estimating number of clusters ("Null or more")
Hi all, once more about the old subj :-) My data has too much various distribution families and for every particular experiment I need just to decide whether the data is "quite homogeneous" or it has two or more clusters. I've revisited the following libraries: amap, clust, cclust, mclust, multiv, normix, survey. And I didn't find any ready-to-use general

Markov chain simulation
Hi, Does anybody know a function to simulate a Markov chain given a probability transition matrix and an initial state ? Thanks. error-prone feature?
Hi All, while looking why the cclust(cclust) doesn't work for 1-dimensional data, I've found unpleasant behavior in semantics of R. Indeed: is.matrix(matrix(cbind(c(1,2,3,4)),ncol=2)[1:2,]) == TRUE but: is.matrix(matrix(c(1,2))[1:2,]) == FALSE kind regards, Valery A.Khamenya --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bioinformatics

how to insert a double quote with the paste function?
Hello, I would like to write in a variable the following string : Hello "World" If I do cat("Hello ","\"World\""), I have the good result on the screen but it can not be affected to a variable. If I do the same thing with paste paste("Hello ","\"World\"") it does not work since \" seems to be not recognized. So what

cclust - cindex - binary data
Hi, I'm trying to debug a function I wrote to calculate the cindex for a hierarchical tree. For this it is useful to compare my calculations with those in output from the clustindex function, in the cclust library. There's no way, however, to have the cindex value for a given output of the cclust function, as a NA value is always returned. This happens almost surely because the cindex in

Line plots with different symbols on the same line
Hello, my data is an ordered list of observations where each observation is either of condition "efficient" (coded as 1) or "non-efficient" (0) as e.g. No. Obs Condition 1 1.1 0 2 1.2 1 3 1.4 1 4 1.5 0 5 2.5 1 etc. My goal is to plot a single line with lty='o' but different symbols for either condition whenever condition is 1 or 0, i.e. on the x-axis the

I am trying to use the function aggregate with the median function but I get the following error: Error in FUN(X[[1]], ...) : Argument "INDEX" When I replace median by mean, it works perfectly Can someone tell me where the problem comes from? Package cclust error
Hello, here is my problem, After looking at the mail archives, I found a description of the error I get when I use this package. At first I even tought that they were showing how to solve it. But the thing is that by saying "the programmer forgot drop=FALSE" doesn't show me how I should get rid of the problem I have looked inside the package very quickly and I found three

subscripting a one column matrix drops dimension
Hi all, Why subscripting a one column matrix drops one dimension? > x<- matrix(rnorm(100), ncol=1) > str(x) num [1:100, 1] -0.413 -0.845 -1.625 -1.393 0.507 ... > str(x[20:30,]) num [1:11] -0.315 -0.693 -0.771 0.448 0.204 ... > str(x[20:30]) num [1:11] -0.315 -0.693 -0.771 0.448 0.204 ... cluster indices
Hi- I'd like to apply some of the cluter indices, using 'clustindex' in the cclust package, but using output from hierarchical clustering using 'hclust' in the mva package. The two packages use a different format for storing the results of clustering; has anyone coerced one into the other? Thanks! -John Barnett

Clustering and Calinski's index
I have to solve a clustering problem. My first step is to determinate the number of clusters, that's why I 'm using the Calinski index ( [tr(b)/(k-1)]/[tr(w)/(k-1)] ) which i try to maximize to have the best number of clusters. A function is already implemented in R to calculate this index : clustIndex(cl,x, index="calinski") where cl is the result of a clustering method ,

approximation of CDF
Hi all, is there any package in R capable of smooth approximation of CDF basing on given sample? (Thus, I am not speaking about ecdf) In particular, I expect very much that the approximation should subject to the property: f(x0)<=f(x1) for x0<x1, where x0 and x1 belong to range of the sample given. Polynomial approximation could be OK for me as well. P.S.

calling R from C
Hi All, We'd like to use functions provided in R in our application. Our application is written in C/C++ and currently runs on win32, Linux and Mac. We'd be happy to attach the whole R ( i.e. not just transfer some function by hand). It is important that we deal with big amount of data, so "command line"-like invocations won't be very interesting. We'd
