hairy indexing problem
I've got a data frame that looks like this:

cross-platform code: windows or gnu/linux?
I am writing some R code that generates some figures. I am primarily
developing on GNU/Linux, but will ultimately run the code on Windows
in order to get WMF files I can integrate in an existing document.
The win.metafile() function, of course, doesn't exist in the GNU/Linux
version of R. I am contemplating writing an abstraction layer that
runs the right thing, but I need to know how the

coercing "numeric" components of data frame to "factor" or "ordered"?
I am getting ready to load a bunch of data into R. The data is all
numeric, but some of the numbers are integer codes representing
non-numeric semantics. What is the best way to "fix" the data frames
so that these compenents are recognized as "factors" or "ordered", as
appropriate?
Can I "assign" to some attribute of the data frame component, like the

summary on predict with arima0
Here is the summary on predict when
using an arima0 object:
The arima0 object must be based on a time series vector.
That is;
x <- ts(xm1, frequency=12, start=c(1975,1))
x.ar <- arima0(x,order=c(1,1,1))
predict(x.ar,n.ahead=3)

"normal probability plot" with a percentile scale?
I'd like to generate some plots like you'd see on the old "normal
probability graph paper", like the first plot in:
<http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/eda/section3/normprpl.htm>
except the horizontal scale would have 1%, 5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 95%,
99%, or similar quantiles, with associated tick/grid lines. [still
hunting around for a good example...] something like

Spearman rank-order correlation matrix
I"ve got a data frame with a selection of columns I want to compute a
rank-order correlation matrix from without disturbing the original
data frame.
foo[,c("a","b","d","f","g")]
What I wanted to do, intuitively, was:
> cor(rank(foo[,c("a","b","d","f","g")]))
but rank in that context

qqnorm() with weighted data?
I've got a set of data that are weighted by a largish integer (ranging
from about 50K to 1.5 million). I'd like to plot CDF's for this data
taking into account the weighting. What do you recommend?
Thanks!

Is it possible to dump a series of plots directly into a powerpoint presentation (as is possible in Splus)?
Thank you,

Factor Analysis?
Hello.
I have been browsing the R- manual and not seen any direct
implementation of Factor analysis.
Is there anyone out there who has run Factor Analysis with R?
Thanks

building formula objects
I want to write a function to take an argument as the response
variable of a linear model, e.g. to do anova's across a list of
variables, something like the following (except, of course, this
doesn't work):
function(x) { anova(lm(x ~ my.factor,data=my.data)) }
The x in lm() above is getting evaluated at the wrong level. How
can I make this work?

formula parsing, using parts ...
I am writing a little abstraction for a series of tests. For example,
I am running an anova and kruskal.test on a one-factor model. That
isn't a particular problem, I have an interface like:
my.function <- function(model,data) {
print(deparse(substitute(data)))
a <- anova(lm(formula,data))
print(a)
if(a$"Pr(>F)"[1] < 0.05) {
pairwise.t.test(???)
}

PICT output?
hi, all. I use R on a unix (linux) box and am quite happy with it.
However, sometimes I need to create a graph that needs to be used with
Microsoft Word or Powerpoint (ug). I can create a png or jpeg format
picture, but the text look pretty crummy because jpeg is bitmapped. I
can also create a PS/EPS version (my preference), but then it doesn't
display properly in word or powerpoint (but it

Extract text from Microsoft PowerPoint files
Hello CentOS people,
I'm wondering if there are command tools like antiword and docx2txt for
Microsoft PowerPoint files (.ppt and .pptx). The idea is to extract
text from PowerPoint files. Sorry this isn't exactly about CentOS, but
I'd really like it if Yum has something. I tried xlhtml, but it hasn't
been updated in a while and isn't exactly wanting to work on CentOS

R integration with Microsoft Powerpoint
Please allow me an unusual question.
Is there any way that R can be closely integrated with a Microsoft
Powerpoint presentation? I would like to embed R calculations in
Powerpoint so that I will start Powerpoint, be prompted to enter some
parameters, and an R function will run and return values and graphs.
Thanks,
John

R Graphs in Powerpoint
I've tried several methods in OS X, and here's what works best for me. Save the R graphic as a PDF file. Open it with Apple's "Preview" application, and save it as a PNG file. The resulting .png file can be inserted into MS Word or PowerPoint, can be resized, and looks good on either OS X or Windows. There are other programs available for translating the pdf file to png

Powerpoint 2007 not advancing slides
Hi Everyone
Samba 3.6.7 on OpenSuse 12.2 x86_64
I have an unusual problem for which I have not been able to find a
solution on the Internet.
With Powerpoint 2003, there was no issue. With Powerpoint 2007, the user
cannot advance slides unless the file is saved locally on the client
(Windows XP SP3, ntfs filesystem).
When the file is loaded from the samba share, the user can edit and save

Multiple Office 2007 Pro PowerPoint Windows Lock Up Laptop
Hello,
I'm using MS Office 2007 Pro on Ubuntu 10.04 x64 through wine-1.3.17. After a while my laptop will just freeze (like someone took a screenshot) when I have multiple PowerPoint windows open. This problem seems to be only associated with PowerPoint and not the other Office Apps. Also, whenever I minimize the PowerPoint windows they will group together on my taskbar but little gray

how to present a table in powerpoint?
Hi,
I have a nicely printed table of results generated by R's
> print(myresult)
where myresult is a "data frame".
I am trying to put this table into a powerpoint slide for presentation without re-typing and re-formating, i.e.,
present it as it is in the R window. This saves time when there are a lot of tables to be presented.
I tried

Producing "Editable" Graphs for PowerPoint
Hello,
(apologies, I'm not entirely sure whether this question is about R or my
limitations with PowerPoint). I've submitted a paper (which has been
accepted) but the journal now require me to submit graphs that are
"editable in PowerPoint". I would be grateful for suggestions as to
how I should do this.
The best route seems to be to copy-and-paste the figures from the
