performance gap between R 1.7.1 and 1.8.0
Dear R-help,
A colleague of mine was running some code on two of our boxes, and noticed a
rather large difference in running time. We've so far isolated the problem
to the difference between R 1.7.1 and 1.8.0, but not more than that. The
exact same code took 933.5 seconds in 1.7.1, and 3594.4 seconds in 1.8.1, on
the same box.
Basically, the code calls boot() to bootstrap fitting mixture

plot.lm mislabels points with na.exclude (PR#3750)
R 1.7.1 on Windows XP
The "normal Q-Q plot" produced by plot.lm() mislabels points
when the model is fitted using na.action=na.exclude. Example:
x <- 1:50
y <- x + rnorm(50)
y[c(5,10,15)] <- NA # insert some NA's
y[40] <- 50 # add an outlier
plot(lm(y ~ x, na.action=na.omit)) # outlier correctly labeled in all
# four plots

adding option in the Windows installer for --internet2
[Not sure if such wishlist item should go to R-help or R-devel...]
It would be nice if an option can be added to the R for Windows installer
that will add the --internet2 option to the command line in the shortcut
that gets created. Also, is it possible to make that an option that can be
set at the R prompt, or perhaps even better, as the default no matter
how/where R is started? For those of

Problems with trying to print 'refman.pdf'
When I try to print out the refman.pdf file of version 1.3.0 to an HP
LaserJet 8000 PS printer, I get the error message "Error occurred while
downloading a font. This document might not print correctly". The document
does not print correctly. The index page looks fine on the monitor, but
appear to print with a "Courier" type font that is squeezed to be

Problems with make pdf (R-patched_2002-07-15.tar.gz)
After configure, make and make check on
a linux Suse 7.3 box, I run
make dvi and make info with no problems but get
a lot of garbage to my screen during make pdf.
Is this normal? Is there a bug in this part
of the installation?
This is part of what I get on the screen:

Isn't r-announce supposed to be moderated? I posted to r-announce about a
minor update in randomForest and was rejected. I was told that it's meant
for new or significant upgrades in packages, etc.

Problem running "make bitmapdll" with R-2.13 beta r55221 on Windows
Hello,
I am building R r55221 according to

Lwd ignored when printing on Windows
Dear R-help,
Has anyone notice the problem that, on Windows (NT and XP), when printing a
graph using the "File -> Print..." menu in the graphics window to print the
graph, that line width seemed to be ignored in the printed output? For
example, if I make a plot with plot(1:10, type="l", lwd=5), it looks right
on screen, but when printed out using the menu, it looks like

" cannot allocate vector of length 1072693248"
Andy;
Well, that about does it....
I'm copying this one back to the list for the benefit of those who may hit
this thread while searching the archives. Your changes to the code run just
fine on the my Windows machine, but gives the vector length error on the G4
whether I'm using the OS X build of R (as in Raqua) or the X11 build (for
Darwin). It is worth noting that I have nearly twice

Re: R-help Digest, Vol 2, Issue 26
With the same system configuration (WinNT4 SP6 and 1.7.0), I get such a Dr
Watson crash each time I try to use the Change dir... command in the File
menu of Rgui.exe. I doesn't seems to happen if I do this immediately after
starting R but well if I already did some computation.
I don't have any problem by using directly setwd().

Windows Printing and Line Widths
Hi all,
I develop and print from both Windows and Linux, and am seeing some
printing inconsistencies first described about a year and a half ago by
Andy Liaw (see below). Specifically, the line widths on my windows plots
are about 5 times smaller than that on Linux, and my windows printouts
do not match what my screen looks like. However, if I print to a pdf
file first, then I can get accurate

can I have a matrix of factors, please?
Dear R-help,
Is it a violation of the S language to have a matrix of factors? What I
would like to have is just a factor object that has dim attribute, and can
be printed (and subsetted) like a matrix; i.e., all columns/rows have the
identical levels. However, I can't get it to work:
> x <- factor(sample(2, 10, replace=TRUE))
> dim(x)<- c(5,2)
> x
