Finding center of mass in a hydrologic time series
The small bit of script below is an example of what I'm attempting to do - find the day on which the 'center of mass' occurs. In case that is the wrong term, I'd like to know the day that essentially cuts the area under the curve in to two equal parts: set.seed(4004) Date <- seq(as.Date('2000-09-01'), as.Date('2000-09-30'), by='day') hyd <-

Finding center of mass in a hydrologic time series
Eric B's response provided just the kind of quick & simple solution I was hoping for (appears as the function com below). However, I once again failed to take advantage of the power of R and have reverted back to using a for loop for the next step of the processing. The example below (which requires the library EGRET for pulling an example dataset) works, but probably can be replaced

EMACS/ESS problems
Hello all, since we're on the topic of R-editors. I am using emacs/ess on a unix workstation (to interact with R and have been having a little problem. I usually write the R commands I need to run in a separate buffer then copy and paste them into the *R* buffer for evaluation. The problem is, if any command is spread over multiple lines emacs/R hangs when I paste it in the R buffer for

Perf enhancements in Samba4.1 related to SMB2.1 / SMB3.0 protocol
Hi Everyone, My doubts are for Samba4.1 performance related enhancements (SMB2.1 / SMB3.0). My experimental samba server hardware is running 4.1 version. Want to improve robocopy WRITE throughput from a two samba client machines (win7 or win8 or server2012 x86 servers). Someone please advice me how can I use SMB2.1 or SMB3.0 capabilities to improve WRITE throughput. I tried samba4.1

would you give me your hand to standardize columns in a matrix?
Hi R User, Would you give me your hand to standardize some columns in a matrix? I have included the example table. > dput(test) structure(list(X = c(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), Y = c(4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), temp = c(0.818, 0.113, 0.256, 0.587, 0.955, 0.207), oxy = c(0.797, 0.487, 0.727, 0.128, 0.514, 0.031)), .Names = c("X", "Y", "temp", "oxy"), row.names =

silhoutte.default bugs
Hello all, This might have been fixed in later versions (I am using R1.7.0), r-help archive contains messages reporting similar problems but no reports of codes fixes. I have encountered a couple of problems using the silhouette function. one occurs when the clustering contains clusters composed of 1 element (Martin Maechler posted code few months ago that fixes a similar problem that occurs

Formal definitions of R-language.
Hello! Some CS-guys (the type who knows what Church formalism is) keep asking me questions about formal definitions of R-language that I can not answer (or even understand). Is there some freely available papers which I can throw at them where it would be explained is R functional/OOP/procedural language, does it use weak/strong, dynamic/static typization, does it use lazy or ...(do not know

Problem well trying to run Need For Speed Porsche Unleased
So I have Need For Speed Porsche Unleased and I have ubuntu 6.06 LTS and I have wine 0.9.90-ubuntu2 which I installed using the package manager . So I simply use wine and I get to play NFS on ubuntu simple right. I install NFS and everything goes fine. I then go to wincfg and add NFS and change it to run in 98. Error one I run the shortcut on my desktop in a terminal and I get this

AIC questions
In accordance with Venables and Ripley, SAS documentation and other sources AIC with sigma^2 unknown is calculated as: AIC = -2LL + 2* #parameters = n log(RSS/n) + 2p For the fitness data: (http://support.sas.com/ctx/samples/index.jsp?sid=927), SAS gets an AIC of 64.534 with model oxygen = runtime. (SAS STAT User's Guide. Chapter 61. pp 3956, the REG Procedure). This value of AIC accords

Interpolating variables into quoted strings
Hello I am new to R and am coming from a Perl background. I have had trouble figuring out from the documentation how to interpolate a variable into a quoted string (if it's possible). This seems to be necessary when writing a script that must print out strings (for example plot legends) whose content is calculated during the execution of the script. In perl I could write: $name =

distance in kmeans algorithm?
Hello. Is it possible to choose the distance in the kmeans algorithm? I have m vectors of n components and I want to cluster them using kmeans algorithm but I want to use the Mahalanobis distance or another distance. How can I do it in R? If I use kmeans, I have no option to choose the distance. Thanks in advance, Arnau.

AW: Probleme with Kmeans...
Sorry, to solve your question I had tried: data(faithful) kmeans(faithful[c(1:20),1],10) Error: empty cluster: try a better set of initial centers But when I run this a second time it will be ok. It seems, that kmeans has problems to initialize good starting points, because of the random choose of these starting initial points. With kmeans(data,k,centers=c(...) the problem can be solved.

kmeans: how to retrieve clusters
Hello, I'd like to classify data with kmeans algorithm. In my case, I should get 2 clusters in output. Here is my data colCandInd colCandMed 1 82 2950.5 2 83 1831.5 3 1192 2899.0 4 1193 2103.5 The first cluster is the two first lines the 2nd cluster is the two last lines Here is the code: x = colCandList$colCandInd y = colCandList$colCandMed m = matrix(c(x, y),

Kmeans again
Dear helpers I'm sorry to insist but I still think there is something wrong with the function kmeans. For instance, let's try the same small example: > dados<-matrix(c(-1,0,2,2.5,7,9,0,3,0,6,1,4),6,2) I will choose observations 3 and 4 for initial centers and just one iteration. The results are > A<-kmeans(dados,dados[c(3,4),],1) > A $cluster [1] 1 1 1 1 2 2 $centers

KMEANS output...
Using R 2.1.0 on Windows 2 questions: 1. Is there a way to parse the output from kmeans within R? 2. If the answer to 1. is convoluted or impossible, how do you save the output from kmeans in a plain text file for further processing outside R? Example: > ktx<-kmeans(x,12, nstart = 200) I would like to parse ktx within R to extract cluster sizes, sum-of-squares values, etc., OR save ktx in
