A good DBMS for R?
<PRE>I am looking for suggestions for a good Database Management System to use with R. The main use of this will be to format, query and make subsets of large datafiles for use in R. I recall reading a comparative write-up either in the newsletter, in the mails or someone's webpage last summer, but cant seem to find it now. I will be thankful if someone can help in locating such

Which DBMS to use?
I'm currently trying to do analysis on a 565k record database of Philadelphia's property assessments. I read the Data Import/Export .pdf and am still conflicted about which DBMS I should use to maintain reliability and ensure I don't crash while trying to do my calculations. Should I go with PostgreSQL for the option of Proxy Data Frames or should I go with MySQL for the "lean

Linux DBMS to share with Win
I'm using Samba to allow my users to store their database on a Redhat 6.1 file server. I've got some who want to shift to using Linux instead of Windows but the DBMS they use is not supported (yet... I'm told) on Linux and I'm afraid that multi-user access on different OS's are going to screw things all to high heck anyways... But that being said... Are there existing

RMySQL installation and loading errors
Hi R users, I have been trying to install and use RMySQL on Windows98 for MySQL3.23.55-max using the pulldown menu. I am getting the following errors. I read the doc and some archived mails about a similar problem on unix like systems. Still can't get it to work. Some info below that may indicated where the problem is: * The directory RMySQL\libs is empty---I was not expecting this. *

I need help. I'm trying to connect with an Oracle DBMS and MySQL DBMS, I'm using RJDBC package. My code is the next: library('rJava') library('DBI') library('RJDBC') //Mysql drv <- JDBC("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver","C:\\Temporal\\mysql-connector-java-3.0.9-stable-bin.jar","'") conn <- dbConnect(drv,

Subpopulations in Complex Surveys
Hi, is there a way to analyze subpopulations (e.g. women over 50, those who answered "yes" to a particular question) in a survey using Survey package? Other packages (e.g. Stata, SUDAAN) do this with a subpopulation option to identify the subpopulation for which the analysis shoud be done. I did not see this option in the Survey package. Is there another way to do this?

Database Connection Problem with RMySQL package
Folks, I failed to create a connection to the database under MySQL DBMS in the R system via RMySQL's method dbConnection(...). My setup is as follows: Microsoft Windows XP 5.1.2600 MySQL 4.1.9 R 2.0.1 DBI 0.1-8 RMySQL 0.5-5 Both of DBI and RMySQL packages were downloaded from bell lab: http://stat.bell-labs.com/RS-DBI/download/index.html My case in R is as follows: > library(DBI)

Barplot - Can't figure it out
Hi, I have two catagorical vectors like this; x = c(1, 2, 4, 2, 1) y = c(2, 4, 2 ,4, 1) I want to set up a barplot with the catagories 1-4 horizontally and number of occurances vertically for each vector x,y. I've tried boxplot(table(x,y), beside=T) and boxplot(c(x,y), beside=T) among others, but can't get it to work...Any ideas? I'd apppreciate any help

seeking hardware/software consultant to build system with 64-bit OS, R, SQL DBMS
I am seeking to hire a hardware/software consultant to help me build a stem with a 64 bit OS, R, and a SQL-compatible DBMS. Please contact me if you know of anyone qualified. Details: I am in need of a robust system that will run R, and a SQL compatible database. I will be working with large datasets, and wish to take advantage of as much RAM as possible, and therefore think I should use a 64

RMySQL and Blob
Dear R experts, Does RMySQL package handle Blob datatype in a MySQL database? Blob can represent an image, a sound or some other large and complex binary objects. In an article published by R-database special interest group, named "A common database interface (DBI)" (updated June 2003), it's mentioned in "open issues and limitations" that "We need to carefully plan

Connecting to database on statup
Hello, Q/ Is it possible to create a DBMS connection automatically on startup of R? (Making sure of course that the db server has been started...) I am running MySQL on Mac OS X 10.4.2 with R2.4.1. I have tried to write a function using the RMySQL commands (below) and place them in .First of .RProfile: drv <- dbDriver("MySQL") dbcon <- dbConnect(drv, {other parameters present in

RoR, pg_connections, and pg_users
In a RoR application, is it possible to have individual userids associated with particular sessions employed to establish their related connections to the postgresql DBMS backend and, if so, is this design desireable? What are the implications for performance and future deployment limitations? The idea behind this question is that in our application certain tables require that the last

recommended combo of apps for new user?
Hi there, I would like some advice, not so much about how to use R, but about software that I need to complement R. I've rooted around in the FAQ's and done a few searches on this mailing list but haven't quite found the perspective I need. I am an experienced data analyst in my field (forest ecology and ecological monitoring) but new to R. I am a long time user of SPSS and have

rpart error when constructing a classification tree
I am trying to make a decision tree using rpart. The function runs very quickly considering the size of the data (1742, 163). When I call the summary command I get this: > summary(bookings.cart) Call: rpart(formula = totalRev ~ ., data = bookings, method = "class") n=1741 (1 observation deleted due to missingness) CP nsplit rel error 1 0 0 1 Error in yval[, 1] :

tabular data (was RE: [R] Removing "row.names")
Hi, I agree that replacing data.frames for modeling functions would be too painful. Also I agree with Thomas that new class(es) for tabular data should not inherit from data.frame, and that data.frames should conceptually inherit from some other base tabular data class. At this point I'm not suggesting anything in concrete --- I haven't sorted it out in my own mind --- but I want

Rails SQL generation (Firebird adapter) - can someone explain ...
I see some possible issues with the SQL that is being generated by the firebird adapter. Every SQL is being generated on the fly by concatenating strings. Can someone please explain why the SQL is being generated the way it is? I cannot use this in real life for a couple of reasons: 1. This introduces a security hole because a user, accidentally or deliberately, could potentially submit a

best predictive model for mixed catagorical/continuous variables
Would anybody be able to advise on which package would offer the best approach for producing a model able to predict the probability of species occupation based upon a range of variables, some of them catagorical (eg. ten soil types where the numbers assigned are not related to any qualitative/quantitative continuum or vegetation type) and others continuous such as field size or vegetation height.

IPC
Hi, I need to somehow make R communicate with another remote JAVA process which provides compute services. I have control over the communications protocol, but I would like to keep it to a standardised protocol, such as SOAP, CORBA, etc. What I would like to know is, what do other people use to do this? The nature of the communications will be low bandwidth procedure calls, with little data.

Statistical analysis of huge datasets.
Dear R-users, I am faced with the problem of analyzing a huge dataset (+ 2 million records, +150 variables) which does not fit into memory. I would like to know if there are pre-packaged tools (in the spirit of Insigthful I-Miner, for instance) aimed at subsampling or splitting the dataset into data-frameable subdatasets, applying functions record-wise, etc. Thank you very much for your
