ROracle connection problem
Hi,
I found the same question in the mailing list already a few months ago -
but there was no answer to it - so I'll try it again
Could somebody help me to solve this following problem? I just begin to
learn how to connect my Oracle database with R.

Importing many files
Hello Cracks,
we want to import 10 x 365 files containing each 7 variables with 1211
rows. The filenames end with numbers from 1 to 365. We tried a for loop
to import using read.table but we couldn't create the r objects within
the loop. We want each file in an own r-objekt (matrix).
Does anyone know what can be done?
Thanks, Felix

geoR, variofit
Hello All!
I calculate a variogram using the function variog (package geoR)
afterwards I use variofit to fit a spherical model (see code below).
Now I just changed the units of the variable (in this case MPa to kPa
just a factor of 1000). If I do so, I get a different fit and
therefore different ranges etc. Why? The semi-variance is of course 6
orders of magnitude higher but the values

calculating variograms (gstat) with large data sets
Dear all,
I am aiming to calculate variograms using variogram() from gstat.
The problem is that some of my data-sets are very large (> 400000 points).
Running the command takes some hours of time and does not give any
error-message.
Nevertheless the result seem not to be appropriate - the first few bins
are ok (up to a distance of about 300) but then it gains lags which are
much larger than

Placing legends
I'm trying to automate making a bunch of figures and I need a way to
automate legend position. As I understand it the legend is placed based
on coordinates. I don't know before hand what the coordinates are going
to be. On one graph my y axis might go from -50 to -10. On another it
might go from 0 to 180.
Is there any way to query where the origin is? Or is there another way

Patents on algorithms harm data analytic services
Cologne, 10.12.00
Dear Sir,
Dear Madam,
We are concerned about the possibility that the European Commission might introduce software patenting into the European Community because we think this will harm our profession.
We make our living on data management and statistical analyses. Modern statistics crucially depends on algorithms [cf. Venables, W. N., & Ripley, B. D. (1999). Modern applied

OT: BibTex year-only citation in text?
Sorry for the off-topic question, but I know there are some talented
LaTeX users out there. Which bibliography style gives only the year in
text citations (e.g "for further details, see Anderson (1992)" )?
Thanks

run R under linux
Dear all,
Our department uses the linux system and we are not allowed to submit job
directly. We must make a batch to submit through "qmon".
so, I make a foo.sh file, which only contains one line: nohup R --vanilla <
foo.txt > foo.results
foo is all my codes. It is a simulation of 200 times. I set the seed at the
beginning. It is to estimate the success probability, which is

Question about the high dimensional density estimation
Hi,
I found that the R package "KernSmooth" can deal with only 1D and 2D data. But now I have a collection of 4-dimensional data (x1,x2,x3,x4) and would like to estimate the "mode" of the underlying density. What can I do about it ?
Thanks a lot.

Sweave/LaTeX Problem with EPS PDF
Dear List:
I am unsure if my problem is with Sweave or LaTeX. Anyhow, I am using the MikTeX distribution and TexnicCenter.
I can easily create Sweave files and all goes well until I try to incorporate graphics. I use the same code as found in the examples found in the users manual.
In R, the graphics I want are created as Sweave is creating the .tex file. When I examine the .tex file
