Samba serving files with *very* long access times
I access files on our Cray T3E from my Windows 2000 PC via a Samba share.
One of the volumes on the T3E is managed by Cray's Data Migration facility
(DMF). The majority of the DMF files are stored off-line and restored to
disk as necessary. This operation typically takes 3-5 minutes.
Normally when a Windows 2000 application tries to read data from one of the
off-line files--even if it's

Dear R users,
I have data on around 2000 birds from 3 generations for which I know
an individual's pedigree (i.e. the relationship it shares with other
individuals e.g brother, uncle, mother) and also a pedigree based on
foster-families, because half broods were removed from their nest of
origin and placed in a foster parent's nest.
From this I want to model two types of random

MCMCglmm multinomial model results
Hi David,
Thanks for your comment. I haven't posted the data because they are
unpublished and include human subjects so there are issues with sharing on
a list serv, but I thought perhaps someone had encountered a similar
problem and would already know the answer.
I will reconsider whether my University's ethics approval would allow me to
post the data and update the question if I think

Pedigree / Identifying Immediate Family of Index Animal
I have a data frame containing the Id, Mother, Father and Sex from about
10,000 animals in our colony. I am interested in graphing simple family
trees for a given subject or small number of subjects. The basic idea is:
start with data frame from entire colony and list of index animals. I need
to identify all immediate relatives of these index animals and plot the
pedigree for them. We're

Automatic renewal
The Ubuntu package for certbot comes pre-configured with systemd timer that will automatically renew existing certificates. What it does not handle however is reloading postfix/dovecot so that they will begin using the new certificates. For that, we need to implement a hook.
Certbot has both pre and post hooks that you can use to execute a script prior to and after the renewal

Hi,
I get my Email from my own SMTP server on the internet using
"fetchmail". Some time ago I did the smart thing and configured
dovecot to use SSL and the letsencrypt certificate that automatically
renews.
Welllll..... a few days ago my certificate expired and the fetchmail
deamon running in the background had nowhere to complain. So I didn't
notice.
It turns out that dovecot

Packages for Animal Models & QG analyses
Hi,
I am looking to do some quantitative genetic analyses using animal models
and was wondering if someone could suggest an appropriate package in R. It
would help if it was similar to the ASReml genetic analyses software.
Thanks,

Harmonic mean center of animal locations
Hello list;
I am working with a dataset containing animal locations over time for a large
number of individuals. I would like to compute a center of activity by
finding the minimum harmonic mean on a grid overlaying the points of an
animal (a "standard" to express center of activity in animal ecology).
I have searched the archives at Jonathan Barons server but have not been able

Adehabitat package question - trying to generate animal home ranges
Hello,
I'm new to R and am trying to use the adehabitat package for home range and
habitat selection analysis for some animal radiotelemetry data sets I have,
but I can't get the home range functions (mcp & kernelUD) to work with my
data. I think that my problem is that I don't properly understand how the
package uses data frames and factors, and I may not be defining the id

limiting simulated animal movement
Hi,
I am trying to simulate animal movement in a gridded landscape made up of
cells. At each time step (iteration), the animal moves from one cell to
another in a random fashion.
This is how I am simulating movement, where a and b are the x,y co-ordinates
of the animal at the previous time step:
for (i in 1:no.of.steps){
direction <- sample(1:8, 1)
if(direction == 1){
a <- a
b <- b -

Multilevel modeling of animal behavior
Hello all,
My question is how do I write a multilevel regression model of individual responses to environmental predictors that accounts for social interactions between individuals.
i.e.;
1) Individual response is nested within a group response.
2) The same environmental predictors apply to both hierarchical levels but,
3) Lower level slope/intercept are also affected by high-level response.

kinship package: drawing pedigree error
Hi
Im using the kinship package to draw a pedigree. On my data set this works fine but when i add indivudals to the pedigree i keep getting an error i hope someone can help me!
This is the code im using:
Data<-read.table("Tree.txt", header=T, sep=",")
attach(Data)
ped<-pedigree(id, dadid, momid, sex, aff)

Tidiest way of modifying S4 classes?
I wish to make modifications to the plot.pedigree function in the
kinship package. My attempts to contact the maintainer have been
unsuccessful, but my question is general, so specifics of the kinship
package might not be an issue.
My first attempt was to make a new function Plot.pedigree in the
.GlobalEnv which mostly achieved what I wanted to. However, I'm sure
that's not the tidiest

Anyone have experience with kinship pedigree plot?
Hello,
I am using the Kinship package to draw a pedigree plot. I am trying
to control the spacing between individuals in the pedigree.
Currently, it is drawing a pedigree with too little space, so the text
is overlapping. I'd like to increase the distance between
individuals. According to the documentation, I would expect the
following to be relevant:

Matrix problem to extract animal associations
Dear List,
I have been trying to extract associations from a matrix whereby individual locations are within a certain distance threshold from one another.
I have been able to extract those individuals where there is 'no interaction' (i.e. where these individuals are not within a specified distance threshold from another individual) and give these individuals a unique Group ID containing

Pedigreemm

plotting multiple animal tracks against Date/Time
Dear list,
I would like to create a time series plot in which the paths of several individuals are stacked above each other, with the x-axis being the total observation period of three years ( 1.1.2004 to 31.12.2007) and the y-axis being some defined range[min, max].
My data consist of Date/Time information and the paths of 45 individual as the distance from the location of release. An example
