How to plot
Hello,
I would like to know if R provides the similar function to produce
the 4-in-1 graph ("Normal Plot of Residuals", "I Chart of Residuals",
"Histogram of Residuals" & "Residuals vs Fits") as MiniTab. If do not
have, could anyone please tell me how to produce above-mentioned
individual chart?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

frequence of patterns in a vector
Dear R users,
Suppose I have a vector that consists of characters like ABC, A02, RCA,
etc., and there are about 700 of possible characters. For example,
x <- c("ABC", "ABC", "ABC", "A02", "ABC", "RCA", "ABC", "ABC")
I'd like to get a frequency matrix that looks something like this:
ABC 6
A02 1
RCA 1

scan() vs readChar() speed
Dear list,
I am trying to find a fast solution to read moderately large (1 -- 10
million entries) text files containing only tab-delimited numeric
values. My test file is the following,
nr <- 1000
nc <- 5000
m <- matrix(round(rnorm(nr*nc),3),nr=nr)
write.table(m, file = "a.txt", append=FALSE,
row.names = FALSE, col.names = FALSE)
scan() is faster than

R 2.15.1 is released
The build system has rolled up R-2.15.1.tar.gz (codename "Roasted Marshmallows") at 9:00 this morning. This is a maintenance release; see the list below for details.
You can get it from
http://cran.r-project.org/src/base/R-2/R-2.15.1.tar.gz
or wait for it to be mirrored at a CRAN site nearer to you.
Binaries for various platforms will appear in due course.

Rose diagrams in R?
I am looking for a function (or package) to plot histograms of directional
data such as wind direction. I believe these are called rose diagrams. Is
there an R script for this? If not, can it be constructed in a function
calling primitive graphic calls (lines, circles, boxes or polygons)?
The stars function is not quite right.

Bloomberg data import
Dear R Folks,
I know that Enrique Bengoechea ( Credit Suisse ) had posted some code
snippets for importing Bloomberg historical data into R.
I found them to be very useful.
Has anyone succeeded in getting the below items
from Bloomberg to R?
(a) historical economic release data,
(b) tick/intra-day data
(c) bulk data such as Index membership info, etc.
If someone is willing to share their code

remote database queries
With good and faithful python remote database queries look something
like this:
url.urlopen("username/pssword at host",query)
where query is something like "select * from table where ...."
Does R support queries on remote hosts with username and password?
What does a simple example look like?
Thank you.

NOTE: unstated dependencies in examples
Using R 2.13.1, I am now getting the following NOTE when I run R CMD
check on my HistData
package
* checking for unstated dependencies in examples ... NOTE

gplots sp
Under R 2.12.x, I didn't get these notes.
I have ~ 25 .Rd files in this package, and AFAICS, every example uses
library or require for the
functions used;
