Recommended way to change defaultPackages under Windows
What is the recommended way to change the default set of packages that are loaded at startup by R for Windows? I am writing vignettes for the Devore6 package which my introductory engineering statistics students will use and I would like to describe how the R environment can be changed so that this package is loaded by default. I understand from the R for Windows FAQ that one way would be to

R 1.7.0: Startup error: Error in "class<-"(*tmp*, value = Class) : couldn't find function "objWithClass"
Dear R-List member, I have installed the new version of R on my PC (see system details below). I can start the RGui with http_proxy succesfully. However, I do encounter two problems: 1) After starting the Rgui the following error message is displayed (vertical dots represent omissions of output): R : Copyright 2003, The R Development Core Team Version 1.7.0 (2003-04-16) . . . . plot, plot, methods, crash (PR#5173)
(If this only happens in Win 98, I'm sure I could live with it. Just may be helpful to report it, I hope.) Start up R GUI, then > plot(1:4,1:4) # then close manually by clicking X > plot(1:4,1:4) # ditto > methods(plot) sometimes produces normal output and even the following prompt, but then crashes immediately, or more often, crashes immediately with no output. I can do any

Unintended loading of package:datasets
The dataset package is being loaded apparently by one of the packages that I am using. The loading of the datasets takes a long time and I would like to eliminate it. I thought the datasets were effectively examples so don't understand why they would be required at all. 1) How can I determine what is causing the datasets to be loaded? 2) How can I stop them from doing so? I am using the

suppress startup messages from default packages
Hi all, several packages print messages during loading. How do I avoid to see them when the packages are in the defaultPackages? Here is an example. With this in ~/.Rprofile ,----[ ~/.Rprofile ] | old <- getOption("defaultPackages") | options(defaultPackages = c(old, "filehash")) | rm(old) `---- I get as last line when starting R: ,---- | filehash: Simple key-value

defaults in R: packages, .Rhistory
With the current version (rw1070), every time I start R it loads a whole bunch of packages, many of which I do not need in a typical session: > search() [1] ".GlobalEnv" "package:methods" "package:ctest" "package:mva" [5] "package:modreg" "package:nls" "package:ts" "Autoloads" [9]

AW: anova-bug in R-version 1.0.0? (PR#470)
I think I've discovered what went wrong. My workspace included a function wilcox.test formerly copied from ctest. Now ctest ist part of the distribution and because of that I always got the message: [Previously saved workspace restored] Error in autoload("wilcox.test", "ctest") : Object already exists I didn't take care of this message. Now I removed

.Rprofile, date tagging history, loading packages
Dear R-Helpers, I'm fiddling with my .Rprofile in Windows XP & R 2.7.0 Beta. I prefer to manually save my workspace but automatically save my command history via the .Rprofile. That is working fine once I found that "utils::" was required before the loadhistory & savehistory functions. What I would like to do is add a separator line with a date between the histories of each

excel files and R
Greetings everyone, I am new at R. My questions is rather basic. Looking R manuals looks like there should be a way to read MS excel files into R. Could somebody tell me which library should I use for that? Thanks in advance Victor H. how to undo automatic loading of packages?
I wanted to try out package distrMod, so I did > install.packages('distrMod') > library(distrMod) and played around, saved and quit. Now whenever I start up in this directory, I get distr and lots of other stuff loaded and lots of messages. How do I keep it from automatically loading, other than starting over in another directory? I read ?Startup, but I couldn't suss out

Detaching "ctest"
Hi Everyone, We have just upgraded to R-1.2.1, and I note, in contrast to R-1.1.1, that ctest is now loaded automatically. The mechanism for this is to create a .First function in base: .First <- function() { require("ctest", quietly=TRUE) } Now I don't want ctest, but I find that simply putting if (length(grep("ctest", search()))) detach(package:ctest) into

Error: package or namespace load failed for ‘utils
Hi, When starting an embedded R I encounter the following issue under certain conditions: ``` Error: package or namespace load failed for ?utils? in if (.identC(class1, class2) || .identC(class2, "ANY")) TRUE else {: missing value where TRUE/FALSE needed ``` (more such errors for grDevices, graphics, and stats) And in the end: ``` Warning messages: 1: package ?utils? in

auto-loading package possible?
Dear R-help, Yes, I do know about the auto-loading feature. My question is more complicated than that: Suppose I loaded a package (e.g., e1071) and created an object of certain class (e.g., svm), for which there is a print method in the package to hide things that the user may not need to see (e.g., large vectors or matrices needed by methods such as predict). If the next time I started R, I

capturing output from Win 98 shell
How can I best achieve the following (works in Splus): filenames <- dos("dir *.sasb7dat /b") What I am asking, more generically, is: how can I capture the output of a DOS command in R? I have tried using system("COMMAND.COM /c dir /b", intern=T, show.output.on.console=T) where intern: a logical, indicates whether to make the output of the command an R

Problem with data.frames
Hi, I just encountered a problem in R that may easily be fixed: If one uses attach for a data.frame e.g. 10000 times and forgets detach, then R gets incredibly slow (less then 10% of the original speed). R demos
Hi All, I am currently preparing some form of slideshow introducing R and its capabilities for some colleagues. The thing will be about 30 mins, and I'd like to have some "pretty pictures" and some "amazing facts" (I'm trying to sell, obviously :)). Can I ask if it's possible to easily retrieve a gross figure of the number of functions in R considering the
