Hi all,
I'm trying to work out the following problem, but I can't imagine how.
I have the following (much reduced & oversimplified) dataset

fastbw question
Hello
I am running R 2.0.1 on Windows, I am attempting to use Frank Harrell's
'fastbw' function (from the Design library), but I get an error that the
fit was not created with a Design library fitting function; yet when I
go to the help for fastbw (and also look in Frank's book Regression
Modeling Strategies) it appears that fastbw should work with a model
created with lm.....

polr and optim question
Hello again
I am trying to fit an ordinal logistic model using the polr function

I get an error

Registry entries
Can anyone point me at a good doc on farting about with the registry?
Or do you feel like giving me the fool's guide?
I have large tracts of registry entries to stuff in, and adding them via
Edit/new in regedit is an absolute PITA and unworkably slow.
I have files from exported from a win98 registry (via windoze regedit)
with the correct info.
I need to add because programs are not finding

ggplot2: mixing colour and linetype in geom_line
Hi all,
I try to represent a multiple curve graphic where the x-axis is the
temperature and the different y-axes are the different X (X22,X43,X44...)
some X corresponds to the same molecule (22 and 44 are for CO2 for instance)
so I use the same colour for them.
I wanna mix the linetype with the colour to be able to visually see the
difference between X43 and X45
The best I have done up to now

Does anyone know the appropriate R code to obtain census tracts (tract

Thank you,

lme4/lmer: P-Values from mcmc samples or chi2-tests?
Dear R users,
I have now tried out several options of obtaining p-values for
(quasi)poisson lmer models, including Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling
and single-term deletions with subsequent chi-square tests (although I
am aware that the latter may be problematic).
However, I encountered several problems that can be classified as
(1) the quasipoisson lmer model does not give p-values when

Interpreting NB GLM output - effect sizes?
Hi,
I am trying to find out how to interpret the summary output from a neg
bin GLM?
I have 3 significant variables and I can see whether they have a
positive or negative effect, but I can't work out how to calculate the
magnitude of the effect on the mean of the dependent variable. I used
a log link function so I think I might have to use the antilogs of the
coefficients but I have no idea

Questions of t.test {stats}
We are currently using the t-test in Package stats,
t.test(x, y = NULL, alternative = c("two.sided", "less", "greater"),
mu = 0, paired = FALSE, var.equal = FALSE,
conf.level = 0.95, ...)
but have some troubles :
1. why does the t-test take so a long time to perform a single test on a row
of a data.frame ? Is there any alternative function to perform

gee and geepack: different results?
Hi, I downloaded both gee and geepack, and I am trying to understand the
differences between the two libraries.
I used the same data and estimated the same model, with a correlation
structure autoregressive of order 1. Surprisingly for me, I found very
different results. Coefficients are slightly different in value but
sometimes opposite in sign.
Moreover, the estimate of rho (correlation

Finding LD50 from an interaction Generalised Linear model
Hi,
I have recently been attempting to find the LD50 from two predicted fits
(For male and females) in a Generalised linear model which models the effect
of both sex + logdose (and sex*logdose interaction) on proportion survival
(formula = y ~ ldose * sex, family = "binomial", data = dat (y is the
survival data)). I can obtain the LD50 for females using the dose.p()
command in the MASS

Poll - Would you pay $30-$50 for high quality speech synthesis?
Many of you are familiar with how lousy Festival sounds.
AT&T has a product, NaturalVoices, that sounds much better. There are
male & female voice fonts for US/UK/Indian English, French, Spanish,
and German.
I am considering offering a linux-based text-to-speech engine based on
the NaturalVoices runtime. An asterisk module would also be provided,
making it easy to add natural sounding
