Redundant text in help page for eigen
I noticed that there is some redundant text in eigen.Rd (both the patched and the devel version). "whereas" appears to be a leftover of previous versions. \source{ By default \code{eigen} uses the LAPACK routines \code{DSYEVR}, \code{DGEEV}, \code{ZHEEV} and \code{ZGEEV} whereas LAPACK is from \url{http://www.netlib.org/lapack} and its guide is listed in the references. }

the puzzle of eigenvector and eigenvalue
Dear all I am so glad the R can provide the efficient calculate about eigenvector and eigenvalue. However, i have some puzzle about the procedure of eigen. Fristly, what kind of procedue does the R utilize such that the eigen are obtained? For example, A=matrix(c(1,2,4,3),2,2) we can define the eigenvalue lamda, such as det | 1-lamda 4 | =0 | 2 3-lamda | then

problems compiling for RHEL 5.3 x86_64
Well, CentOS 5.3, which amounts to the same thing. I recently decided to upgrade my main research machine from Fedora Core 8 -> CentOS 5.3. Basically, I was looking to move to a distro with longer 'term-of-life' than the release schedule for Fedora currently allows. The machine is a multi-Opteron box, so both 32- and 64-bit apps natively supported. Since I do a lot of 'linear

NA in eigen()
Hi, I am using eigen to get an eigen decomposition of a square, symmetric matrix. For some reason, I am getting a column in my eigen vectors (the 52nd column out of 601) that is a column of all NAs. I am using the option, symmetric=T for eigen. I just discovered that I do not get this behavior when I use the option EISPACK=T. With EISPACK=T, the 52nd eigenvector is (up to rounding error) a

eigen() may fail for some symmetric matrices, affects mvrnorm()
Hi all, Recently our statistics students noticed that their Gibbs samplers were crashing due to some NaNs in some parameters. The NaNs came from mvrnorm (Ripley & Venables' MASS package multivariate normal sampling function) and with some more investigation it turned out that they were generated by function eigen, the eigenvalue computing function. The problem did not seem to happen

R crashes during 'eigen'
Hi all, Hi, When I want to compute the eigenvalues & eigenvectors of a specific matrix, R crashes (i.e. it stops responding to any input). I've tried it with different versions of R (2.1.1, 2.2.0, 2.2.1) - all with crashing as result. What I did before the crash was: M <- as.matrix(read.table("thematrix",header=T)) eigen(M) If, instead of eigen(M), I use eigen(M,

R-alpha: eigen and batch
Batch: Putting q(save=F) at the end of my file does not work in my context because I can no longer source the file without quitting. I have that quit statement in my .First so that I always quit that way interactively. The problem is that it is ignored in batch. eigen: The crash occurs on my 586 running Red Hat Linux 2.0.27 but not on my son's 486 running SLackware Linix 2.0.29. We both

Problems with Lapack's eigen() on 64-bit
I'm only now realizing that we have severe problems with R on our AMD 'Opteron' and 'Athlon64' clients running Redhat Enterprise with all 64-bit libraries (AFAICS). The Lapack problem happens for R-patched and R-devel both on the Opteron and the Athlon64. Here are platform details: o "gcc -v" and "g77 -v" both end with the line gcc version 3.2.3

Plotting female and male signs
Dear R-users, Just like other users (as seen from previous posts on the list), I would like to use female and male signs in plots. I found B. Ripley's post about using Unicode characters. However, it doesn't works for me. > text(locator(1),"\u2640") produces the following error: Error: invalid \uxxxx sequence But I can specify other Unicode characters as long I

eigen of matrix of Inf hangs (PR#5406)
Full_Name: Patrick Burns Version: 1.8.1 OS: Windows 2000 Submission from: (NULL) (81.129.3.151) The command: eigen(matrix(Inf, 2, 2)) causes version 1.8.1 to hang in both Windows 2000 and SuSe 8.2. (Hang defined as apparently needing to kill the process in order to get a prompt back.) This is similar to bug #4366 where the same command used NaN instead of Inf.

understanding eigen(): getting non-normalized eigenvectors
Hi, dear R pros I try to understand eigen(). I have seen, that eigen() gives the eigenvectors normalized to unit length. What shall I do to get the eigenvectors not normalized to unit length? E.g. take the example: A [,1] [,2] V1 0.7714286 -0.2571429 V2 -0.4224490 0.1408163 Calculating eigen(A) "by hand" gives the eigenvectors (example from Backhaus,

The eigen function
I'm using R version 2.0.1 on a Windows 2000 operating system. error code 1 from Lapack routine 'dsyevr'
Hi, I got an error message in my program saying "Error in eigen(gene_intersection.kernel) : error code 1 from Lapack routine 'dsyevr' Execution halted". As you see, I was trying to compute the eigenvalues of a matrix but got this error. Is there anyone who knows what this error means and how I can fix it? Theoretically the eigenvalues should be nonnegative, if it helps.

spdep error message
Hello, I have been using the package "spdep" to run spatial regressions on a data set with about 2500 observations. It has performed well up until now, but the following code resulted in an error: > load("Panel.90s.ok.R") > attach(Panel.90s.ok) > neighs<-dnearneigh(cbind(x,y),0,50000) > help(nbdists) > dists<-nbdists(neighs,cbind(x,y)) >

2.9.0 and make check errors | mystery deepens
So, I tried the following configure: ./configure --with-lapack --with-blas --with-tcltk No use of ACML at all, but both lapack and blas. Configure proceeds without any errors. Make, same thing. Make check - same problem with stats. But, this time a .fail file got created in tests/Example. Bottom of the file has something which might resonate with someone out there: Error in La.svd(x, nu,

Environment problems
Dear list readers, Can someone of you explain this behavior. Here's a toy example: Start by constructing a function tmp >fix(tmp) In the default editor enter this one-liner: hist(rnorm(10)) close the editor and run environment on the function. > environment(tmp) <environment: R_GlobalEnv> Open the editor and remove the last parenthesis, this will make the editor choke.

Filled triangles in lattice graphics?
Dear R users, I can get a filled triangle pointing upwards by specifying pch=17 in xyplot or lpoints, but how do I get a filled triangle that points downwards? In the standard plot function it's possible to use plot(x,y,pch=25,bg="black"), but bg= doesn't seem to work with lattice and lpoints. Thanks, Hans Gardfjell Ecology and Environmental Science Ume?
