RGui error on Windows 2000
The following might be of benefit to those who find themselves in a similar
predicament with an apparently corrupted R in Windows 2000.
The problem was traced back to a corrupted register in my user profile in
Windows 2000 apparently caused by a DLL in Visual Basic installation not
self registering correctly.
The fix was to copy a new uncorrupted register from the default user. Though

windows focus and setting active device
Dear R users,
I am using R 5.1 on Windows 2000. Is there a system call or somesuch way of
identifying the graphic window which currently has focus and using that
information to make it the active device for futher plotting etc.
I have done a quick seaqrch in R the archives using 'focus active device'
but came up with nothing useful.
Any information would be most welcome. Thanks in

vectorize an expression
Dear listers,
I'm having a bad R day. I just can't think of the vectorized equivalent of:
for (ii in 1:n) aa[ii] = bb[ii,cc[ii]]
Any suggestion received with embarrassment and gratitude

windows common dialog for color selection in R
Dear R users,
I run R on windows 2000 and windows 98
I am seeking opinion, or better still a code snippet, on what might be the
quickest, not necessarily the best or preferred way, of making the Windows
color selection common dialog available in R. Would it be an executable
called with system() or shell() or perhaps a tcltk module or have I missed
something obvious? I don't believe that I

winMenuAdd misbehaving?
Microsoft Windows R users,
I am operating Windows 2000 (build2195) with R1.7. It may be pertinent that
I am using a dual head screen with the initial RGui filing the entire area
of both screens.
When starting R I use the .First() function to add menu items to the RGui
interface using winMenuAdd() and winMenuAddItem(). The menus do not display
until the RGui window is physically manipulated in

Linking R to GIS
Dear All,
Has anyone worked with linking R to both ArcView and MapInfo GIS systems? My
desire is to capture object selection from GIS and pass to R and to return
spatially based statistical model results from R to GIS. If both could
simultaneously access the same data file this would be a bonus.
My inclination is to put together some routines based on ODBC linking but
thought I would seek like

Floating windows in TCLTK
Dear anybody dealing with TCLTK on R
I'm trying, without any success, to get a simple TCLTK window to remain
floating on top of the RGui and RConsol windows when the later have focus. I
cannot find reference in the TCKTK documentation and fear that I'm missing
something quite fundamental.
My objective is to make a simple button populated menu to invoke R
functions. I wish the TCLTK menu

Getting rid of loops?
I wrote a function to calculate cosine distances between rows of a matrix.
It uses two loops and is slow. Any suggestions to speed this up? Thanks in
advance.

for (i in 1:nrow(x)){
for(j in 1:nrow(x)){

Samba/Amiga smbclient?
Hi Rask,
I installed the GG ls, as you suggested, and some other directory commands (rm, dir,
..) as well, into amitcp:samba/bin. BIN: is assigned to this. My path looks here
first before amitcp:bin.
I still get no action for mput *, with recurs on, and mask *. Also, lcd prints nothing
as well.
Can you suggest anything else? Am I missing something else, perhaps?
Cheers, Chris.

Samba - Amiga, smbclient recurs problem
Hi All,
I'm an Amiga user of samba. All is well with server and client except recursive mput
within smbclient. It transfers nothing, and reports no errors. Can anyone help? My
samba version is 1.9.16p9.
More detail: I started with BIN: pointing to amitcp:samba/bin in which I placed sh,
as recommended. I found without recurs set that mput #? (or mput *) reported that
it could not find ls

Amiga Samba file format?
Hi Amiga Samba users,
I have an interesting problem using Samba (1.9.16) on the Amiga. Everthing works
fine for PC reads from the Amiga to the PC or dag-and-dropped onto Unix shares (which
also using Samba). However, in the other direction (i.e. at PC GUI drag a Unix file
from Unix share and drop it onto an Amiga share) this copy results in a file that
my httpd on the Amiga can't read (in the

selecting clusters of points
All:
Are there any functions out there for selecting all the
points in a region of a plot. I envision something like the
identify() function except one could circle a cloud of points (and
perhaps a vector would be returned of the same length as the points
plotted indicating logical membership in the circled cloud). Perhaps
someone has done something with the locator() function that would

Adding submenus to existing consol GUI menu
If possible I would like to add two sub-menus to the R Console under
Windows.
For example, I would like to add:
winMenuAddItem("File", "Load CSV...", "loadCSV()")
winMenuAddItem("File", "Save CSV...", "saveCSV()")
and have them appear under the initial 'File' item rather than add a new
'File' menu item. I seem to

Rprintf under windows?
Hi,
I've been using Rprintf from a shared library compiled under various
unix flavour for a while now. I get a warning about Rprintf being
undefined when constructing the library, but everything works OK after
loading.
I've also been cross compiling the same library using the mingw32 tools
for a while now, but the inclusion of Rprintf seems to be messing up
this process. It can't

Any success with RDCOMServer and R-2.0.0?
Hi Everyone,
I'm experimenting with the RDCOMServer package under R-2.0.0. I'm not
having much success yet - the methods im registering do show up in the
registry but I'm not able to call the using RDCOMClient from another
package. I'm still attempting to diagnose my problem in other ways, but
though I should check to see if there are any problems have been

argument names in generic print functions (PR#955)
Hello,
I think this is a bug, although it is possible that I'm doind something
silly.
I want to be able to determine the argument name for variables passed to
a generic print function
suppose we have
print.foo <- function(x, ...)
{
nm<-deparse(substitute(x))
cat("param name is ", nm, "\n")
}
d<-structure(1, class="foo")

R-2.0.1 and Rggobi
Hi,
I've had no luck with the combination of R-2.0.1 and Rggobi/gobi (1.1-1
and 1.0-1 beta). I've tried a default configuration of ggobi, as well
as one with all the plugins enabled. I'm using RedHat 9 Linux.
The problem I'm experiencing is a segmentation fault when library.dynam
is called from .First.lib
ggobi appears to work OK from the command line. I had an earlier

Row-binding factor variables looses the ordered attribute.
Hi everyone,
I've just notice a problem with ordered factor variables. It appears
that row-binding two ordered factors together looses the ordered
attribute. The following example happens both in R1.3.1 and R1.4.1 (on
RedHat 7.2):
> y <- ordered(gl(3,6),labels=1:3)
> y
