X11 fonts cannot be loaded - SuSE Linux solution
Dear list,
I would like to make a comment how to solve the X11 font problem under
SuSE Linux (9.0) when you get the message:
"X11 font at size 16 could not be loaded".
After having modified /etc/X11/XF86config as root (see below) you have
to run 'SuSEconfig' as root as well else nothing might be changed in the
X-Server.
After that no further messages should appear.

X11 font problem
Dear R users,
I've just upgraded from R 0.64.1 to 1.1.0 on a PC running Red Hat Linux
6.0. When I ran demo(graphics), after the command:
title(main = "January Pie Sales", cex.main = 1.8, font.main = 1)
the plot did not materialise and I received this error message:
Error in title(main = "January Pie Sales", cex.main = 1.8, font.main = 1)

"X11 font at size 16 could not be loaded"
Hi,
I'm using plot.lda (R1.4.0 on linux) and,
if dimen > 2, I get the error:
Error in text.default(x, y, txt, cex = cex, font = font) :
X11 font at size 16 could not be loaded
The traceback indicates that the problem
comes from pairs(). I've tried several
cex and font values, always with the
same error.
The same command works fine with pdf()
If I'm missing fonts, how

Font problem
Some plots fail due to a problem with the X11 fonts. I get a message that
"X11 font at size 22 could not be loaded." The demo() graphics routine for
instance dies during the third chart. The graphics demo calls "font.main=1"
and that seems to be where the error is. I believe this is due to a
configuration problem on my system, however I can't find where in the

X11 Fonts sizes
In postscript graphs (pointsize = 10, different sizes in graph adjusted via

I use

even when I want the file from the directory where I'm working.
I have tried to fix it through preferences

Desperate: problems with fonts, I can not make it work
I am trying to make wine run with a couple of windows
applications and there is no way I can get normal fonts.
All I get is little squares instead.
I have set up a directory
/home/username/.wine/fake_windows/Fonts
that has quite a few .ttf files that I got from my Windows98
partition. I have also set up chkfontpath to the right path
(please see attached files). Then what can be wrong? I

bootstrap package
Hello R'ers
In previous versions of R (I now use 2.0.1) there was a package
"bootstrap". I wrote some programs that depended heavily on this package
but can unfortunately not find it on Cran today. Is there any way to
find an older version of "bootstrap" and use it with the new version -
2.0.1?

Set font and size in xterm
I have a situation where gnome console does not handle vt102 escape
sequences properly and therefor need to employ xterm instead. When
I run xterm from a gnome terminal window I am presented with an
extremely small terminal window employing an almost unreadably small
font.
I have attempted to set the font size using xrdb and a custom
.Xresources file. I can change the colour scheme. I can

'rush of graphs on the screen'
Hello R experts,
When I try e. g. example(plot) in R 1.7.0 on Linux, the example graphs rush
away on the screen before my eyes. How can I see them one at a time?

Hello,
A small problem I can't solve

How can I force the printout of p to 0.0001?
I have tried 'format', 'round', 'signif', 'print' in different combinations without success.

"Missing value representation in Excel before extraction to R with RODBC"
Dear list,
How should missing values be expressed in Excel before extraction to R
via RODBC. I'm bewildered. Sometimes the representation with NA in Excel
appears to work and shows up in R as <NA> but sometimes the use of NA in
Excel changes the whole vector to NA's. Blank or nothing or NA as
representation for missing values in Excel with dateformat gives NA's of
the whole

Scripts in R?
Hello,
In S-Plus for windows there is a possibility to work with 'scripts' (at least from version 4.5). Is there an equivalent 'function' in R or is there a simular way to work in R
Sincerely

"mantel.haenszel.test for trend in S-plus doesn't work i R"
Dear R'ers,
When I used S-plus i wrote a small program for a Mantel-Haenszel test
for trend (I think it worked). Unfortunately I can't get it working in
R.
It appears as if my use of 'el' is the problem but I can't sort it out.
Error in apply(array, c(, 2, 3), function(el) el * 1:s) :
argument is missing, with no default
Further down in the program I use 'el'

"Dotted lines at the end of the KM-curve"
R-ers!
Referees demand that the line in the KM-curve should be changed to
dotted at the point where standarerror is <= 10 %. I don't think it's
a good habit but I urgently need to implement such a thing in R with
survfit, survplot or another program. They also want numbers at risk
below the curve
Some help, please....

I reproduce from memory my exhaustive look into this issue.
RODBC uses the Microsoft ODBC DLL's developed by Microsoft.
These DLL's perform an automatic determination of column type based on the contents of the first N rows of cells in each column, where N [0,16]. N may be set in the Windows system registry, and there are a few other things that may be set in the system registry which
