difference between MASS::polr() and Design::lrm()

estimates but different st.errs when fitting proportional odds models,

using names with functions..
Dear all,
I have the following (rather) strange problem..
For some reasons, I finally work with a variable whose name includes an
R function, "a.log(z)", say. And that is a problem when I call it in a
formula, for instance:
> myname<-"a.log(z)"
> dd<-data.frame("a.log(z)"=1:10,y=rnorm(10))
> o<-lm(y~1,data=dd)

A function as argument of another function
Dear all,
I would like to write a function like:
myfun<-function(x,fn) {xx<-exp(x); x*fn(xx)}
where fn is a symbolic description of any function with its argument to be
specified. Therefore
myfun(5,"2+0.3*y^2")
should return 5*(2+0.3*exp(5)^2),
myfun(5,"log(y)") should return 5*log(exp(5)) and so on.
I tried with "expression" and others, but without success.

question about deparse(substitute(...))
Dear R helpers:
I like to apply deparse(substitute()) on multiple arguments to collect the
names of the arguments into a character vector.
I used function test.fun as below. it works when there is only one input
argument. but it does not work for multiple arguements. can someone kindly
help?
test.fun <- function(...){deparse(substitute(...))}
test.fun(x) #this works
test.fun(x,y,z) # I like

deparse, substitute and S4 generics
Hello everyone,
I encountered the following confusing behavior of 'deparse' and
'substitute' while programming with S4 classes (see example below). It
seems like the presence of '...' argument in the definition of the
generic generates the problem. I have no clue why, can anyone explain
that to me? Are there any "workarounds"?

Hi,
I'm writing a function that needs the input names (as characterstrings) as part of the output.
With deparse(substitute( ) ) that works fine, until I replace all zeros with 0.001 (log is calculated at some time):
tf <- function(input) { input[input==0] <- 0.001 ; deparse(substitute(input)) }
myguess <- 42
tf(myguess) # not "myguess", but "42"

deparse(substitute(foo))
I see that plot.default uses deparse(substitute(x)) to extract the
character name of an argument and put it on the vertical axis.
Hence:
foo <- 1:10
plot( foo )
will put the label "foo" on the vertical axis.
However, for a function that takes a "..." list as an input, I can only
extract the first argument name:
x <- 1:10
y <- 10:20
foo <- function(...) {

deparse(substitute(x)) fails in implied call to an S3 print method
In an implied call to an S3 print method, deparse(substitute(x)) returns
"x", regardless of the name of object in .GlobalEnv, as indicated in the

I am writing a function in which I need to affect a variable on a higher
level. My fnction could be:

Issue when calling deparse(substitute(x)) from C with "anonymous" R vectors ?
Dear list,
When calling R from C, what appears like a spurious error can be
triggered during the execution of chisq.test(x, y).
This is happening when the following conditions are met:
- x and y are "anonymous" C-level R vectors (they do not have a symbol),
but they are protected from garbage collection
- x and y are "not too small" (it was experienced as soon as they are

deparse(substitute(x)) on an object with S3 class
Dear list,
can someone explain to me why deparse(substitute(x)) does not seem to work
when x is of a user-defined S3 class?
In my actual problem, my print method is part of a package, and the method
is registered in the NAMESPACE, if that should make a difference.

In R code, "deparse(substitute(arg))" is the usual way to construct a
label for an argument. Is there an equivalent to this in C code
working on an SEXP, inside a function called by .Internal()?

Peak Over Threshold values
Dear List
I hope you can help me: I?ve got a dataframe (df) within which I am looking
for Peak Over Threshold values as well as the length of the events. An event
starts when walevel equals 5.8 and it should end when walevel equals the
lower threshold value (5.35).
I tried ?clusters (?)? from ?evd package?, and varied r (see example) but it
did not work for all events (again

When I use all.vars(), I am interest in extracting only the variable names..
Here a simple example
all.vars(as.formula(y~poly(x,k)+z))
returns
[1] "y" "x" "k" "z"
and I would like to obtain
"y" "x" "z"
Where is the trick?

about the "mini-distribution" (R for Win )

I've just downloaded the miniR.exe, miniR-1.bin,....,miniR-8.bin in order to
update R to 1.6.2 (I cannot download the file of 19Mb !). The installation
seems to have worked fine, but I can't find in the /bin dir several files
that were, for instance, in the /bin directory in the version 1.5.1

Question about substitute (and eval, parse and deparse)

partial matching with grep()
dear all,
This is a probably a silly question.
If I type
> grep("x",c("a.x" ,"b.x","a.xx"),value=TRUE)
[1] "a.x" "b.x" "a.xx"
Instead, I would like to obtain only
"a.x" "b.x"
How is it possible to get this result with grep()?
