Re: unix R CMD check problem
Doh!
turns out I was using a newer feature of S-PLUS that is not supported in R,
or at least was generating the parse error.
replace all

with
a <- b
(except in arguments, naturally ...)
Sorry to bother anyone ... smooth sailing ahead.

JPEG library wierdness
I am having a problem creating JPEG's ... but just lately
I had 1.3.1 installed properly on a Solaris 2.6 platform and everything
was working fine UNTIL last Wednesday, when I issued the fateful
update.packages()
and went to lunch.
When I came back, one of my cohorts informed me he could no longer
create jpeg's in the fashion he was accustomed:

Hello people, me again ...
Just an FYI this time, I think:

IRIX, firewalls, configure
I have built R-2.0.1 on AIX64 V 6.5 on a machine that is intentionally
isolated from remotely connecting to the internet -- and we'd like to
keep it isolated!
I have not seen anything in the FAQ's or Install Manual about shutting
off or 'configuring out' the internet connectivity. ditto for
'./configure --help'

64bit build on IBM
I am trying to build R with 64bit support so I can access more than
2GB of memory on an IBM running AIX. (IBM NightHawk II RS/6000 node with 16
64-bit, 375-MHz POWER3 CPUs and 32 GB of memory, if you want specifics)
The 32bit install required little tweaking, but the 64 bit is sufficiently
complicated that I thought I would report my findings here and ask for
help with the latest (and hopefully

R package-building
Hello,
I am building a package to read in a pretty common atmospheric data format
and create a SKEW-T, log p diagram (also very common for the atmospheric
community).
The problem is this: How should one address the (ASCII) data files so that
the examples find them? I have read through the "Writing R Extensions"
document and still have a problem.
There seems to be some sort of

Slowdown when copying large files
I am currently investigating using samba on a Linux box to provide file
server services on our NT LAN (I'm a bit sick of NT doing dummy spits on
me). I'm running RH5.1, and have just upgraded samba to
samba-1.9.18p8-51.3 (using the rpm from
http://samba.anu.edu.au/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/redhat/RPMS/5.1/samba-
1.9.18p8-51.3.i386.rpm)
The setup includes several NT servers, one set up as

Pb with 2.0.6/2.0.7 and browsing
Hello,
When my Samba is the local master browser, it doesn't appear in the
Network Neighborhood of the client. There is only the client itself.
When the client (Windows NT 4 Workstation) is the local master, the
Network Neighborhood shows the only two nodes that I have on my test
network, ie the Samba server and the NT 4 Workstation.
For the browsing, I use the default

Best small server config
Hi,
Busy with dovecot on a linux server with not very much RAM in it (512
MB max total).
On this server dovecot will only handle about 12 users,
with never more than 3 IMAP webmail users at a time,
and a maximum of 2 POP3 users at a time using it.
I'm going all secure later on, but first I would like your opinion on
what configuration best to use with, say, max 5 users busy at one time,

more subroutines for integrate()
I was pleased to find integrate() using the quadpack routines "dqags" and
"dqagi". However, I would also like to have the routine "dqawoe"
included. This routine is summarized as follows...

c integrand with oscillatory cos or sin factor,
c clenshaw-curtis method, (end point) singularities,

dovecot 1.0.2, sieve 1.0.2 and regex
I've just ported a largeish procmail script across to sieve and want to
get to use wildcards in filing mail and can't seem to get regex to work.
The script starts nicely with:
> require ["fileinto","regex","envelope","vacation","regex"];
and a bit down these few lines comes into play:

Migration from NT
Hi All,
At present I am running a largeish (~450 stations) NT based network
(with win2k/XP clients) in a school in the UK, and I am looking into the
feasability of moving to samba 3+LDAP over the summer. Has anyone had
much experience of this, and are there any major problems? My concerns
are with the following:
- Seamless transition from NT to Samba without having to re-add user

--max-vsize
Hi,
In both R 2.13 and the SVN trunk, I observe odd behaviour with the
--max-vsize command-line argument:
1. passing a largeish value (about 260M or greater) makes mem.limits()
report NA for the vsize limit; gc() continues to report a value...
2. ...but that value (and the actual limit) is wrong by a factor of 8.
I attach a patch for issue 2, lightly tested. I believe that fixing

Sparse matrix methods
Does anyone know of contributions to R for solving sparse linear systems?
In particular for spatial stats I am interested in solving large
positive definite symmetric systems.
Thanks in advance,
