udev fails in guest, which seem to lead to getty hanging.
Hi, I got a centos guest started on fc6 finally by creating the mkinitrd by hand. But the thing is centos seem to hang after the services are started properly and just before the login prompt. I also notice that ''udev'' is failing at the beginning, which could be why mingetty hangs. I am guessing that udev is the service that creates the necessary ttys. So is there something I

Problems with getty and X on runlevel switch [Was: Re: The future of centos]
The easy way to restart gdm is when you are on the login screen itself or the desktop simply press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. This works for Upstart in CentOS 6.x but will not work for CentOS 7.x which uses Systemd. The service command does not work for gdm. However, logging out of the desktop will restart gdm. It works for the graphical login exactly like the gettys in a TTY environment. On

hypatia problems?
Dear all Off topic to some extent but Ted Harding has just called me to say he is (a) seeing large delays in the list messages when it is sent internally from hypatia.math.ethz.ch. I get only a delay of an hour which is reasonable in the scrap below but Ted reports delays of the order 24 hours, (b) messages he has sent to the list don't appear on it for a long time. Is anyone else

Login Console on ttyUSB0
Kernel parameters aside (console=ttyUSB0 console=tty0), I am trying to get a login console working on a USB-to-serial adapter. systemctl enable serial-getty at ttyUSB0.service systemctl start serial-getty at ttyUSB0.service This works without issue on Debian 8. However when running the same on CentOS 7, my logs are filled with: May 16 12:44:58 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Starting Serial

smbd running multiple times
Dear "someone who can help", I am having a problem with SAMBA and SWAT (although I'm not sure SWAT is part of the problem...) I get two instances of "smbd" when ever it is started on this system. From SWAT I can only stop it ONE time. After that, each time I attempt to stop the SMBD daemon from SWAT it simply starts TWO more instances of the daemon (or something

Tinc not starting but not complaining either
Hi everybody, I've spent last 16 hours trying to get Tinc working on my two almost identical linux boxes. Both are running Debian stable with backported Openssl and self-compiled kernel 2.4.24 with ebtables-patch to enable bridging firewall. Both firewalls have both masquaraded and just bridged nets behind (LAN & DMZ) and they are working perfectly. Now I need to get from my home to
