tick marks on both sides of axis
hello,
all my attempts to get a plot with tick marks on both sides of axis failed -
can someone please help me with this?
thanks,

Plot ticks and tick labels: thickness, colour?
I am displaying several series in one plot, and would like to make
them distinct without having to employ a legend.
I managed to color tickmarks, but have been unsuccessful with either one of
a) making tickmarks thicker (without increasing the axis at the same time).
From reading ?axis:
lty, lwd: line type, width for the axis line and the tick marks.
in would appear that I cannot

how do R calculates the number of intervals between tick-marks
Hello,
I want to know how do R calculates the number of intervals between
tick-marks in the y axis in a plot.
I'm making a three y-axes plot and this information would help me a lot.
Thanks in advance.

forcing all tick labels to plot
I'm trying to find a way to force all the x-axis tick labels to plot,
regardless whether or not they overlap or look pretty.
V is a factor with, say, 4 levels. A call to plot(V) gives a
histogram-like plot, one bar for each level in V. The problem is that
all the label names may not be plotted because some of the names are
lengthy and would tend to overlap if plotted.
I don't care

Organising tick-marks in plot()
Hi Folks,
I'm advising someone who's a beginner with R,
and therefore wants the simplest answer possible.
The issue is to produce a plot using
plot(x,y,...)
where, on the X-axis, the tick-marks should be
on the lines of:
-- Range of X-axis: 0:1000
-- tick-marks labelled "0","200",...,"800","1000"
-- unlabelled tick-marks every 50 from 0 to

tick marks on mfrow=c(3,3) plot
I am generating an array of similar plots using the par(mfrow=c(3,3))
method. Everything works fine except the plot only puts y-axis tick marks
on cells in column one and x-axis tick marks on cells in row three. I
would like tick marks on both the x and y axix of all 9 plots in my array.
I am generating plots using the following two functions
three.by.three.plot <- function(ss)

How to define specific location of tick marks in plot()
Hi,
I wish to create a series of plots with the same x-axis range and the same
placement of tick marks. In addition I want to force the tick marks to be at
specific locations. For example, if I wish to have an x-axis which goes from
40 to 110, with tick marks at 40, 50, 60, ... , How can I accomplish that?
The various parameters I have tried changing just seem to be suggestions for

lattice splom: how to adjust space between tick marks and tick labels?
Dear expeRts,
how can I decrease the space between the tick marks and the corresponding labels in an splom?
See here:
library(lattice)
U <- matrix(runif(4000), ncol = 8)
splom(U, axis.text.cex = 0.2) # => space between the [small] tick labels and tick marks is/seems to be too large
I checked ?panel.pairs but could not find an option for that.
Cheers,

how to control ticks in plots with yasp or xasp
Hi,
A few times I tried to control the number and position of tick marks
in plots with the yasp or xasp parameters. For example, a y axis was
drawn by default with tick marks at 0, 20, 40, 80 and 100. I tried to
get tick marks every 10 by adding
yasp=(0, 100, 10)
but this had no effect at all. I know I can draw the axis and tick
marks manually, but often this simple option would suffice

in axis() suppressing axis line but keeping tick marks
I've been trying to figure out a parameter that will let you separately
adjust the parameters for the axis line from the tick mark.
In the following example, I would like to suppress the axis line, but keep
the tick marks.
Thanks,
Andrew
foo <- data.frame(x=1:3, y=4:6)
plot(foo$x, foo$y, type="n", axes=F)
points(foo$x, foo$y)

help on plot tick marks
Hi there,
I have a yearly data from 1990-2030. The tick marks only show every five years. I want to add another tick mark at 2008 since data beyond that are predicted. How can I just add one tick mark to the X axis? Thank you.
Best,
Jacky

alternate tick labels and tick marks with lattice xyplot
Hi,
I would like to use xyplot to create a figure. Unfortunately, I cannot find
documentation in xyplot to specify alternating the x-axis tick labels with
the x-axis tick marks. I can do this with the regular R plot function as
follows.
#A small version of my data looks like this
data<-data.frame(matrix(ncol=3,nrow=12))
data[,1]<-rep(c(1,2,3),c(4,4,4))
data[,2]<-rep(c(1,2,3,4),3)

axTicks on a reverse ylog plot (PR#7973)
There is still issues with the reversed y-log scale plot:
# Test case A: works as expected
plot(10:100,log="y",ylim=c(100,11))
grid()
par("yaxp")
# Test case B: grid does not have horizontal lines; par("yaxp") is
different
plot(1:100,log="y",ylim=c(100,10))
grid()
par("yaxp")
In the second test case, axTicks for the horizontal lines (in

How to show the intermediate tick marks without the values in a different color
Is there a way to show also the intermediate tick marks without the
values?
Example:

What would one do to show the tick marks in, say, gray color at the
increment of 1 without showing the actual values in-between the default

Labels on axes with log scales with lattice
I using lattice to make some plots and I want to make the y-axis on
some of these plots use a log scale. In the following plot:
x <- 1:10
y <- 2^x
xyplot(log10(y) ~ x)
I get tick marks on the y-axis at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0. I
would rather have just 3 tick marks at 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 but labeled
10, 100, and 1000.
I know this can be done using the "at" and

Normalizing plot tick values
Hi,
I have a plot whole tick values along the axis have a certain range 0 - x .
I need to normalize this range without changing my data files. for e.g.,
if my plot has tick values at 10,20,30,40,50... i have to make this 2,4,6,
etc. but without changing the plot data... I am hoping I can add something
to the plot command that goes like tick values divided by a quantity.
Any help is appreciated.

tick mark intervals
Hi everyone!
This must be a common question but I have not found an answer to it in the
archives yet.
I am producing four plots with par(mfrow=c(2,2)). The x-axis is the same for
all of them but the y-axis is different.
What I would like to do is to have a different range of the y-axis and
different intervals between tick marks. BUT
I would like to have the same number of tick marks and I would

Changing Tick Marks for Date Plots
I have been experimenting with various approaches to
plotting (irregular) time-series with reasonable
success. One thing I have been able to do is change
the number of tick marks on the axis. Consider the
following simple example:
> x <- as.data.frame(matrix(ncol=2,nrow=500))
> names(x) <- c("dates","values")
> x$dates <- as.POSIXct(Sys.time()+1:500*86400)

Tick marks in cloud (lattice)
Hi! Probably a simple question, but I can't get any tick marks in the 3d
scatterplot I created using the cloud function.
The following works to display the three groups using different symbols:
data(iris)
cloud(Sepal.Length ~ Petal.Length * Petal.Width, data = iris, cex = 1.2,
groups = Species, pch = c(16,1,1), col = c("black","black","red"),

minor tick marks for plots (PR#13616)
Hello,
I think I found a bug:
> windows(1,width = 10, height = 10, pointsize = 5,xpos = 0, ypos = 0 )
> hdata[1:3,1] <- c(1,10,15)
> hdata[1:3,2] <- c(2,1,4)
> plot(hdata[,1],hdata[,2],xaxt="n")
> axis(1,at=c(2,10,14))
> minor.tick(nx=2, ny=1,tick.ratio=1)
the minor tick marks appear between the tick marks which would have been
drawn without the option
