Apple iPod
If you haven't seen, Apple has just announced a portable mp3 player (iPod) (www.apple.com). Can't find anything with a cursory search at Apple's Development Center (developer.apple.com), but I wonder if it can be upgraded to support Vorbis...and what it would take. Prelimenary thoughts? I know this is a topic that comes up over and over again on this list, but with Apple suddenly

libao and OS X
I tried sending this once, but it appears my school is having mail server issues. I've been playing with libao on OS X; I wanted to check out the macosx plugin for it, see if I could bend it to my will. Given some utilities from the fink project (automake comes to mind) I was able to compile it just fine. But, there was a problem. It cannot load dynamic plugins! The first reason I found

libao on OS X
OK, wanted to check out the macosx driver for libao on me new iBook. Everything compiles beautifully (given some utils from the fink project, like automake), but... but the dynamic plugin system is broken. 1) on OS X, dll's en in .dylib, not .so, as is hardwired in. this should be an easy fix. 2) dlopen chokes on opening the .dylib files...so the plugin is never loaded. i know not enought

Mail archive search is now up
There's now a list search on the xiph.org website for the vorbis and vorbis-dev mailing lists. The search can be found on each list's master monthly index (eg, http://www.xiph.org/archives/vorbis/masterindex.html) It's a Perl CGI on an underpowered box, so no bitching about speed :-) Monty --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage:

Request for support: add Vorbis to RioVolt CD player
I just recently got myself the SonicBlue RioVolt Mp3/WMA CD player, which has upgradeable firmware. I've sent a request to: customersupport@diamondmm.com asking them to add support for Ogg Vorbis in the next release of their firmware, so that it will be able to read Ogg CDs and display its tags properly. It would be great if others could e-mail the same address and ask for the same

OT: DHCP address pool for specific MAC manufacturer
Dear CentOS, This is somewhat off-topic, but I do hope to implement this on a CentOS system, so here goes... I would like to be able to setup a dhcpd (or like) daemon to maintain two IP address pools. One for devices whose leading three octets of the client MAC address are specified and the other for all other clients. Both pools would be a defined range on a commmon /24 subnet. There a

Samba & LPRng: Printer Status in Windows
I know this question has been answered here a while back, but I have not been able to find the mailing with the posts on it. -----==========----- I have a redhat server that I am using as a file/print server for student use. I am using samba to help the users with Windows. The problem I have is that when using printing a user can submit a print job, and it prints fine, but cannot see the

High system load but low cpu usage
I'm trying to figure out what's causing an average system load of 3+ to 5+ on an Intel quad core. The server has with 2 KVM guests (assigned 1 core and 2 cores) that's lightly loaded (0.1~0.4) each. Both guest/host are running 64bit CentOS 5.6 Originally I suspected maybe it's i/o but on checking, there is very little i/o wait % as well. Plenty of free disk space available on all

so many arp caches why?
Hello, all. When I execute arp -a -n, there are lots of arp caches like below. Surely, I set netmask and Broadcast without problem and routing table also no problem. System is CentOS release 4.7 i386. I know how to delete the arp cache, but I don't know why .. # ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:D1:E7:91:CC inet addr:192.168.195.36

Package ismev, gpd.fit, and interpretation for statistics of extreme values
Dear All, I have a question about package "ismev", its function "gpd.fit", and interpretation of the results. I used the package ismev to do an extreme value analysis on a fire dataset. Two variables are used in the analysis. The focal variable is acreage burned per fire, ranging from 1 to 5000 acres per fire. In total, there are 69,980 observations. The date covers

Hardware advice please?
I am quite new to Linux and have moved (almost) from a windoze NT4 environment. My present configuration is running SuSE V 8.0 with KDE3.0.5 desktop on two machines, connecting with Samba to an NT4 PC, and an occasional laptop or other PC that connects locally to the network. After a deal of searching, researching, and seeking advice I have decided to use Shorewall as my firewall.
