Webrick in production?
Would you bother to setup a fastcgi for a "intranet accessible" application
that is like to get < 100 hits a day?

Rails on Tomcat or JBoss?
Hi all,
The Rails book talks about running Rails under Apache, but is there a
(relatively) easy way to deploy it to either Tomcat or JBoss? Is the CGI
servlet the only option?
Thanks,
Ken

What is so hard about Rails deployment?
Recently there has been a lot of fuss about the ease of Rails
deployment. People made various claims, such as "I''ve deployed PHP,
Java, (insert something else here) and Rails. Rails is by far the most
painful." and "Java deployment (with Tomcat) is easier."
I have no experience with Java deployment. But I have a friend who has
worked on several high-end software

Anyone successfully ran JRuby 1.5.3, Rails 3, Tomcat6
Hi,
I''ve been trying to get JRuby 1.5.3 with Rails 3 to run on the Tomcat6
server with little success.
Has anyone been able to do this? If so, what issues did you have to
overcome to get this to work?
Also, is this a combination that you would recommend for a production
site, or is it all too new and untested?
The latest issue I''m stuck on right now is with the mysql-connector-

Ruby server infrastructure evolution -> app. servers?
All,
Just musing about this whole FastCGI thing (that I hadn''t even thought
of since 1999 when looking at OpenMarket for a customer and even then it
was "old"), and wondering when we might see projects/products that
attempt to provide Ruby application services in a J2EE-like container.
I see the Cerise project - any interesting information on that?
I''m assuming

Charts and Java servers
Hi,
As a long time Java/J2EE exponent I wanted to give Rails a fair crack of the
whip and after we evaluated it for several weeks I have to say I like it.
The installation process for the base system/framework is straightforward on
the two platforms we''ve tried (Windows and Mac OS X). However, the charting
components available, relying on ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick seem less
clear

Frustrated with RoR environment splintering
Why isnt the RoR community focusing on robust and scalable mod_perl style of
Apache environment, rather then splintering all over the place with
lighthttp, mongrel, WEBrick, SCGI, fcgi, etc???
Its frustrating as someone who is trying to migrate to RoR.
Its very unlikely I would ever get a contract to work on any webserver
except Apache, so it would seem logicaly to focus all our efforts to

Resin and RAILS
Anybody use Resin''s (http://www.caucho.com) FastCGI support with Rails?
I''m seeing performance very close (almost the same) to what I''m seeing
with Lighttpd. Nothing scientific but just a quick test using Apache''s
wb and JMeter. (Might be interesting to other Java/Rails folk or
Java/PHP/Rails folk. I have no connection to Caucho and the tests were

Linux Suggestions
I''m fairly new to Ruby & Rails and I come from a stricly M$ background. I''m
trying to move into the world of open source, but I don''t have a good roadmap.
I''m starting to develop a Rails-based product and I want to have the option to
distribute it to non-hosted customers. So I''ve said all that to say this... I
want to learn how to setup linux and

Can someone please explain Lighttpd + Mongrel + Rails.
I know that Mongrel is a web server that hosts rails applications. But
i don''t understand what part Lighttpd (or Apache) has in the setup. I
know that you can use Mongrel on its own. What does Lighttpd improve
on?
Thanks,
Chris

Rails on straight CGI - doable?
I''m planning on dipping my toe into the rails ocean after having
lurked here for a bit. From what I gather, rails *WILL* work on a
straight CGI based server setup, it''s just slow, right?
Since this is going to be for my own enlightenment, I just need to
confirm(/deny) it''ll work at all right now; I''ll work on the "fast"
later.

which webserver to use in production?
Apologies in advance if this ignites a war of comflicting opinions....
I''m a few days away from going live with my first RoR application. It
is completely database centric and each user will have his own queries
so cacheing will not really help.
I have a dedicated linux server being built by my hosting provider and I
need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL

Apache 1.3 + remote FastCGI balancing
Cheers,
As I have a lot of stability problems with Lighttpd + FastCGI-Cluster I
wanted to test Apache 1.3 as most of the "big" sites like 43people or
BaseCamp run on it.
Every example I find only talks about lokal FastCGI processes and not
about remote ones and explains how the requests are balanced.
Are there any good examples out there and can Apache1.3/mod_fastcgi load
balance

We're sorry, but something went wrong on Tomcat
I am using JRuby and I have to deploy on Tomcat. My web app is working
fine in the dev envirmonment, with Mongel, but when I deploy on Tomcat
I get "We''re sorry, but something went wrong on Tomcat".
The problem is that production.log only shows:
# Logfile created on Mon Oct 12 12:54:36 +0100 2009-bash-3.00
The file permission and directory are 777.
Any idea how I can

Struggling with javac
I've installed jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586.rpm and Tomcat.
Working through some initial test install programs, I am finding that I
can't seem to compile .java files into classes.
For instance...
javac -classpath /usr/local/tomcat/common/lib/servlet.jar HelloWorld.java
as instructed fails with a
gij: unrecognized option -- `-classpath'
Try `gij --help' for more information.

lighttpd/fastcgi - where does stdout go?
i''m using lighty and fastcgi in my rails production environment.
standard output appears to get swallowed up somewhere... it''s clearly
not coming out of the development log. don''t know where to look for
it.
is this a byproduct of running in production mode? is there a way to
turn this off?

SSL [X.509] Authentication in Rails?
Been doing some research but haven''t been able to determine much - has
anyone had any experience parsing incoming [on the request] x.509
certificates? Specifically, getting name, CA, etc. Here''s how you do in
Java Servlets for reference:
X509Certificate[] certs = (X509Certificate[])
request.getAttribute("javax.servlet.request.X509Certificate");
Thanks.

Using R from Java
Hello,
I am interesting in using R from a web application, for basic statistics and
plots. The server is Java-based (tomcat).
The simplest solution is a system call that generates the text or the image,
then the servlet forwards the output. This can be done from any language,
but it is quite inelegant and slow for the initialization time.
Is there any package or approach for accessing R from a

Java Examples
Where should I look for an example of how to connect to Icecast from Java?
(I have a MySQL/Tomcat application with MP3's in the DB and need to stream
them using Java and Icecast.)
Thanks,
