non-numeric binary ops?
Has there been a recent change in the behavior of binary operators? In SparseM it was, until quite recently ok to do scalar multiplication but now, > A*4 Error in A * 4 : non-numeric argument to binary operator > 4*A Error in 4 * A : non-numeric argument to binary operator > A%*%A An object of class "matrix.csr" Slot "ra": [1] 1 1 1 Slot "ja": [1] 1 2 3

calling files of commands in R
Please excuse me if this is a very basic question and I am just misunderstanding the basic structure of R. Right now, I am writing everything in a buffer (emacs) and then copying it into R when it is correct. Is there a way to save a file of commands and then just type the file name or something in R and have the commands executed within R? Anna

Packages in R & Java
Yes, lots of packages do use C/Fortran code ... it would be great if there were more packages that are "pure R" especially since the advent of S4 classes and namespaces. Is it worth suggesting that we create a designation "pure R" for packages that have no external source code and encourage more of these? Indeed, now the number of packages is so big could they be classified to

RE: [R] ^ operation much slower in R 1.7.1 than in R 1.7 .0 ???
I used the packaged "MinGW-2.0.0-3.exe" exactly as specified on http://www.stats.ox.ac.uk/pub/Rtools/ - in fact I used these recommendations throughout. According to the release notes MinGW version 2.0.0 contains the following list of packages: GCC-3.2-core-20020817-1 binutils-2.13-20020903-1 mingw-runtime-2.2 w32api-2.0 gdb-5.1.1-1 make-3.79.1-20010722 (binary renamed as mingw32-make)

Modulus operator??
I'm trying to do a modulus operator in R-1.2.2 on Windows -- specific version: R : Copyright 2001, The R Development Core Team Version 1.2.2 Patched (2001-03-22) Here's what the R language manual says: "R contains a number of operators. They are listed in the table below. [snip] % Modulus, binary" Here's what happens on the R console: > records <- 100000 >

possible bug in diag()
It concerns trival diagonal matrices: > diag(1) [,1] [1,] 1 > diag(rnorm(1)) <0 x 0 matrix> > diag(rnorm(1),nrow=1) [,1] [1,] 0.4843697 There's an obvious work around... but I thought it was worth notifying the list. Rblas for dual Xeon
Does anybody have a tuned Rblas.dll compiled against ALTLAS for a dual Xeon system? Unfortunately, we have very strict security that does not allow compilers of any sort on production desktops - we only have Pentium III development PCs. Problem with make recommended
I have been having problems making the recommended packages under windows NT when WINHELP is set to NO. It seems to go ahead and create the chm files and then fall over with an error. The base packages work fine. Clearly I can fix this myself messily, but I thought it might be useful feedback. Regards, John Marsland _ platform i386-pc-mingw32 arch i386 os mingw32 system

indexing into a list 2
I didn't explain myself well. You are right about not needing a list on the right hand side of the equation below. What I end up with is a list of arrays. Now what i would like to do is to access the individual elements in the arrays in the list. For example, when I type, y[[1]], I just get the whole first array. How do I get the first element in the first array for instance? Is

anova and tukeyHSD
I would like to do a one way anova and then a tukeyHSD. I have three vectors A,B and C. In a previous help message, I was told to do the following for the anova: y = c(A,B,C) group = factor(rep(a:3,c(7,9,13))) #provided there a 7 elements in A,9 in B and 13 in C and then anova(lm(y~group)) Looking at the tukeyHSD method it looks like it wants the aov method which I don't understand.

building packages using S4 methods
I have been building a package around a sequence of S4 classes which I have coded in separate *.R files in the "./R" subdirectory of the package. The package builds without error, but when I load it in R I get: Error in reconcilePropertiesAndPrototype(name, slots, prototype, superClasses) : Class "xxxx" extends an undefined class ("yyyyyy" I guess R is trying to

GDB under windows
Does anybody have some simple instructions to get me going using the GNU debugger GDB under windows with R? The R Extensions manual mentions briefly debugging under unix, but I've seen seen GDB mention in the Bloodshed Dev C++ IDE so it should be possible to use it with R? modulus operator gets syntax error (PR#925)
Full_Name: M. Edward Borasky Version: 1.2.2 OS: both Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 7.1 Submission from: (NULL) (208.130.245.188) According to the R language manual, "%" is the modulus operator. However, on both Windows and Linux, I get a syntax error when I type records <- 100000 records % 1000 I tried wrapping the operands with "as.integer ()" but that didn't help

c(...) and methods
I have been writing some S4 classes and have a problem about how I might pass a signature to "c()". Take the following example: setClass("collection", representation("list", date="POSIXt")) x <- new("collection", list(1,2,3), date=Sys.time()) y <- new("collection", list(4,5,6), date=Sys.time()) obviously, I can do c(x,y), but

Integer bit size and the modulus operator
I am a statistician and I come up to an interesting problem in cryptography. I would like to use R since there are some statistical procedures that I need to use. However, I run into a problem when using the modulus operator %%. I am using R 2.2.1 and when I calculate modulus for large numbers (that I need with my problem) R gives me warnings. For instance if one does: a=1:40; 8^a %% 41 one

Documenting classes and methods: was Re: R-devel Digest, Vol 3, Issue 23
Might it be an idea to make "?" a special operator akin to "+" or "[", R users could then write their own help functions - may be even making "?" generic? With the proposed xml help system one could imagine quite sophisticated context sensitive help systems. Regards, John Marsland PS this has been a very useful debate for those of us enthusiastically
