axis label rotation
Hello, I recently switch over from Splus to R and I have not been able to generate right axis labels that face inwards. This is accomplished in Splus with the command srt=270 but this option is not supported in R. In addition the par argument las=0 or 3 does not rotate the right axis labels. The editor of a journal is demanding that the right axis labels face inwards in the figures I recently

Rotating margin text
R 2.14.1 OS X Colleagues, I am making a graphic with two y-axes. I create the label for the right-side axis with: mtext(side=4, line=1, "Some text") The label is rotated 90° counterclockwise. I would prefer that it be rotated 90° clockwise. However, srt is not supported for mtext and las does not offer this option. Is there some other means to rotate the text string? Thanks in

rotating axis / mtext labels
Hello list. Is it possible to use par(srt=45) to rotate text by 45 degrees along the x-axis of a plot. Using: <code> x_names<-c("C57 Nv", "C57 Vacc", "129 Nv", "129 Vacc", "IFNgR Nv", "IFNgR Vacc") par(srt=45) mtext(font=2, x_names, side=1, line=1, at=l, cex=1.2) par(srt=0) </code> doesn't seem to work in R 2.2.0

Rotating the x-axis labels of a barplot
Dear listserv, Here is my latest formatting problem. I would like to rotate the x-axis labels by 45 degrees on a _barplot_. Apparently this is slightly different from the example given in the R FAQ, which is for rotating the x-axis labels on a scatterplot (http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#How-can-I-create-rotated-axis-labels_003f). I have adapted that code, as best I could, and

rotate column names in large matrix
Dear List, I have a large (1600*1600) matrix generated with symnum, that I am using to eyeball the structure of a dataset. I have abbreviated the column names with the abbr.colnames option. One way to get an even more compact view of the matrix would be to display the column names rotated by 90 degrees. Any pointers on how to do this would be most useful. Any other tips for displaying the

X-axis labels not displayed when changing ylim
Dear R users, I am encountering a x axis labeling problem on quite basic plots... I use the following code which displays the labels on the x-axis with a 45 degrees angle: p <- plot(myobject1, type="b", col="red",cex=1, lwd=2, axes=FALSE, ann=FALSE, ylim=c(0,70)) title(main="title", font.main=4) axis(side=1, lab=F) text(axTicks(1), par("usr")[3] - 2,

rotated labels in barplot with beside=T and multiple groups
I have a data set that I display using barplot. I don't know what you call it, but when I look at it, it looks like this: > lsu (0,0.1] (0.1,0.2] (0.2,0.3] (0.3,0.4] (0.4,0.5] (0.5,0.6] A 0.052631579 0.000000000 0.000000000 0.000000000 0.000000000 0.000000000 B 0.000000000 0.000000000 0.001007049 0.003021148 0.000000000 0.000000000 E 0.200000000 0.000000000

changing the magnification of axis annotation
Hi all, how do I change the magnification of xaxis annotation? I need a smaller axis text size in some of my plots. I tried cex.axix=0.5 in plot(), but this doesn't work. barplot(): X-Axis Labels
Hello all. I have a simple barplot with sixteen different segments. When I plot my data, only five or six of the labels are showing in the x-axis. How do go get them all to show? Can I set them at a 45.degree angle? Thank you. Rotate values on Y axis
Hi, I have been working through one of the examples on the FAQ about rotating the labels on the x axis, I need to do the same but for the y axis. I have managed to change some of the code, but I am still not getting there, there is still something wrong. My syntax is as follows: > par(mar = c(5, 7, 4, 2) + 0.1) > plot(1 : 8, yaxt = "n", ylab = "") > axis(2,

Aligning Diagonally Oriented Labels Under Bar Chart
I searched the forms (i.e., R Search)?and come up with the following suggested link: ?http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#How-can-I-create-rotated-axis-labels_003f I tried to implement what I believe was being implied by that URL and came up with the below: barplot(WorldPhones[1,], ??????? ylim=c(0, 50000), ??????? axes=FALSE, ann=FALSE, ???????

polar.plot
Hi, Two questions: 1 - Say I have average speed and directions for tide and I would like to plot them on a polar plot, but with different colors so I can indicate the two directions. I'm using polar.plot from the plotrix library. How can I add a second "b" and "dir.b" series to a polar.plot? library(plotrix) a = 3 dir.a = 85 b = 4 dir.b = 250 polar.plot(a, dir.a, start =

adjusting x-axis labels
I am trying to tweak how my categorical x-axis labels are formatted in my bar graph. Specifically, I would like to a) decrease the spacing between lines (e.g. spacing between Dialium and guianensis) b) right justify the text and c) have each species name align with the center of the corresponding bar graph. A simplified version of my code thus far is as follows. I am using RStudio v.

equivalent of Splus command axis(..., srt=45, adj=1) in R
Dear R-users moving from Splus to R (under Windows), I notice that command "srt" within a plot in the original Splus code is ignored by R. For example, if a plot something and then include the line of code axis(1, at=Time, labels=Text, srt=45, adj=1) the srt=45 command within the axis() command fails to draw Text at 45 degrees on the x-axis in R but it works properly in Splus. I will

Labelling a second y-axis
Hi, I am using the following code as an example function to create multiple y-axes on one plot. I have it working fine however, I can't seem to add a label on the second (right) axis. I have tried adding ylab="y2" in the axis call but, that didn't work; any ideas? Thanks, Jesse Code: function() { par(las=1,xaxs="r",mai=c(1,0.75,1,1)) x<-1:10 y1<-x

How to rotate axis labels? 2009
Hi, while searching for a solution i found many solutions in the internet. But the postings seemed to be many years old and the workaround was a dirty hack like this: http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#How-can-I-create-rotated-axis-labels_003f Now its the year 2009 and there might have been some improvement... Does anyone know a nice and easy way to turn labels on the y axis in the

using text on the x axis ticks rather than numbers
Hello, is there a way in which I can use text labels rather than numbers on the x axis ticks? I basically have a vector of (say) 8 points and I want to plot these sequentially. Thus the x axis would have ticks at 1 .. 8. Rather than having the labels 1 .. 8 I would like to have some arbitrary text labels. Ideally I would like the labels to be rotated (say at 45 degrees) so that they don't
