R: Error in plot.new() : axis style "d" not implemented
Hi there!
Both on windows and Solaris platforms I run into troubles when trying to
draw two plots on top of each other. Here a short code example:
> x1 <- c(2,3,4,5,6,7,8)
> y1 <- sin(x1)
> x2 <- c(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
> y2 <- cos(x2)

highlight overlapping region of two densities
Hi all.
I would like to highlight overlapping regions of two densities and I could
not find a way to do it.
Here is the sample code:

Fitting distributions
Are there any functions in R for fitting distributions? In particular, I
would like to fit the weibull and extreme-value distributions when:
i) the data are given and the maximum likelihood estimates are required;
ii) the sample moments are available but the complete data record is not
(so moment estimates are required).
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

OT: compare several graphs
Hi all,
this is OT, but maybe someone can give me a clue. I've got data from eye

Package installation
Hi all,
I'm very new to R.
I have installed R 1.9.0 on Linux (Fedora).
Now I got an self-made package comprising R functions as well as C-Code
which are used in several R functions.
I installed the package without any error (see install log below).
Then, I checked in /usr/lib/R/library if the package izbi exists and it
exists.
But whenever I try to load the library on the command line I

comparison of bivariate normal distributions

I apologize for this often/old question. I found some hints but couldn't
solve the problem so far.
I have C functions (incl. the header files) as well as the R wrapper
functions which I want to use for faster calculations. These functions

Problem with FAME

I wonder whether anyone has an experience with FAME package written by Jeff Hallman. All my attempts to send him the following problem report did not succeed (the mail system says that my e-mail could not be delivered), so I turn for help to this list.

Quicken 2009 (german) and wine 1.1.25

I'm a Wine newbie who tried to get Quicken 2009 (german) installed on a openSUSE 11.1 box.
This is what I did according to the guy who succeeded in getting it up and running:
1) Start with a fresh Wine Profile

Concave hull
Dear friends,
Do you know how to calculate the CONCAVE hull of a set of points (2-
dimensional or n-dimensional)? is that possible in R? (With a "smoothing"
parameter of course).

Add a string to each string of an array
Dear all,
I have an array of strings
a <- c("2008q3","2005q1","2004q3")
I would like to add to each a[i], with i = 1,2,3
the following string "IMT",
such that in the end I could get
b <- c("IMT2008q3","IMT2005q1","IMT2004q3")
Is it possible to accomplish this without a loop command?

one way to solve bad looking density plots in postscript
Hi,
When R generates density plots and these are exported to postscript(
a=matrix(1:100,10,10);image(a,col=rainbow(100);dev.copy2eps(file="image.eps")
)
The result often looks bad when rendered on screen. The help page states that this is because programs use anti-aliasing. That seems to be true - turning off anti-aliasing for gs (-dGraphicsAlphaBits=1) of in OSX's preview makes

the current implementation of hist.default() calculates 'density' (and
'intensities') as
dens <- counts/(n*h)
where h has been calculated before as
h <- diff(fuzzybreaks)
which results in 'fuzzy' values for the density, see e.g.

Lattice and horizontally stacked density plots

I am try to make a density plot where plots are stacked like the one

sorting a data.frame using a vector

I'm looking for an efficient solution (speed and memory) for the
following problem:
Given
- a data.frame x containing numbers of type double
with nrow(x)>ncol(x) and unique row lables and
- a character vector y containing a sorted order labels
Now, I'd like to sort the rows of the data.frame x w.r.t. the order of
labels in y.

density of hist(freq = FALSE) inversely affected by data magnitude

text plots?
Is there a way to do text plots in R?
I'd like to do some simple XY plots in R with the output in text
(ascii). For example, with gnuplot I can do the following:
echo 'set terminal dumb ; plot sin(x)' | gnuplot
To generate a simple sin wave. Since I connect to a remote Linux
machine using SSH, being able to generate a rough idea of what a plot
will look like in text would be

Beginners Question: Make nlm work

I'm new to this and am trying to teach myself some R by plotting
biological data. The growth curve in question is supposed to be fitted
to the Verhulst equation, which may be transcribed as follows:
