Interaction between callNextMethod() and selectMethod()
Hi,
Strange things happen. Here is a simple example:

Generic Functions
Hi
I have some problems in defining new generic functions and classes. Just

setClass("PROBECLASS",
representation(
type="character"

[Q] Get formal arguments of my implemented S4 method
I'm attempting to reflect the information for use with corresponding
fields in GUI (in a different package), to provide default values,
argname as key for UI label lookups, etc.
So I want something much more like the formals of the implementation:

"object",
"method": c("median", "vs", "tukey"),

Agreed, definitely. The current hack is to avoid re-matching arguments on method dispatch, so a fix would need to be fairly deep in the

confused by inheritance...
Hi r-devels,
I am stuck in some S4 inheritance problem:

does isGeneric work differently in 1.8.0 ?
Hello,
the last command (isGeneric) in following R-code (attached) produces
different output, depending on wheter 1.8.0 alpha or 1.7.1 is used.
Is that to be expected ?
Both R Versions were started with option vanilla

function showMethods and inheritance
Hi,
The following question might come from my (deep) misunderstanding
of the concepts in the package 'methods'.
I have a class 'A', and a class 'B' inheriting 'A' (so defined
with 'setClass' and the parameter 'contains="A"'. The class
A has a method 'mymethod'. A call to 'showMethods("mymethod")'

setReplaceMethod
Hi
If x <- 1:10 then x[5] <- 1i will promote
x to be a complex vector.
Suppose I have an S4 class "brob", and have functions
is.brob(), as.brob(), as.numeric() and so forth (minimal self-contained
code below).
If x is numeric (1:10, say) and y is a brob, what
is the best way to make
x[5] <- y
promote x to a brob in the same way as the complex example?
Or is

Question about setReplaceMethod
Hi
I have the code like I show below. The problem here is that I have a setReplacementMethod to set the value of my class slot. However, this function doesn't work when I call it within another function definition (declared by setMethod) of the same class. I do not understand this behavior that much. I'm wondering how to make this work? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

setReplaceMethod creates 'object' in the userworkspace
Hi,
I recognized that the function 'setReplaceMethod' is creating a
character vector in the user workspace having the name (e.g. "newClass")
of the class used as value. If you can sort out a mistake by myself, I
would like you to file a bug report.

How to reduce key strokes when defining S4 classes?
I feel tedious when I define a S4 class and the methods. For each
method, I have to call both setMethod and setGeneric (or both
setReplaceMethod and setGeneric). I would like a more compact grammar
so that I can reduce the key strokes. I'm wondering if there is a
better way available.

Class='A',
representation=representation(
x='numeric'

False positive note about ambiguous dispatch
Hi,
In the situation below the note issued by the dispatch algo doesn't
seem right:

group generics
I have classes A and B, where B contains A. In the implementation of
the group generic for B I would like to use the corresponding group
generic for A. Is there a way to do that?
I would also appreciate any comments if what I'm trying to do seems like
the wrong approach.
Here's a stripped down example:

S4 Generics and NAMESPACE : justified warning ?
Dear list,
It seems that a package (pkgB) using another package (pkgA) with S4
generics formed by taking existing functions (for example 'plot') must
not import the existing functions ('plot') in its namespace to avoid
the warning "replacing previous import: plot".
Suppose we use the simple 'import' directive in the name space of
pkgB.
pkgA and pkgB files would
