R and C++ compared with only C++
My computer is a pentium 4 running at 2.4 GHz. My R is 1.7.1 I have written a program in R that calls C++. The program spends most of the time in C++ ( > 90% ). R basically deals with output and input. How slower can this be compared with the program I would get from rewriting everything in C++? Thank you.

a bug?
I am having problems to use the command curve with a function of the form min ( f ( x ), g ( x )) If I try with the function myFunction <- function ( x ) if ( f ( x ) > g ( x )) f ( x ) else g ( x ) I also have problems. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send

Nealder Meade and nlm
Hello, I have been using R to fit my data using non-linear least squares. I have used the optimize routine to minimize the sum of squared errors (using Nealder Meade optimization routine), but couldn't get the non-linear model in R to converge to the estimates acheived in a convergent Neadler Meade routine. It tells me about problems with the gradient. I was wondering if there is any way

gif, jpeg and png image files reader
Hi all, Although R seems to have jpeg() and png() functions that converts data into jpeg and png formated files, it doesn't have functions the other way around. Does one of R contributed packages have gif, jpeg and png image readers? I did help.search() but no luck Regards, Jonathan -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read

weird behaviour when calling c++
I am using 1.7.1 in a PC ( redhat 9, linux ) I created a subroutine in C++, mySubrutine, to be used in R. To debug this subroutine I have a main routine in C++ that calls mySubrutine. The only thing main () does is to provide mySubrutine with its arguments (this is the easiest way for me to debug subroutines written in C++ and intended to be used in R ). I also have a version of the same

integrate function
After finding an error in R's integrate function, I spent some time testing various alternative numerical integration routines I took from the Numerical Recipes book by Press et al. Here is a brief summary of what I found. As near as I can tell, no method for numerical integration is foolproof. I believe that no matter the method, functions could be invented to defeat it. In particular,

Bug in boxplot(..., add=TRUE) ?
R 1.6.1 on Windows NT4: The boxplot() function appears to draw its own tick marks and axis values even when called with add=TRUE. As a toy example, try x <- rnorm(100) f <- factor(rep(1:4, each=25)) plot(c(0,4), c(-3,3), type="n", xaxt="n", yaxt="n") boxplot(x ~ f, add=TRUE) My expectation is that a high-level plotting function will not mess with the axes

Writing packages with `methods' package
I'm trying to write a package which uses classes/methods as defined in the `methods' package. I have a single .R file which defines the class and various methods for that class. Is there a function for finding local extrema.
I have a vector with about 100.000 values representing a quite regular function (sinusoid like). I would like to find all local maxima of this function (should be about 4000). geoR question from new R user
Hi, I'm a new R user. My goal is to do a variogram using geoR. I started by trying to do the example in the geoR Illustrative Session using my own data. I am able to read in my Ascii data using: D <- matrix(scan("file.dat", n=530*3), 530,3, byrow=TRUE). Then I use: as.geodata(D, coords.col=1:2, data.col=3) to make the object D geodata. I check the descriptive statistics,

cdf of the standard normal distribution
Dear Experts, I need to calculate the cdf of the standard normal distribution, i.e. H(x) = 1/sqrt(2*pi) integral(exp(-z^2/2) dz), where z is b/w -infi to infi. I know there should be a way to do it in R, but did not know to do it. I'd appreciate any help you could offer. Charlie Liu Graduate student intern at EPA/ECO
