Illustrating kernel distribution in wheat ears
Dear all
R2.10 WinXP
I have a dataset dealing with the way different wheat cultivars build their yield.
Wheat ears are organised in spikelets where the spikelets can be numbered from the bottom, with even numbers on one side and odd on the other.
I know how many kernels there were in each spikelet after some months spent counting them...
Now I want to illustrate the differences between the

Gram-Charlier series
Good day everyone,
I want to use the Gram-Charlier series expansion to model
some data. To do that, I need functions to:
1) Calculate 'n' moments from given data
2) Transform 'n' moments to 'n' central moments, or
3) Transform 'n' moments to 'n' cumulants
4) Calculate a number of Hermite polynomials
Are there R-functions to do any of the above?

SmoothTrend in OpenAir
I'm trying to plot smooth trend using smoothTrend in OpenAir but I'm having
problems.
I used the following code.

setwd("c:/R")
#Load the openair library
library(openair)
#Load the data

what''s your rails wishlist?
I''ve been working with rails for a while now. Rails is the second web
framework I''ve tried. It blows the doors off catalyst (perl''s best
framework). I even just wrote my first plugin (broomstick). Ruby''s
ability to meta-program blew me away with it''s ease of use. I''ve been
so impressed with the helpers that rails uses to make a lot of

Converting factor data into Date-time format
Dear R-user,
I have read a dataset from .csv file into R. This dataset includes one
column containing some data in 'date and time' format, e.g. 'dd/mm/yyyy
hh:mm'.
These data were automatically read and saved as 'factor' in R. When I was
trying to produce some plots (such as time series) with the above 'date and
time' on x-axis, it caused some disodering problem,

Corruption issue found in e2fsprogs 1.41.5
Hi,
A critical regression has been discovered in e2fsck. The problem was
introduced in upstream 1.41.5 and is causing updates to block group
descriptors to be lost after journal replay. Our 1.41.5.sun2 (.sun1 too)
e2fsprogs version also suffers from this problem.
We are working on rebasing our e2fsprogs package on 1.41.6 (see bug
19852).
Until the new rpm is available (should be very soon), we

convert factor to indicator matrix
Hi,
I am looking for a function which can convert a single factor (a
vector), or a list of multiple factors, into the indicator (dummy)
matrix with 0/1 entries (or other contrasting schemes). I could cook it
myself, but I am actually sure this thing already exists - but forgot
the name and package. IIRC it was clearly different from model.matrix,
because it had a nicer, more straightforward

findInterval Documentation Suggestion
I've found over time that R documentation that comes off as terse at
first blush is usually revealed to be precise, concise, and complete
on close reading.? I'm sure this is also true of `?findInterval`, but
for whatever reason my brain simply refuses to extract meaning from it.
Part of the problem may be that we interact with the function via a
compressed form of the bounds of the

Polymorphism of predict
I can fit a line to a set of given points, e.g.,
> sm.fit <- smooth.spline(1:4,1:4)
> lm.fit <- lm(y~x, data=list(x=1:4,y=1:4))
Now I have two objects representing the straight line y(x)=x, of class
"smooth.spline" and "lm", respectively.
And as could be expected in object orientation, both have a method
"predict", which I could use for

Implicit vs explicit printing and the call stack
Hi everyone,
I've run into a bit of strange problem with implicit vs explicit
printing and the call stack. I've included an example at the bottom of
this email. The basic problem is that I have an S3 object with a
print method. When the object is implicitly printed (ie. typed
directly into the console) the function arguments in the call stack
are exploded out to their actual values,

Problem with factor analysis
Hi all,
I am using the example on page 737 of "The R Book" by Michael J Crawley,
to plot factor loadings against each other (in a multivariate analysis).
However the following line code
plot(loadings(model)[,1],loadings(model)[,2],pch=16,xlab="Factor 1",
ylab="Factor 2")
throws an error message

What are controller modules *for*?
I am aware that controllers can be placed in modules:
ruby script/generate controller modulename/controllername
But what does this buy me? Is it just a way of ensuring that my source
code is nicely arranged, or can I use the fact that a set of controllers
are all within a particular model to implement functionality common to
all of those controllers?
Why am I asking?

elegant solution to transform vector into percentages?
Hi,
I am looking for an elegant way to transform a vector into percentages of values
that meet certain criteria.
store<-c(1,1.4,3,1.1,0.3,0.6,4,5)
# now I want to get the precentages of values
# that fall into the categories <=M , >M & <=N , >N
# let
M <-.8
N <- 1.2
# In my real example I have many more of these cutoff-points
# What I did is:
out <- matrix(NA,1,3)
