nlme function summary.lmList cannot be found with new versions
Hello,
I installed the newest version of R (3.0.2) as well as the newest version of
nlme (3.1-113) in order to use summary.lmList and other nlme functions. Once
loading the new library, lmList and summary.lm can be found, but a number of
additional functions cannot be found via command.
Versions installed and loaded are correct. Any suggestions on how to allow
for these functions of the new

Possible bug when using encomptest
Hello R-Help,

Issues (there are 2):
1) Possible bug when using lmtest::encomptest() with a linear model
created using nlme::lmList()
2) Possible modification to lmtest::encomptest() to fix confusing fail
when models provided are, in fact, nested.

Problem with pairs() in nlme
Dear r-helpers,
After successfully running
require(nlme)
vfr.lmL <- lmList(
estimate ~ (slant + respType + visField + hand)^2 | subject, vfr
)
pairs(vfr.lmL, id = 0.01, adj = -0.5) # Pinheiro & Bates (p. 141)
produces the following error:
Error in sprintf(gettext(fmt, domain = domain), ...) :

Any guesses as to what I may have done wrong?

subset arg lmList
I'm having trouble understanding how functions in the subset argument for
lmList search for the objects they need. This trivial example produces
"Error in rownames(fakedf) : Object "fakedf" not found":

Why no BIC.default function?
I'm using R 2.0.1.
I looked in the email archives but didn't see anything on this topic.
I've noticed a surprising (to me) difference between AIC and BIC:

[1] AIC.default* AIC.logLik*
> methods("BIC")
[1] BIC.gls* BIC.lm* BIC.lme* BIC.lmList* BIC.logLik* BIC.nls*
The BIC.gls BIC.lm BIC.lme BIC.lmList and BIC.nls functions appear

possible bug in plot.intervals.lmList
Dear R-devel members,
I think I've found a minor bug in plot.intervals.lmList. ( The guide
https://www.r-project.org/bugs.html suggests to report it here, as I
do not have a bugzilla account.)
Here is a minimal reproducible example to demonstrate the problem:
fm1 <- lmList(distance ~ age | Subject, Orthodont)
plot(intervals(fm1),ylab="a")
This results in: "Error in

Problem with lme, ns and df (variable scoping problem?)
Hi,
I'm experimenting with random effect natural splines, and I've
encountered an odd problem.
library(nlme); library(splines)
a <- data.frame(x = 1:10, y = 1:10 + runif(10, min=-3, max=3), c =
rep(c(1,2),5))
df <- 10
lml <- lmList(y ~ ns(x,df=df) | c, a)
Error in df - 1 : non-numeric argument to binary operator
I presume this is because the formula isn't evaluated

Observed responses in 'augPred' data frame - Wrong order ?
Dea-R community.
I'd like to draw your attention to an issue I have recently
encountered while doing my current data analysis.
I've got an unexpected (to me) result from the command:
> augPred(lmList(my.object)),
'my.object' being a grouped data frame of class:
> class(my.object)

fixed effects
dear R wizards:
X is factor with 20,000*20=800,000 observations of 20,000 factors.
I.e., each factor has 20 observations. y is 800,000 normally
distributed data points. I want to see how much R^2 the X factors can
provide. Easy, right?

and
> aov( y ~ X)

is this computationally infeasible? (I am not an expert, but

changes to y-axis labels in lmList intervals plot
Dear List,
I am plotting lmList objects using plot(intervals()) in nlme
package. I want to make changes to the y-axis labels. When I
try to change cex of y-axis labels using the following:
fm1 <- lmList(distance ~ age | Subject, Orthodont)
plot(intervals(fm1), scales=list(y=list(cex = .7)))
I receive: Error in bwplot(formula = group ~ intervals | what,

error in lmLists in lme4 package (bug?)
Hello,
I am trying to use lmLists in the lme4 package and copying over very
standard code from the nlme package given in 'Mixed-Effects Models in S
and S-Plus'. It appears to not accept an 'I(age-11)' in the formula,
though it will accept the formula with out the subtraction of 11 from
age. This seems like it would be a bug, since this is standard formula
syntax, unless

I am using rw0641.
In my continuing quest to understand repeated measures analysis, I again
return to lme. I exported the Potthoff and Roy data Orthodont.dat from
S-PLUS 4.5 to avoid capture errors and ran the examples in the R help. I
imported the data.frame with
data <- read.table("Orthodont.dat",header=T)
attach(data)
and created the objects

Can anyone suggest why lm() doesn't complain here:

Using the lmList function from ?nlme package? I get the following error message:
?Error in !unlist(lapply(sum.lst, is.null)) : invalid argument type?
# this is the syntax used
# fm_cream <-lmList(MULTDV~TIME|cod, data=zz, na.action=na.omit)

Discrepancy between intervals.lme and coef.lme
I'm using R on Windows v2.0.1 with the nlme package (v3.1-53) and am finding some unexpected discrepancies in the output of intervals.lme and coef.lme. I've included a toy dataset at the end, but briefly, the data are longitudinal data from couples in marital therapy. Each spouse's relationship satisfaction is measured 4 times; I've fit both linear and quadratic models to the
