This is wrong: REpintf is like cat with file = stderr().

You can file it as a wishlist item in the bug trackign system. Without
a compelling case or a complete and well tested patch or both I doubt
it will rise to the top of anyone's priority list.

Are Rprintf and REprintf thread-safe?
Thanks - I'll find another way to send messages to the main thread for printing.

REprintf could be caught by tryCatch(message)
Dear R-devel community,
There appears to be an inconsistency in R C API about the exceptions
that can be raised from C code.
Mapping of R C funs to corresponding R functions is as follows.
error -> stop
warning -> warning
REprintf -> message
Rprintf -> cat
Rprint/cat is of course not an exception, I listed it just for completeness.
The inconsistency I would like to report is

Are Rprintf and REprintf thread-safe?
Is it safe to call Rprintf and REprintf from a background thread? I'm
working on a package that makes calls to fprintf(stderr, ...) on a
background thread when errors happen, but when I run R CMD check, it
says:
Compiled code should not call entry points which might terminate R nor
write to stdout/stderr instead of to the console, nor the system RNG.
Is it safe to replace these calls

Thank you Luke for prompt reply.
Is it possible then to request a new function to R C API "message"
that would equivalent to R "message" function? Similarly as we now
have C "warning" and C "error" functions.
Best,
Jan

bus error on calling nmmin
Hi,
I'm trying to get a toy program making use of nmmin to run
successfully. I've gotten to the point of compiling. However, when I
attempt to run my executable, I guess a bus error. I see that someone
else has asked about using nmmin before
<http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/06/03/23944.html>, but I
haven't come across any replies.
Is there some documentation on how to

auth_debug_passwords
Hi. I'm new to Dovecot and about to start using it in production. In
the config file, I set the option, auth_debug_passwords, to yes. I do
not see any failed passwords logged, however. It did cause more verbose
authentication logging, but failed passwords are still hidden.
I have also set these options to yes, because I thought they might be
required for auth_debug_passwords to work:

couldn't find function "setClass"
Hello ...
With a new checkout of R-devel (last update was 2003-09-11) we are having
a problem (it seems to be happening to all of us here on a few different
machines) where during install/check/etc when the 'save image' happens (in
packages using 'save image'):

segfault in browseURL()
Hello ...
Using Win2K (and reportedly WinXP), when the length of the 'url' string

This doesn't seem to be affecting unix machines.

install.packages() for a local file
Hello ...
I see that on Windows one can specify a filename as the "pkgs" argument
and then set CRAN=NULL when calling install.packages() for a local
file. Is there a way to do this on unix? It doesn't appear to be
possible, but perhaps I am missing something here.
Also, if indeed there is no method to do this on unix, is there a reason
behind it or has it just never been

Problem building R
I initially thought this only was the case for me on R-devel, but also
just tested it on the current R-patched and R-2.1.1 (so perhaps this more
belongs on R-help, but ...).
I'm having an odd error with the makefiles in src/library/XXX while
building R. When it tries to create the 'po' directory, the Makefile

patch to support custom HTTP headers in download.file() and url()
The patch below adds support for custom HTTP headers in
download.file() and url().
My main motivation for this is performing basic http authentication.
Some web sites do not support embedding the credentials into the URI
itself, they only work if the username and password are sent in the
HTTP headers. In fact specifying the username and password in the URI

installed.packages() with no packages

I found this due to a situation where installed.packages() was given a

I am trying to install R/Bioconductor on a G4 Mac running OS X. I
have successfully installed R so that a command window opens, but
installation of the downloaded Bioconductor package is giving me
