horizontal boxplot + xlim
Hi there,
I get a strange behaviour of a boxplot with the following code. There seems to
be a problem with the xlim-parameter. Did I do anything wrong? What else can I
do to force the boxplot to have a defined x-range?
x <- rnorm(100)
boxplot(x, notch=TRUE, xlab=parameter, xlim <- c(-4,4), horizontal = TRUE)

boxplot labels incorrect when horizontal = TRUE (PR#1207)
#Example:
y <- rnorm(10)
group <- gl(2,5)
plot(y ~ group, horizontal = TRUE) # BUG: default xlab & ylab interchanged
plot(y ~ group, horizontal = FALSE) # OK: supplies correct default xlab & ylab
# Using boxplot() instead of plot() omits default axis labels altogether
# (not sure if this is intentional):
boxplot(y ~ group, horizontal = FALSE) # no default axis labels supplied

Newbie question - struggling with boxplots
Hopefully I will not be flamed for this on the list, but I am starting out
with R and having some trouble with combining plots.
I am playing with the famous iris dataset (checking out example dataset in R
while reading through Introduction to datamining)
What I would like to do is create three graphs (combined boxplots) besides
each other for each of the three species (Setosa, Versicolour and

ggplot2 boxplot: horizontal, univariate
In ggplot2, I would like to make a boxplot that has the following properties:
(1) Contrary to default, the meaningful axis should be the horizontal axis.
Lattice does this, for instance, by
library(lattice);bwplot(~mtcars$mpg)
(2) It is *univariate*, i.e., of a single vector, say mtcars$mpg. I do not wish to make separate plots for the different values of mtcars$cyl.
(3) Nothing on the

Values in horizontal versus vertical position on 'y' axe
hi,
When I do a graph. the values on y axe are vertical position. How can I put
the values in horizontal position?

adding the mean and standard deviation to boxplots
Dear list,
How can I add the mean and standard deviation to each of the boxplots using the example provided in the boxplot function?

boxwex = 0.25, at = 1:3 - 0.2,
subset = supp == "VC", col = "yellow",
main = "Guinea Pigs' Tooth Growth",

2 bwplots - different colors
Hi all,
I would like to draw one picture which would show two different types of
boxplots using the same axes (kind of on top of each other). However, I
would like to plot each boxplot using a different color or different
shading inside the box, so they could be better distinquished from each
other... Could you help me?
Here is an example of the plot I have so far. I was only able to change

plots: layout + subtitles
Hello,
I want to create a figure that consists of a collection of 16 graphs on
4 rows. I am using
nf <- layout(matrix(seq(1,16), 4,4, byrow=TRUE), respect=TRUE)
boxplot(...
to create the layout of my 16 graphs. It works really well. However, I'd
like to add sub-titles that would apply to each row of 4 graphs. More
specifically, I'd like to have something like:

R-beta: Pictex and R
Dear R-users
It is me again with my interminables questions...
This time it is about "pictex". I understood that
pictex allows us to put our graph in a latex file
I have try the function:
> pictex (file=...)
and the answer was: "pictex" not found...
Does it mean that it is not an R-function yet?
Thank you for any feedback.

rotated and/or greek mtext in pictex()?
Greetings-
I'm aware that there's no documentation for pictex available easily (that
is, without purchasing it). I'm wondering if someone can help me with a
simple task. When generating a plot using pictex() from R, one of the
commands I use is
mtext("Dimension 2: L=xxxx", side=2, line=3)
when using X11(), this appears vertically along the Y axis; when using
pictex(), it

pictex graphics device and color
Is the pictex graphics device known not to support color?
In R 2.0.1 Patched (2004-11-17), it produced very pretty output:
## pictex(file = "modern-metatheonomy.tex", bg = "transparent");
## plotData(data);
## dev.off()
... but it appears to have ignored all color information.

barplots with pictex
Dear R People,
I want to include a barplot corresponding to a simple discrete probability
distribution in a LaTeX document. I decided to use the pictex
driver. After a certain amount of messing about, I came up the stuff
below. It does not look too bad, however, there is one very obvious piece
of weirdness, ie. the y axis terminates at 0.1 and does not extend down
further. I tried to adjust this

greek in main title
Hello,
I have written a function that demonstrates the CLT by
generating samples following the exponential distribution,
calculating the means, plotting the histogram, and drawing
the limiting normal curve as an overlay. I have the title
of each histogram state the sample size and rate (1/theta)
for the exponential (the output is actually 4 histograms),
but I can't get the greek letter theta

diagonal line through plot when using pictex()
Greetings-
I've got some plots I'd like to include in a LaTeX document; specifically,
I'd like to include them via pictex() so I can edit some of the
particulars directly. However, an odd problem is coming up: a diagonal
line is drawn from bottom-left to upper-right when using pictex(). This
does not happen using X11() or postscript() with the same series of
commands.
Any ideas why

pictex driver and bargraph shading
I'm trying to use the pictex driver for bargraphs, and the shading isn't
showing up. Is there any way to get some sort of shading in the plots? A
hatch or stipple would be fine, too; just some way to differentiate the
bars.
The postscript driver won't do, since I'm trying to embed this in a LaTeX
document which I'll use pdflatex on and \includegraphics for pdftex doesn't
