RODBC
Hi,
I am running the RODBC examples form the help guide. I am trying to
UPDATE a table in an Access data base but I am having an error.
library(RODBC)
library(termstrc)
path = getwd()
setwd(getwd())
dbName = "data.mdb"
pathdbname = paste(path,"/",dbName,sep="")
accesChannel = odbcConnectAccess(pathdbname, uid = "", pwd = "")

Searching for a string in RSQLite
I'd like to search for a particular string in an SQLite database using
RSQLite, but I'm running into problems constructing the query
properly, because of embedded quotes and parens in the string.
Is there a function that escapes these for me, or some other fixup
that would let me do the queries below? In the real situation I don't
have control over what strings get searched for.

generic database access methods
I've been putting together a package that defined generic methods for
database access. The packages is called "Rdbi." It borrows as much as
possible from existing database packages / proposals. I'd like to start
a discussion about the proposed interface. Here's what I've come up
with so far:
#
# Rdbi: connectionMethods.R
#
dbConnect <- function(dbObj, ...)

R/S and large datasets - Database access (also Re: SAS and S/R)
A consensus seems to emerge : R would excel to exploratory work on
small/middle-sized datasets, while SAS would be able to munch much
larger datasets.
However, I see the "size" problem as a red herring. The objects that
have to stay "in core" are usually much smaller than the dataset. For
example, for problems involving fixed-effects linear models, you need
only some

sqlSave() Question
All,
I am new in R. I found sqlSave() doesn't work for our Oracle9i. The
following was the message:
> sqlSave(channel, USArrests, rownames="state")
Error in sqlColumns(channel, tablename) : USArrests : table not found on
channel
Check case parameter in odbcConnect

sqlQuery() works OK.
Please help. Thanks.

What is the 'scale' in princomp() function?
Dear R users,
When I tried to use princomp() from stats packages to do Principal
Components Analysis, I am not very clear what is the "scale".
And the scores are different from "PROC PRINCOMP" procedure from SAS.
Using the example data from this package:
restpc <- princomp(USArrests, cor = TRUE)
> restpc$scale
Murder Assault UrbanPop Rape
4.311735 82.500075

prcomp : plotting only explanatory axis arrows
Dear all,
I have a very large dataset (1712351 , 20) and would like
to plot only the arrows that represent the
contribution of each variables.
On the sample below I woild like to plot
only the explanatory variables (Murder, Assault..)
and not the sites.
prcomp(USArrests) # inappropriate
prcomp(USArrests, scale = TRUE)
prcomp(~ Murder + Assault + Rape, data = USArrests, scale = TRUE)

RODBC sqlSave problem.
Dear list,
Being new to both the postgres database, ODBC and the RODBC interface, I
am somewhat confused by some of the problems I am experiencing trying to
connect R to the database.
Whai I am trying is basically the example part of the help file for the
sqlSave function:
> library(RODBC)
> odbcConnect("theodor") -> channel

RODBC under Windows
Hi,
I have been just playing with the ODBC connectivity under Windows. I have
never done this before and I thought I would go through some examples in
the "Data Import/Export" manual and learn how to setup data connections
while doing that. I ran into a small problem and I am not sure if this is
something I am doing wrong or a bug or, perhaps, a feature of the RODBC
package.
Here is

Creating datasets in packages
I am developing an R package which includes datasets. The build and
install works correctly. However, when I access the dataset
("BowRiver"), I get:
> data(BowRiver)
> BowRiver
Error: object "BowRiver" not found. However, I can access the dataset
from

Example R datasets (such as USArrests) are loaded and can be accessed by
the dataset name:

RPgSQL, Rdbi.PGSQL, and Rdbi for Windows?
Dear list members,
I wonder whether anyone has succeeded in building either the RPgSQL or the
Rdbi.PGSQL and Rdbi packages for Windows. If so, would you be willing to
share either the binary package(s) or instructions about how to set up the
configure scripts? My preliminary efforts to get things going under Windows
2000 haven't met with much success.
Thanks,
John

arithmetic with zero-column data.frames
So as often there is more to it than you first think.
Let's consider this an RFC (for experienced long time R users) :

RODBC problems
Hi all.
I'm trying to see how the package Rodbc works, with R 1.2.2, win98 and MySql 3.23.
I'd like to export a dataset with 524 variables and 3440 records form R to MySql. I issued the following commands:
library(RODBC)
channel <- odbcConnect("test")
sqlSave(channel,dat=totale)
Error in sqlTables(channel)[, 3] : incorrect number of dimensions
Actually it gave me other

problem with lists...
Hi guys,
I am new to R, so sorry if my problem seems trivial.
Sometimes I encounter some lists, which I cannot index their components
with [ . ]
For instance the prcomp() function returns a 'prcomp' object whose
components are some 'lists'. the second component is a list that
comtains the following:

> class(mylist)

Should arithmetic operations work on zero-column data.frames (returning a

unable to load package RPgSQL
Hi all,
I'm trying to install an add-on package for R called RPgSQL. Its role
will be to link R with a PostgreSql database. I work on a Linux machine.
However, I'm quite a newbie as far as R's concerned, and I don't manage
to install the package properly.
That's the steps I followed :
* downloading the package (archive)
* R CMD INSTALL /path/to/package.tar.gz (as
