readline editor
Dear all,
I have a problem with the readline editor of R since it doesn't work.
Setting ./configure --with-readline does not the fix the problem.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? Many thanks in advance!

How to remove similar successive objects from a vector?
Is there some (much) more efficient way to do this?
VECTOR=c(3,2,4,5,5,3,3,5,1,6,6);
NEWVECTOR=VECTOR[1];
for(i in 1:(length(VECTOR)-1))
{
if((identical(VECTOR[i], VECTOR[i+1]))==FALSE){
NEWVECTOR=c(NEWVECTOR,VECTOR[i+1])}
}
> VECTOR
[1] 3 2 4 5 5 3 3 5 1 6 6
> NEWVECTOR

x11 is not available
Dear list,
I have problems installing R-2.0.1 on SUSE Linux 9.2. I used the
following commands in order install R in
/usr/local
./configure --with x11 --with-readline
make
make install
When starting R and trying to display a plot on the X-window system
output is written to a postscript file. When I try to run x11 with

How can I remove columns with NaN entries ?
Here is my simple example:

groupedData
Dear all,
I tried to create a groupedData object, where the grouping factor
is not ordered.
Here ist the code:
library(nlme)
test<-groupedData(conc~Time|Subject,order.groups=F,data=as.data.frame(Theoph))
> getGroups(test)
Levels: 6 < 7 < 8 < 11 < 3 < 2 < 4 < 9 < 12 < 10 < 1 < 5
I still get an ordered factor. As always thanks for your help

hazard estimate
Dear list,
is there a function available which provides an estimate of the hazard
function
based on a cox proportional hazard model? I only found the cumulative
hazard and the survival function as survfit options.

gnls from library nlme
Dear all,
I am trying to gain some experience with the function gnls from the nlme
package.
I tried to model the Theophyline data by trying to model the presumed
dependency of
the clearance on the body weight.
This is my function call of gnls:
gnls(conc~SSfol(Dose,Time,lKe,lKa,lCl),data=Theoph,
params=list(lKe~1,lKa~1,lCl~Wt),start=c(-2.4,0.46,-3.22,0.01))
That's been the result:

tapply and empty subsets
I am using tapply to compute means by group, as in
> tapply(y, z, mean)
1 2 3
21.00757 20.50031 NA
where y is a vector and z a factor with levels 1:3.
I would like to get a zero instead of the NA I get when a subset is
empty. The problem is that FUN is not applied to empty cells of the
ragged array. (Of course I am willing to define a function my.mean
that returns

non-interactive call to R (running an R package as a stand-alone application)
Is there a way I can have R automatically execute the commands in a source file without ever having to use R interactively? If so, what arguments should I pass to the UNIX call to R? I need to do this to run several R jobs in parallel.
An alternative may be to have R and an R package behave as a stand-alone application that can be called from the UNIX command line. Is there any documentation on

Improving efficiency in "outer"-like calculation
Hello,
I am doing mcmc=10000 simulations from a posterior distribution of the parameters
of a mixture of K=6 normal densities.
I have mcmc by K matrices simMeans, simVars and simWeights containing
the simulation output: one row for each simulation, one column for
each normal component of the mixture.
One thing I would like to do is a plot of the posterior predictive
density. In order to do that

Two math expressions in plot
Hello!
I am trying to put two math expressions in the title of a plot. As
you can see below, I can place correctly one expression at a time, but
not both. Ideally I would like to have them separated by a comma. Any
suggestions?

Markov chain transition model, data replication project
Hello all,
I am currently attempting to replicate data from a political science article
that utilized a Markov chain transition model to predict voter turnout
intention at time *t*; the data was separated into two different models
based on whether prior intent was to vote or not to vote. The details don't
really matter.
Mostly I am curious how to run a Markov chain transition model in R,

quantile function
I am trying to `cut' a continuous variable into contiguous classes
containing approximately an equal number of observations. I thought
quantile() was the appropriate function to use in order to find the
breakpoints, but I end up with classes of different sizes - see
example below. Does anybody have an explanation for that? And what is
the `recommended' way of computing what I am looking
