FW: Summary of Suggestions for poor man's parallel processing
It turns out that my web host doesn't allow direct links. Try going to
http://www.warnes.net/downloads or getting it from the sourceforge snippet
library https://sourceforge.net/snippet/detail.php?type=snippet&id=101149.

Suggestions for poor man's parallel processing
Almost all of the heavy crunching I do in R is like:
> for(i in long.list){
+ do.something(i)
+ }
> collect.results()
Since all the invocations of do.something are independent of one another, there
is no reason that I can't run them in parallel. Since my machine has four
processors, a natural way to do this is to divide up long.list into 4 pieces
and then start 4 jobs, each of which

build rpvm under cygwin
I tried ot build rpvm in my own makefile.
But runs into some linker errors like e.g.
undefined reference to `_R_alloc'
My enviornment looks like this:

pvm 3.4 compiled under cygwin myself
R installed from the rw2001.exe setup file.
I guess that the R under rw2001.exe was build with
some other compiler?
I then tried to compile R myself under CYGWIN but runs

Installing package rpvm under Windows
Hello,
I'm trying to install the rpvm package under Windows, but I am having
problems. I have pvm3.4 installed properly.
I've defined the system variables
PVM_ROOT = C:\PROGRA~1\pvm3.4\
PVM_ARCH = win32
When I try to install, I get this:
C:\R\Packages>Rcmd INSTALL rpvm_1.0.1.tar.gz

Status of Rmpi
Rmpi is not currently available on CRAN, and I don't think it has been
for a few months. It is available at
http://www.stats.uwo.ca/faculty/yu/Rmpi/
Does anyone know its current status?
A few months ago I corresponded with the author, who noted some build
problems (specifically on Debian) were the hang up, and seemed to be
working on it. I wasn't able to get it to work then (on a

Viable Approach to Parallel R?
All,
We are researching approaches to parallel R with the end goal of running
R in a distributed manner on a Linux cluster. We expect of course to do
some work decomposing our problems to be task-parallel or data-parallel,
but wouldn't mind getting an initial boost working with "embarrassingly
parallel" code sections and one of the approaches below.
Incidentally our environment

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machi nes
Caveat: I've only played with this a couple of years ago...
I believe you can just add each host _twice_ (or as many times as the number
of CPUs at that host) to get both CPUs to work.

rpvm arch check
I've trying to fix the check error in rpvm package. Right now on my Mac, I
use darwinport to install PVM and I can get rpvm to pass the check using 'R
-arch x86_64 CMD check'. However the default 'R CMD check' uses i386 which
fails since PVM is built for x86_64 only.
So is there a way to ensure proper architecture is used that matches that
of the external library like PVM?

R on a multi core unix box
Hi,
I installed the snow package on a unix box that has multiple cores. To be
able to exploit the multiple cores (on one pc) do I still need to install
the rmpi package (or rpvm). Another question, if i run a bayesian simulation
on the multiple core after setting them up correctly (using snow), would you
think there will be a noticeable speedup gain.
Thanks,
Saeed

Hi all,
I'm trying to get the snow package with mpi working on my linux ubuntu 10.04 machine. When I tried to install it (see below) it already had problems with the dependencies.

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machines
Hi,
does anybody know how to use the dual processors in the machines of a cluster? I am using R with rpvm and snow packages. I usually start pvm daemon and add host machines first, and then run R to start my computing work. But I find that only one processor in each machine is used in this way and the other one always stays idle. Is there any simple way to tell pvm to use the two processors at

SNOW: Simple Parallel Computing in R
The package `snow' (Simple Network of Workstations), originally
announced in early form about a year ago on this list, is now
available from CRAN. Snow implements a simple mechanism for using a
workstation cluster for ``embarrassingly parallel'' computations in R.
The interface, which is based in part on the Python CoW (Cluster of
Workstations; http://www.scipy.org/) package, is

Parallel processes
Dear R People:
I was wondering if there were any packages for parallel programming in R.
According to the R-help, at one time there was a package called SNOW. It doesn't seem
to exist anymore.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Erin Hodgess

Object finalization
I see some code in R to attach finalizers to external pointer references
(Register[C]Finalizer). Anyone have an example of how to code the
finalizer? R_RegisterCFinalizer accepts a C function, but I can't see
how to get it to operate on the pointer, since the pointer is not passed
to the function when its called. RegisterFinalizer takes an R closure,
but how is it called from R (tried

Problems in package management after Linux system upgrade
I upgraded from Fedora Core 4 to Fedora Core 5 and I find a lot of
previously installed packages won't run because shared libraries or
other system things have changed "out from under" the installed R
libraries. I do not know for sure if the R version now from
Fedora-Extras (2.2.1) is exactly the same one I was using in FC4.
I see problems in many packages. Example, Hmisc:

New version of pmg -- Poor Man's GUI
For those who are interested,
I've finished release of 0.4 of pmg and have placed it on my website
at http://www.math.csi.cuny.edu/Statistics/R/pmg.
The pmg package provides some GUI elements using the RGtk package and
friends: RGtk, OOP, RGtkExtra, RGtkHTML, RGdkPixbuf, RGtkViewers and
REventLoop from www.omegahat.org and gtkDevice from CRAN. (These
require a form of UNIX such as linux, OS

Poor-man's paging through multiple phones?
We're mostly Cisco CallManager with some SIP and Asterisk.
I want someone at one of our locations to be able to dial and number
and have Asterisk simultaneously dial several Call-Manager extensions
which are set to auto-answer and talk into the phone creating a sort
of paging system.
We have informacast, but it is too cumbersome for the users.
I know Asterisk can ring several phones at the

unexported symbols in libR.so of r-devel
Thanks to Matthias Burger, I came to know that in r-devel, a lot of symbols
are no longer exported in libR.so, which breaks the package rpvm since it
calls these functions in serialize.c.
R_InitInPStream
R_InitOutPStream
Since the change is fairly recent (earlier this month), I guess the core team
will be making further changes. In any case, please add these two to the
exported list.
Thanks,
