Help understanding EVERYTHING
Team,
I am trying to learn a GUI for Ruby and I picked wxRuby.
The problem is that I am kind of slow learning this and I now feel
frustrated after trying for about at least 7 hours.
I am trying to design a simple Sudoku 9x9 grid to display numbers, 1 - 9,
using buttons.
I posted a question on Ruby forum ruby-talk and a gentleman, Alex Fenton,
answered my questions.
Alex gave me what appear to be

Overlaying a moving average curve on top of a barplot
I''m using standard barplot (Windows version 1.6.2 of R) to represent a certain weekly metric "v" and I would like to properly overlay on top of it its moving average "mean.8" (window of 8 weeks). I must be doing something wrong since the moving average (using "lines") doesn''t overlay properly, i.e., both x-scales do not match!

legend in R plot
Hi all,
I am have some difficulty with the legend function.
I need to add a legend to describe the different line types in a plot. The
legend box is small.
It did not include sufficient length of each line type to help distinguish
the differnt line types.
Is there a way to fix this.
Thank you

Customised legend in lattice
Hi List,
Am trying to customize a legend in trellis: Draws 2x5 lines in 5 colors and
2 linetypes. I would like to add two more items to the legend showing the
key for the line types above the colored legend.
Any suggestions welcome - thanks Herry

Grid newbie: aligning & scaling viewports
Oh Knowledgeable Ones:
I'm working on a project using grid graphics (for the first time). A toy
example is given below, run it simply with >foobar() I am wondering why the
pink dot and concentric circles are not centered on the 3-color axis system.
Further, I feel like the concentric circles don't have the intended radius -
if my math is right, the outmost circle should touch the

grid package and lines
Hello list,
When using the grid package in R 1.60 under windows grid.lines and
grid.line.to seem not to use the coordinate system as defined by the current
viewport whereas grin.points does. Am I doing something wrong?

Making use of names of viewports (grid)
The following code, though not brilliant, works on an A4 page. It
might look odd on other devices of a very different size.

vps <- grid.layout(nrow = 3, ncol = 4,
widths = unit(rep(1, 4), rep("null", 4)),

Plot using different symbols depending on value.
I am making a plot from R indicating an average, min and max value for a
number of sample types. as horizontal lines with the sample types on the
y-axis. (see http://home.newmedia.no/sickel/R.html for the plot and code) In
some cases, the min value is the detection limit, and I would like to
indicate that bu using a <, rather than the usual | I use for indicating the
value.

matrix operations on grobs and grid units
Dear list,
As a minimal test of a more complex grid layout, I'm trying to find a
clean and efficient way to arrange text grobs in a rectangular layout.
The labels may be expressions, or text with a fontsize different of
the default, which means that the cell sizes should probably be
calculated using grobWidth() and grobHeight() as opposed to simpler
stringWidth() and stringHeight().

gradient fill of a grid.polygon
Dear list,
Following a recent enquiry, I've been playing with the idea of creating a
colour gradient for a polygon, using the Grid package. The idea is to draw a
number of stripes of different colours, using the grid.clip function. Below
is my current attempt at this,
library(grid)
rotate.polygon <- function(g, angle=0){ # utility function, works fine
matR <- matrix(c(cos(angle),

Viewport and grid.draw
Hi Deepayan and everyone,
I need to add a common legend to a group of latice
graphs, I have tried different ways using viewport and
grid.draw without success.
Here is what I have:
plot.new()
library(grid)
library('IDPmisc')
print(plot1, split=c(1,1,2,4), more=TRUE)
print(plot4, split=c(2,1,2,4), more=TRUE)
print(plot2, split=c(1,2,2,4), more=TRUE)
print(plot5, split=c(2,2,2,4),

Error in calcCurveGrob(x, x$debug) : End points must not be identical
Hi All... I haven?t found mention of this error anywhere. I'm trying to
draw spline curves using grid graphics. Most of the time, I have no
problems, but I have some data sets that give the error in the subject line.
I'm not sure which end points are identical, but the end points passed to
the function are definitely not identical.
Any assistance appreciated! Bryan

grid graphics gpar(fill) argument and jpeg device
Hi everybody,
I just notice a strange behaviour of gpar's fill argument when using
non-postscript devices:
The default of the argument is transparent (according to get.gpar("fill")).
So as expected, the following code draws a nice red rectangle in the
middle of my X11 or postscript device.
pushViewport(viewport(width=0.5, height=0.5))
grid.rect(gp=gpar(fill="red"))

Cross-tabulation of data from database
I am quite new to R, so please bear over with me if I have problems with the
R terminology.
I want to (try to) use R for some analyses within vegetation ecology, using
the vegan package. I have my data in a postgresql database, and I manage to
get them into R as a dataframe with columns for respectively: Name of the
analysed m2, Name of the species, coverage of species in the square in %. I

Trouble with gridBase and inset plots
Dear All,
I ma having a trouble in generating a figure containing 3 insets with
the gridBase package.
I always get an error message of the kind:
Error in gridPLT() : Figure region too small and/or viewport too large
No matter which parameters I choose. The plots works nicely with two
insets only, but when I try adding the third one, my troubles begin.
I am probably doing something wrong in the

plot.new() and grid functions in multipage pdfs
Hi,
when using the grid package, I've come across this weird behaviour
where a call to plot.new() will start a new page for a multi-page pdf,
but then the margins will somehow behave strangely for all but the
first page: here is some code:
pdf("test.pdf"); plot.new(); grid.rect(gp = gpar(fill="blue"));
plot.new(); grid.rect(gp = gpar(fill="blue")); dev.off()

Graphic parameters with length zero in grid cause R to crash
Hi,
I found in grid package, if the graphic parameters have zero length, R crashes. In the
following code, I only tested `grid.rect()` and the `fill` parameter, but I think it should
be similar as other grid graphic functions.
In `gpar()` function, the graphic parameters are not allowed to have zero length, but
we can make them with zero length by first generating a `gpar` object and then
