) Rails for a month, but
I''m stuck on the following:

SQL Search Qustion
I am working on writing a search method where a user can type a string
of words and I return all the objects that have fields that match all of
the words in one or a combination of fields.

Validations continued
I simply can''t figure this out. I have been reading and re-reading Agile
book and wiki.rubyonrails.org - all sorts of validation methods and
still, it doesn''t work.
Controller code
def create
@client = Client.new(params[:client])
if @client.save!
flash[:notice] = ''Client was successfully created.''

Best way to split forms into steps?
I have a form with about 30+ fields, which the client is wanting to
separate into 3 pages/steps - just wondering what is the best way to go
about this, specifically remembering data entered, from one page to
another, and making sure the various bits of data are validated
correclty, error messages outputted etc etc...
is there a best practice method for doing this?

can''t get date_select to work
Hi,
I render a couple of date_select fields, the HTML looks fine, I can
see the values submitted back to the server, but AR doesn''t pick them
up from the hash in Booking.new(params[''booking'']).
I''ve got a ''booking'' object with parameters product, startdate and
enddate.

validation of aggregates
This may not be possible...
I have an aggregation of clwholename defined in my model.
the aggregation builds clwholename from :first_name, middle_initial,
last_name
and it generally works fine.
I am trying to add a validation so while there may be many ''John''
first_names, and ''Doe'' last_names, I only want one ''John Doe''
so I tried...

How to have multiple fields appear in collection_select?
I have a table of employees with the fields "last_name" and
"first_name". I would like to populate a collection select so that what
the user sees in the drop-down is "Last Name, First Name". So far, the
only way I have figured out to do this is by using "find_by_sql" in my
model, like so:
@employees.find_by_sql("SELECT id, concat(last_name,

Limiting the columns loaded from a legacy db
I''m setting up a new Rails project that is a nice front end for a
company''s personnel database with a legacy schema.
Unfortunately, the table that contains all the standard information
(first name, last name, email address) has some 20+ columns, one of
which is a BLOB of a picture of the person.
Loading all this takes a while, when the application really only

Scaffold shows all attributes altough I use attr_accessible!
Hi all
I have a Model like this:
class Member < ActiveRecord::Base
attr_accessible :username, :email, :first_name, :last_name
end
I have created a scaffold using script/generate scaffold member members
Using the URL localhost:3000/members/edit/1 I can edit all attributes,
including created_at, lock_version etc.! But it should only show the
attributes I listed in attr_accessible!

Autocomplete and Firefox
Having problems with the autocomplete on my linux box and firefox.
When I use form tags it breaks, without form tags everything works fine.
Exact copy of the example provided, but I added form tags.. The initial
search and select works but then the box sort of "locks up" and I can''t
change it at all, If I do try to type something nothing changes but a

Login form question
I''m using Rails Recipes to create a login form but instead of username
and password, my setup is firstname, lastname, password.
I seemed to be gramatically challenged and not sure how to set up the
parameter list. Can anyone offer up a suggestion.
The book shows the method starting like:

aaf and dynamic attrs: a bug?
Hi!
I faced some issue while using it for dynamic attrs indexing/search.
Maybe I made something wrong. Here is test method. Everything works just
fine until last line http://pastie.caboo.se/66274 . Tested on both
stable and trunk of aaf and ferret 0.11.4.
the short version of code below:
