problem formatting data frames
Dear R-guRus: I have a problem with the format of my data in R. Let's say I have a HUGE text table which consists of columns of numerical data, separated by tabs, but in some places rows of text (error messages, etc) are inserted in between rows of numerical data. Because the data file is so huge and because I have thousands of these files, it's unpractical to try and go thru these

Help with concatenation and arrays
Dear R-guRus: I have 2 questions 1) I have 2 variables, e.g. x<-5; y<-"Char" How do I create a new variable which would have both these values in a string (e.g. "5Char", or "5 Char", etc ) ?? 2) if i have an array x[1:100], and I do x[x==345.123], how do I get position j in the array of those x[j] which are equal to 345.123 ? Thank you very much, Vlad.

Separating columns, and sorting by rows
Dear anyone who knows more about R than me (so everyone). I have been bashing my head on the keyboard all day trying to do something with my table. I have some data, like so: yyyy-mm Rainfall(mm) 1 1977-02 17.4 2 1977-03 34.0 3 1977-04 26.2 4 1977-05 42.6 5 1977-06 58.6 6 1977-07 23.2 7 1977-08 26.8 8 1977-09 48.4 9

model.matrix memory problem (PR#13838)
Hi, `model.matrix' might kill R with a segfault (on a illposed problem, but anyway): mydf <- as.data.frame(sapply(1:40, function(i) gl(2, 100))) f <- as.formula(paste("~ - 1 + ", paste(names(mydf), collapse = ":"), sep = "")) X <- model.matrix(f, data = mydf) *** caught segfault *** address 0x18, cause 'memory not mapped' Segmentation fault

Merge data frames but with a twist.
Dear all, Question: How to merge two data frames such that new column are added in a particular way? I'm not actually sure how to best articulate my question to be honest, so i hope showing you what I want to achieve will communicate my question better. Lets say I have two data frames: > DF1 <- data.frame(cbind(Show=c('Firefly', 'Red Dwarf'), Measure=1:2,

Contingency tables from data.frames
Dear list, I'm trying to do a set of generic functions do make contingency tables from data.frames. It is just running "nice" (I'm learning R), but I think it can be better. I would like to filter the data.frame, i.e, eliminate all not numeric variables. And I don't know how to make it: please, help me. Below one of the my functions ('er' is a mention to EasieR,

sort data.frame by specific date column
I have a data.frame that was built from a number of smaller data.frames with rbind. Each ssmaller data.frame bound together runs over the same date ranges. The format of the whole thing looks like this: Trade PosType EnDate EnTime ExDate ExTime PL_Pos 1 1 1 1040107 915 1040107 1300 164 2 2 1 1040108 909 1040108 1300 184 3 3 1 1040115

loop through and modify multiple data frames
Hi Newbie question: I have a set of data frames that I want to do the same calculations on each. I've found out that I can put them in a list and loop through the list to do the calculation, but not put the results back into each data.frame.. For example three data frames cats, dogs, birds where >cats name eats_kg 1 bob 3 2 garfield 4 3 chuck 6 and dogs and birds are similar but not

Dealing with NaN's in data frames
I am looking for the most efficient way to replace all occurrences of NaN in a data frame with NA. I can do this with a double loop, but it seems that there should be a higher level and more efficient way. With is.na, I could use ifelse, but if.nan seems not to have similar capabilities. Strange "username map" behaviour with "security=user"
I use Samba 2.2.0 on small network. I use "security = user" and "username map" to map some Win-users to unix users. I have simple testing file with username mapping: root = vlad It is supposed that when I connect to samba as user "Vlad" with vlad's password I get the root's rigths to shares. Right? But when I try to connect to samba as "vlad"

a little statistics help
Dear R-guRus: I am stuck with the following problem in R: Let's say i have a data.frame with columns X,Y & Z. X is a column of numbers, Y is a column of N factors "A", "B", "C", "D", etc and Z is a column of n factors "a", "b", "c", etc if i do MyLm<-lm(X~Y*Z - 1) i get all N coefficients for Y-factors, but only

Hi, I see you all agree to apply :) Stephen, repost of this patch to proper places below. Thank you Henrik for clarification of bridge standard. However, silent drop of locally generated packets on 99% idle carrier grade machine looks like a hardware problem. David, don't you think that having software packet drop counters is a bad idea? I thought, software drop counters are there to help
