Tidiest way of modifying S4 classes?
I wish to make modifications to the plot.pedigree function in the
kinship package. My attempts to contact the maintainer have been
unsuccessful, but my question is general, so specifics of the kinship
package might not be an issue.
My first attempt was to make a new function Plot.pedigree in the
.GlobalEnv which mostly achieved what I wanted to. However, I'm sure
that's not the tidiest

Error in old$command == "default" : comparison (1) is possible only for

The function postscript() is creates a list called "old". the function
wants to access old$command, but old does not have a component called

Correct Computer Modern font in postscript(..) output
Hi,
I'm trying to get the correct font used when generating italic text in an R
grahic. I have a set of labels that print correctly except it seems the
italic text is justr a slanted version of the TeX computer modern normal
font... I'm using R v1.8.1 on Windows XP, and I get the same result if I
build the pdf using Adobe Acrobat or using MikTeX

Usage questions
Can I ask a couple of usage questions? (RedHat Linux 6.1, R-1.1)
1. This may just indicate I'm a dinosaur who can't leave SAS behind. I
want to write programs and run them with source() to see what they do,
then I would like to use the "up arrow" to go back through the commands
that were in the file, fiddle them, see what they do, and so forth. Is
there no way? SAS has a

Generating R plots via Ruby CGI
Greetings,
I'm trying to debug a simple two-line plot routine in R called test.R:
cor(swiss)
plot(swiss$Catholic, swiss$Examination)
These commands work fine when typed into R. They also work fine when
I invoke this routine by the following line into my terminal:
R --slave < /Library/WebServer/Documents/gsa/test.R
My ultimate goal is to send data to this R routine via a web

postscript()
Hi,
I've been trying out postscript() when onefile is set to FALSE. However
I'm having trouble understanding the documentation for postscript().
Suppose I want to do:
plot(1:10)
plot(1:10, type = "l")
and store them in foo.ps and goo.ps. Furthermore, I'd like to do then
with one postscript() command -- because this is just a simplified version
of what I really need

empty postscript output of figures
Hi,
I have a puzzeling problem. I want to export graphics from R to TeX via
postscript(). This works fine for some graphs, but for others, the eps
remain empty when viewed with GSView. When such an empty eps is imported
to TeX, the figure appears upside down and very small, irrespective of
TeX width and height commands. If I transform the eps to pdf, the
graphic shows up, but turned aqround 90°.

How to infer default width and height for a device?
Hi.
GENERAL:
Is there a general method for inferring default device settings,
particularly 'width' and 'height', that works for all devices? AFAIK,
the answer is no, but there might be functions out there that I don't
know of.
POSTSCRIPT SPECIFIC:
If not, I'm considering implementing such a method myself. Is it
possible for R to infer the default 'width' and

Problem with fontsize of pie-chart in postscript file
Hi all,
I've a problem with the size of the labels of my pie-charts when I try to
write them to a postscript file. I need to increase the default size, so I
change cex (see below). On screen this works fine, but cex doesn't seem to
affect the postscript-file. Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot,
Daniel

Defaults for postscript()
The defaults for postscript()

(it seems) date from the days when people used to used this to send plots
directly to a postscript printer via print.it=TRUE. I haven't done that
for years, and it seems that our current generation of students don't even
know the concept. It seems 'horizontal = TRUE' is particularly

I'm not shure but I guess that you miss a " and putted it in the wrong
place!
Try this: postscript("/pathto/filename.eps",horizontal=FALSE,onefile=FALSE)
Hope It helps.

PNG files and the png function
I can use a postscript device to produce a file which I can open with
the Gimp, then save quite a good png file.
If I try to use the png() function directly, I get something rather
like a graphics screen dump. The help file doesn't tell me whether it
should be like that or not.

.ps files in R
I have recently "printed" in R to a postscript file. I'm working on a SSH
without an X terminal. It was fairly automatic:
> plot(x,y)
> dev.off()
And then the default creates a file called Rplots.ps which I can ftp to my
laptop and open in Ghostscript. I can see the file, and nothing looks odd.
However, when I import it into LaTeX, it refuses to configure right side up.
