Script file editors for Windows - submit highlighted text?
Greetings, I use S+, Stata, SAS and R depending on the weather... The script file editors in S+, SAS and Stata all allow me to submit a portion of a developing script file to the running process. In R I have to use an external editor and either source the entire file or do lots of copy-and-pasting. Are there any editors out there which interface to R more closely and let me submit a section

Linux editor for R+LaTeX, but not Emacs
Using Tinn-R (in windows) is possible to run latex and R from the same editor, which was great. Now, I am using Ubuntu-linux, which has been better than WinXP. Currently, I am using Emacs (and then install ESS) for running LaTeX and R from a same editor-program (like i was doing with Tinn-R in windows). Nevertheless, and even though i have been using Emacs for almost 2 years, it is not as

R command history -- can it be like Matlab's?
Hi all, In R GUI window, if you use "up" and "down" key, you will be able to recall the previous and next command that has been used and stored in the command history cache. But there is one inconvenience: In Matlab, you can type the first a few characters of the command that you previously used, and then press ?up" key, you will be able to get to that previous

R and ViM
Dear all, I'm starting to learn R, but I'm already programing for a while, using ViM as editor. Therefore I'd like to be able to use R together with ViM. My question now is, whether there are already people out there knowing how to do this in a similar easy way as with Emacs, and if those would be willing to share this knowledge. I did already research on the web on this topic,

EMACS/ESS problems
Hello all, since we're on the topic of R-editors. I am using emacs/ess on a unix workstation (to interact with R and have been having a little problem. I usually write the R commands I need to run in a separate buffer then copy and paste them into the *R* buffer for evaluation. The problem is, if any command is spread over multiple lines emacs/R hangs when I paste it in the R buffer for

select text using only the keyboard
I am using R 1.6.1 on Windows. I usually write/edit code in the R console, and when I get it working right, copy and paste it to a text file for later use. In Splus for Windows, this could be done easily using just the keyboard, with up-arrow, shift-end or shift-home, ctrl-c, etc. But in R, the shift key doesn't select text. The only way I can select text in R is with the mouse. Does

Interacting with R
Dear R folks, (Running Windows 98, Pentium II, 128 Mb RAM) I have been using Splus 2000 for about 1.5 years, and have recently begun using R. I love the Open Source philosophy! I may be switching to to Linux soon. My question: How do people most often interact with R? In Splus 2000, I used "Script" windows to write functions. "Script" windows were great because: 1..

How do I change the editor in R command window?
Dear R-help, I have started using R on my Linux box (Debian), and I have some problems with setting the editor/keyboard for R. The For instance, arrow-up gives "^[[A", and delete gives "^H". I have a Norwegian keyboard, but that doesn't cause any problems for editors like emacs. Could you advice me on how I can set the editor for R right? I have tried

Emacs & ESS under Windows
After the discussions about appropriate editors under Windows to use with R, I have managed to install Emacs, XEmacs, and ESS under WinNT 4.0, and these work fine. It's not necessary to compile anything to use R with ESS, just to install Emacs and ESS, and do a few modifications in some files. XEmacs is also easy to install but apparently ESS cannot run with it (confirmed by a message by Tony

unix-type commandline keystrokes in the windows RGUI
Hi all, I am generally quite fond of the unix commandline keystrokes (e.g. searching back in your history with [CTRL]-R, and cutting/pasting with [CTRL]-K/Y) which work in the R commandline in *nix. Does anyone know if there's any way to get similar functionality in the Windows RGUI? I know that as of now, [CTRL]-A and -E do the same as unix (beginning and end of line) and [CTRL]-Y does a

how to use a script file for all the codes?
Hi there, I am using the windows version R1.9.0. I used to be a Splus user. When I used Splus to try some computation, I like to put all my codes in a script file and check them line by line. This way I can keep track of all my thinking and it's very easy to make correction at some earlier steps. Now I can not find this script-file style in R. The software itself doesn't seem to have

colour highlighting inputs and outputs in the R terminal?
Dear all Is it possible to get basic colour highlighting for inputs and outputs in the R terminal? I am looking for something similar to what GUIs provide, such as JGR and (I think) the Windows R GUI: colouring all inputs in red, and all outputs in blue. All this in a colour-aware console (in my case, on Linux). I've been looking into xterm256 and highlight, but I am sofar unable to do with

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE. My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a **step by step** session with R and xemacs. The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is: 1) I start R in a terminal window; 2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R); 3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

RGui: windows-record and command history
a) How can I set the recording of all windows()-history forever to "true"? I want something like windows(record = TRUE) but not just for the window that opens then, but for all windows I will open ever. b) Scrolling up in RGui (windows 2000) to see past commands is nice, but: Is it possible to type eg "wi" and the "arrow up" and see the last command that started with

Script editor for Windows GUI
Dear R users / devs, There's been requests in the past for a text editor built into the Rgui for Windows, from which code can be submitted to the R console. Something along the lines of the script editor in S-Plus. Currently Rgui can only display a file read-only in a pager. As far as I can tell there's been little motivation to implement an editor, as most developers use (the

S+ style implementation of GAM for R?
Hi, I've got the R library "mgcv" for GAM written by Simon Wood which works well in many instances. However, over the years I got attached to the S+ implementation of GAM which allows loess smoothing in more than 1 dimension as well as spline smoothing. Has anyone ported the S+ GAM library to R? Scripting capabilities for R
I'm in the final week of teaching a course to beginners using R and S-Plus. Since I forbade the students from using the "point-and-click" interface in S-Plus, they've become reasonably proficient at using the command line in both programs. Students really like the speed and ease-of-use of R for the vast majority of their projects. I think they'd switch to R completely
