Can't seem to finish a randomForest.... Just goes and goe s!
When you have fairly large data, _do not use the formula interface_, as a couple of copies of the data would be made. Try simply: Myforest.rf <- randomForest(Mydata[, -46], Mydata[,46], ntrees=100, mtry=7) [Note that you don't need to set proximity (not proximities) or importance to FALSE, as that's the default already.] You might also want to use

Can't seem to finish a randomForest.... Just goes and goes!
Alternatively, if you can arrive at a sensible ordering of the levels you can declare them ordered factors and make the computation feasible once again. sprintf error: "only 100 arguments allowed"
I'm trying to apply a function defined in the VW R docs, that attemps to convert a data.table object to Vowpal Wabbit format. In the process i'm getting the error in printf mentioned in the subject. The original function is here: https://github.com/JohnLangford/vowpal_wabbit/blob/master/R/dt2vw.R Below there is a small example that reproduces the error. The function works great with

writing a data frame in excel format
Hello I know how read a file in excel format into a R data frame using the RODBC library, but I don't know how write a R data frame in excel format. I don't understand the instructions from RODBC user manual. To read an excel file I use. library(RODBC); conex<-odbcConnectExcel("fis_quim.xls"); sqlTables(conex); data<-sqlFetch(conex,"hoja1"); Suppose I

sprintf error: "only 100 arguments allowed"
Wouldn't it make sense to have this in the man page? The 8192-byte limitation for 'fmt' is mentioned but not this one. Thanks, H. preceding X. and X
Hello, Why do I get preceding "X." (that is a and X followed by a period) for negative numbers and an "X" for positive numbers when I read a csv file? Am I stuck with this? If so, how do I convert it to normal numbers? dat=read.csv(file_path) > dat [1] X0.0 X.0.240432350374 X0.355468069625 X.0.211469972378 X1.1812797415 X.0.227975150826

Read.fwf
Dear List I have a fixed width file with variables of varying width. The help is pretty transparent for this feature, but I can't seem to figure out how I can make effective use of the package with my data. In my dataset, the first 80 columns are of width 1 followed by other variables with width larger than 1. I think the correct way to do this, by brute force, would be >

Step command failing for lm function
Hi, I have a fairly simple linear regression using the lm function. There are about 100 variables and 30,000 rows of data. It runs fine and produces a decent looking R2 value. I'm interested in performing a stepwise variable selection to see if things can be cleaned up a bit. Calling the step function returns ONE iteration (all the variables) and then stops. No errors are reported.

Performance leak with concurrent requests on static files (Rails)
Hi, I just found something weird for mongrel with static files. Performance endlessly decreases if mongrel serve static files from simultaneous requests : Here is the test setup: Ruby on Rails Mongrel (tested with 1.3.12.4 and 1.3.13-pre installed today) Ubuntu dapper, compiled ruby 1.8.4. http client : while true; do ab -n 1000 -c 30 http://localhost:3000/ 2>/dev/null | grep

Strange issues with Excel & Samba
I have a client who used to have an NT server, we replaced it with Gentoo Linux and Samba v3.0.9 and they are now having what appears to be some sort of file-sharing issue with Excel. When a user opens an Excel file on the file server it opens properly, no errors or warnings of any kind. But when they try to save the file, Excel warns them that "the file may have changed by someone

[hivex][PATCH v2] OS X, bootstrap: Locate pkg.m4
OS X does not include pkg-config by default. This causes ./configure to fail when invoking PKG_CHECK_MODULES for libxml2. This change autodetects the path for aclocal, c/o RWMJ noting the real problem is a deficiency in aclocal on OS X.
