Storing order of sortable objects in RoR
I have two sortable lists that you can drag and drop to and from. Each
object in the lists have a position field in the object''s table. I
want to be able to update the position in the database automagically
once a user has sorted the list.
I can drag and drop just fine but I am not able to store the new
positions in the database.
I am trying to use Ajax.request in the onUpdate callback

Diagnosing trouble with R-2.0, Fedora Core 2, and Rcmdf
Greetings, R-help!
On 2 Fedora Core 2 Linux systems, i've completely erased the previous R
and all packages and then installed R-2.0 and installed fresh packages.
In using Rcmdr, I see some trouble and I wonder if other people see this
and if it is due to the tcl/tk, or R, or Rcmdr. (If readers have not
yet tried Rcmdr, I recommend it not just because of the GUI it provides,

Using Scalar Evolution to Identify Expressions Evolving in terms of Loop induction variables
Hi,
I am using Scalar Evolution to extract access expressions (for load and store instructions) in terms of the loop induction variables.
I observe that the Scalar Evolution analysis is returning more expressions than I expect - including ones that are not defined
in terms of the loop induction variable. For instance in the following code:
for(unsigned long int bid = 0; bid < no_of_queries;

ActionView::Base.field_error_proc not getting an error field
In my User form I have standard field to get user record attributes

I also have a select drop_down to choose a role from an array
first_name, last_name and email are user record attributes, but I
defined the role name as a virtual attribute

Write/Display AR query as Grouped Results?
I''ve got a publications table that contains an author_id foreign key and
a pubrole_id foreign key. What I want to do is query the DB using AR so
that I can get a list of all publications that belong_to a particular
author, and group the results by the pubrole.role_name (Author, Joint
Author, Editor, etc.) so that the results look something like:
Author
book1 info
book2 info
etc.

has_many :through and scopes: how to mutate the set of associated objects?
I have a model layer containing Movie, Person, Role, and RoleType,
making it possible to express facts such as "Clint Easterbunny is
director of the movie Gran Milano".
The relevant model and associations look like this
class Movie < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :roles, :include => :role_type, :dependent => :destroy
has_many :participants, :through => :roles, :source

find_with_ferret and HABTM assocs
Could you be more specific about what is not working?
-- Are your association methods between Role and User being set up
correctly? (If not, make sure your statement is
"has_and_belongs_to_many", and not "hasandbelongstomany".)
-- Are you storing the data for role_name in the index? If so, can
you see it there?
I''m not familiar with the find_with_ferret

Using Scalar Evolution to Identify Expressions Evolving in terms of Loop induction variables
Hi Hashim,
Scalar evolution determines evolution of scalar in terms of expression
chain driving it.
Try dumping the detailed log using opt -analyze -scalar-evolution <.ll> -S
, and look for LoopDispositions
corresponding to different expression which shows variance characteristics
of a particular expression w.r.t
loop i.e. [computable/variant/invariant].
Thanks

HABTM join table quirk
I''ve been bringing up a good basica framework for applications at work.
To give decent security I''ve been implementing the Rails Recipie for
Authorization of function calls modeled on the book''s implementation.
(Changes for our environment were added..but are minor.)
Since I initially let Rails create the join table between two data
tables with a HABTM relationship....I

before_filter with multiple roles
I have multiple roles in my application.
Now I want to block a method for all users except the administrator and
a manager.
When I do this:
before_filter (:check_administrator_role), :only => [:administration]
before_filter (:check_taskmanager_role), :only => [:administration]
The user must have both roles. How can I change that to an "OR"
combination?

Login form_tag with select_tag option
Hi all,
In the application i develop, a sophisticated login system is required.
Being a newbie in Ruby, i''m not comfortable with the select tag in the
form tag.
My requirement:
2 tables - User(LoginName, Password, RoleId...) and Role(RoleId,
RoleName...)
View - RoleNames to be loaded in the drop down box and On submit, RoleId
to be passed to controller for authentication.

routes and link_to
Hi,
I have defined this route as the first one:
map.connect '':controller_prefixx/:controller/:action'',
:controller_prefixx => ''rails_right''
(for the test, I put a second x at the end to be sure I don''t collide
from the :controller_prefix used in rails).
In my view, I have this:
<% @rights.each do |right| %>

Connecting a row of an unknown table to another row of an unknown table
Hello all,
I''m currently designing a web app in Rails that lets me keep a directory
of free/opensource computer games. Each game has attributes like name,
website, review, etc., but each game can also be associated with a set
of genres and gameplay elements. The main three tables I''m working with
are "games", "genres", "elements",

Problems with multiple ''id'' columns in a join_table
I have a problem declaring a relationship through a join_table ; the SQL
generated by ActiveRecord is correct, but there are two columns called
''id'', and the final object gets the ''wrong'' column ...

There''s a People table, with id, name, and a few things.

Bug with Postgres and/or HABTM?
Hello list,
I think I''ve found a bug in the way Rails is talking to my Postgres DB
when recording HABTM data.
My join_table looks like this:
id serial primary key,
tablea_id integer references tablea(id),
tableb_id integer references tableb(id),
other_attributes...
When Rails writes to join_table, I''d expect it to do something like:
INSERT INTO join_table (tablea_id,

slight security problem
Hey,
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
I''m using thin+puppetmasterd+nginx. If i add a host, sign it''s key,
run puppetd successfully on it all is good, as expected. If i then
revoke/clean the key on the master server, leave the box running,
startup another host set the hostname to be the same as the old,
generate new keys/have them signed. The original box is still

Re: DB Modelling the Rails way - solution by Chris Hall
Hi Chris,
Yesterday you kindly submitted an answer to my question on modelling
many to many relationships. I''ve briefly tried the proposed solution but
so far with no luck. Before I get too involved - I''d like to know if
mapping three way :join_tables is "legal" in a Rails sense. I only ask
since you put (untested) in your mail and I can''t find any docs on
