scan or source a text file into a list
I've ported somebody else's rather cumbersome Matlab model to R for
colleagues that want a free build of the model with the same type of I/O.
The Matlab model reads a text file with the initial parameters specified as:
C:\Data\Carluc\Rport>more Params.R
# Number of years to simulate
nYears = 50;
# Initial year for graphing purposes
year0 = 1970;
# NPP/GPP ratio (cpp0 unitless)

Markov transition matrices , missing transitions for certain years
Hi all,
I am working for nest box occupancy data for birds and would like to
construct a Markov transition matrix, to derive transition probabilities for
ALL years of the study (not separate sets of transition probabilities for
each time step). The actual dataset I'm working with is 125 boxes over 14
years that can be occupied by 7 different species, though I have provided a

performing operations on a dataframe
Hey all,
I feel like the solution to this problem should be relatively simple, but
for some reason I can't find answers or come up with my own solution.
Given the dataframe:

each year)

[nbdkit PATCH v2 10/17] plugins: Add .fork_safe field
Allow a plugin field to declare whether a parallel plugin can tolerate
windows where fds are not CLOEXEC, or must take precautions to avoid
leaking fds if the plugin may fork. For safety reasons, the flag
defaults to off, but many in-tree plugins can set it to on (most
commonly because they don't fork after .config_complete; for libvirt
because it is documented to clean up fds on fork so it

Efficient coding
I have a piece of code as the one at the bottom, unfortunately since it involves time series from a db it's not easy to give to mailing list a working script.
It becomes very slow after few hundred iterations over variable sp (must process several thousands).
The Rprof() indicates that the problem is the use of gc(). Can someone indicate what I have to take care of not to call gc() so often?

Dyn.load of sharing object with GSL library
Following the recommendation of Prof. Ripley, I have created the Makevars
file with the line:
PKG_LIBS="-L/usr/lib/libm -lm -L/usr/local/lib/libgsl -lgsl -L/usr/local/lib
/libgslcblas -lgslcblas"
in the working directory.
Now I have the code file Example3.c which computes the Bessel function value
(the example is taken from the GSL reference book).
I am running:
R CMD SHLIB Example3.c

Dear all,
I am trying to use the function odfWeave. Unfortunately I cannot get
beyond the folllowing error message:
"
Error in odfWeave("Example3.rnw", "Example3.odf") :

Can anybody tell me, how to use this function?
Thanks,

R lmer with problem of 'sd slot has negative entries'
Dear R Users,
I want to fit GLMM with lmer with binomial data and a one-way random
effects model with an overall mean and random effects. From R help,
Laplace is slower than PQL, but more accurate. When I fit my model with
Laplace method with
control = list (usePQL = FALSE)),
for most data sets it works well, but for some I get an error message
(Error in if (any(sd < 0))

lmer giving negative, or no, estimated standard errors
R Users,
Emine Bayman sent this out earlier and we do not think it went through.
Appologies if it did.
We want to fit GLMM with lmer with binomial data and a one-way random
effects model (overall mean is a fixed effect and there are random
effects for each binomial).
We are using the Laplace method. We are simulating multiple data sets
and use the
Laplace method with control = list

Select element out of several ncdf variables
Hi there
I'm working with ncdf data. I have different dataset for 4 runs, 4 seasons
and 3 timeslices (48 datasets in total). The datasets have the following
dimensions: 96 longitudes, 48 latitudes and 30 time steps. To read all of
them in, I wrote the following loop:
runs <- c("03","04","05","06")
years <- c(1851,1961,2061)

restricting mails from "mail" command to specific domains only in postfix
Hi Friends,
I have configured Postfix mail server on Centos for relaying mails
from 5 linux servers (including itself) within the same LAN. The
postfix mail server should relay mails from these 5 linux servers for
specific domains only. For example hosts 192.168.0.23/24/25/26/27 and
the postfix mail server should only be able to receive and send mails
from and to example.com,example2.com and

[PATCH nbdkit 1/4] build: Move list of plugins and filters to the configure script.
It's easier to get it to other places if it starts out in the
configure script.
Also split the list into language and non-language plugins.

How to send mail to mailbox with disabled domain?
Is this a dovecot problem on your side? dovecot usually accepts mail
from MTA like postfix, so it would be better to remove example1.com from
postfix relaydomains (mailbox domains, alias domains, ...). Then there
is no delivery to dovecot. Most MTAs ignore MX records - if a domain is
configured locally, it gets delivered.
Best regards

Question: xyplot panel configurations for Trellis package
Hi,
I am new to R community and I have a question on panel configurations in
the Trellis package.
Particularly, I have the following code:
require(lattice)
plotTable <- NULL
Date <- seq(as.Date("2006-11-01"), as.Date("2009-12-01"), by = 1)
nYear <- length(unique(format(Date,"%Y")))
plotTable$Date <- as.Date(paste(unique(format(Date, "%Y-%m")),

Hi,
I use a OpenLDAP for authentication. To authenticate a full DN as the user name must be used, like "cn=jim,ou=users,dc=example,dc=com". There are several domains, like example2.com and example3.com. I want to use Dovecot with ldap and authentication binds. For testing I use "auth_bind_userdn = cn=%n,ou=users,dc=%d" and the user name must provide as "jim at

ggplot2: how to combine position=stack and position=dodge in a single graph?
Hi ggplot experts,
I need to plot two time series of stacked data: a barchart with bars for
each month. To compare the data of two years I need to combine both time
series with in a single graph via position=doge.
How should I do that?
I tried the following scenario:
I added two layers with the time series of the stacked data for both
years. That worked well exept the bars are obscuring each
