ipfw "bug" - recv any = not recv any
I hesitate to call this a "bug" as I don't know all the history behind
the ipfw2 decisions, so let me toss this out there and see I'm just
missing something.
Overview
========
The negated operator, "not recv any" was taken to mean "any packet never
received by an interface" believed to be equivalent to "any packet that
originated on the current

why iriver's ifp series with limitation on ogg/vorbis support
Hi all, I buy a iriver's ifp-880 portable player, it only can
play ogg file with bitrate 96kbps-325kbps. I know that
the higher bitrate of file, the more cpu cycles to comsume in most case.
For beyond 325kbps,I guess the chip (pnx0101) can't realtimely decode.
But for ogg file below 96kbps, the cpu performance maybe isn't the bottleneck,
and I suspect because of the limitation of

subloop - flexible coding - variable number of loops
Hello,
I want to create a flexible code for the following example: In stead of
using a different code for each n (as in my example below), I want to
write a general code for every n (n from 1 to 10).
I tried a lot of things, but I always got stuck with the number of
subloops or witch closing the brackets. Any suggestions?

CMENU file handling problems.
I'm writing something that's based on Murali Krishnan Ganapathy's CMENU
system,
except mine's driven by a menu.txt file that I supply (mostly so I can
edit the
menu.txt wherever I happen to be and so I won't need a syslinux build
environment
everytime the menu structure changes).
I'm able to build up menus that do what I expect, so that's good.
However, I want to be

offset
I would like to do a logistic multiple regression on a binary variate,
with what Genstat calls an offset, ie a regression variable with the
coefficient constrained=1. I'm far from home and have Splus but not R
here, but any information from either source would be very welcome. I'd
hate to have to go back to using Genstat . . .
Thanks,
Ted.

iRiver iFP-790 and its Ogg Vorbis support
Does anyone have the iRiver iFP-790 player (or maybe any other one of their iFP-7xx series)?
I bought this player very recently, and I have been having problems with Ogg Vorbis playback. It skips so much that you only hear music 20% of the time.
Is my unit defective or does the player really have problems with ogg vorbis? I think mine even chokes on wma's encoded at standard settings.

Randomly extract rows from a data frame
Hi,
I am looking for a way to randomly extract a specified number of rows from a
data frame. I was planning on binding a column of random numbers to the
data frame and then sorting the data frame using this bound column. But I
can't figure out how to use this column to sort the entire data frame so
that the content of the rows remains together. Does anyone know how I can
do this? Hints

Kendall package tau-a, b, and c
Hi all,
I would like to ask a question related to Kendall package. I ran Kendall
(x,y) and
saw the results. But I am not sure which tau values R reported. I have
ties in
my data set, so I want tau-b. Can anybody tell how Kendall package is
calculating tau values? I have looked at the package PDF, but I could
not find
any useful information. As long as I see from the following

textbook on experimental design?
I'll be teaching a graduate course on (the analysis of) experimental
designs next year, using R. Does anyone know of a suitable textbook?
(Venables and Ripley MASS Ch6 on Linear Models covers roughly the right
material, but at a level that is way too difficult for my students.)
Sorry if this has been asked before. I've looked through the archives and
found Julian Faraway's book, but

xfig boxplot (polygon) bug??
There appears to be a bug in the R xfig() driver.
When I run a simple example, eg
> data(InsectSprays)
> boxplot(count ~ spray, data = InsectSprays, col = "lightgray")
the boxplot is fine. Doing the same thing after
> xfig(file='test.fig')
and then opening in Xfig (ver3.2 patchlevel 2) on my Linux box produces boxplots
where the boxes, although correctly shaded in,

IPv6, ULAs and FreeBSD
Hello,
I already consulted related lists @freebsd.org [1,2] but I have remained
unsuccessful to solve the following issue: VPN works for an internal
IPv4 subnet, but I doesn't for an internal IPv6 subnet with ULAs. To be
honest, I don't have any experience setting up a local IPv6; so I guess
that I'm doing something wrong here.
For those that know FreeBSD: The main aim is to connect
