Managing Data
Hello everyone,
Can someone point me to some resources on managing data in R and/or S-plus?
I have started using R more and more often in my work and I really like it.
But, managing data is very different in R and S-Plus than in other packages
that I am accustomed to. I know that it is an option to use different
workspaces for different projects or to store all objects as source and read
them

Managing Data [Summary]
A while ago I asked about data management approaches in R. I was asked by
several people to post a summary of the responses and alas I am just getting
around to doing it. I received several comments, both on and off list.
Below is a compilation of these responses. Hope this is as helpful to
others as it was to me.
Best,
Brett

Factor Analysis
Thanks to Brian Ripley for the time and effort put into developing the
factanal package for R. I have found it very useful. However, in trying to
replicate some results from previous research, I have run into the need for
a couple of extensions and was wondering if they might find their way into
future implementations.

R Applied Regression Text
Is this text publicized? I ran across it doing an internet search. I have
never seen any reference to it and it is not on CRAN under documentation.

Item Analysis and Cronbach's Alpha (Code Attached)
A short function I wrote for the purpose of evaluating scales made up of a
number of questionnaire items. It provides Cronbach's Alpha, both
unstandardized and based on standardized items. It also provides item
statistics which include item-total correlations (corrected) and
item-removed alpha. Thought some of you might find it useful. I would also
appreciate any programming tips or

An R interface to Model Building
Hello all,
To anyone who is interested, I'm trying to learn a bit more about
developing applications in R with user interfaces. I've been playing
around with gWidgets to develop a model building interface.
I'd appreciate any comments, suggestions, or guidance on how to better
structure my R code and organize the programming task. In addition,
any suggestions for features and

HLM in R
Does anyone know of code to conduct hierarchical (that is, multi-level)
models using R. Beyond simply requiring a nested design, I want to model
explicitly the covariance between levels as is done in such multi-level
modeling software as HLM or MLwin and discussed in Goldestein (1999)

Opening Data Via FTP
Hello all,
I am trying to read a table in via ftp, something like this:
read.table("ftp://ftp.the.file.com/the/directory/file.txt")
The trouble with that is, our ftp server is picky and wants my username and password. Oh, bother. My question: Is there a way to send user/pass and read the file into R?
I am using R 1.5.1 on Windows 98.
Thanks,

DLL error after update.packages
When updataing packages from CRAN, I got the following error message:
updating HTML package descriptions
Warning message:
DLL attempted to change FPU control word from 8001f to 9001f
Everything seems fine, the packages updated, just wondering what this was. R 1.6.2 on Windows 98. Details on the packages dowloaded are below.

dataplot oen source? (was: RE: FW: re: GUI's for teaching)
IIRC, the license stated in the source code of dataplot is rather
restrictive. I don't think one is allowed to use the source as can be done
with GPL code.
Cheers,
Andy

Generating Data for Simulation
Are there any R packages that could be used to generate random data given a
set of parameters? Or, if not a package, how would one generate such data?
What I would like to do is simulate some sample data for a regression model
given a set of population covariances and distribution parameters to be used
in a MC simulation.
Thanks for any tips.

modifying a vector
Hello everyone,
Thanks to all who offered suggestions after my initial query to the list.

skipping columns with read.fwf?
I have a file in fwf. It is rather large, about 40,000 rows and 40 variables (columns). I only need about 10 variables form the data set for the analysis at hand. Unfortunately, these 10 variables are not contiguous in the file, for example, the first is position 1-8, the next position 25-27, then 40.
Is there a way to read the selected varaibles that I need without reading in the entire data

FW: re: GUI's for teaching
Have a look at the GUI on dataplot, NIST's plotting software. It is implemented in tcl/tk. The site states it is "public domain software" -- open source? I can't find anything about the license. In any case...

sftp batch mode and password authentication
Hi all,
I used to execute ftp in batch mode to dowload files. In my case, password
authentication is the only way to get remote access. Could anyone tell me
how can i accomplish the same task using sftp under batchmode as what i have
done with ftp ? Meanwhile, how can i specify the password securely ? Is
there anyother alternatives ?

Ogg Pages Play Time?
Are all audio pages in a Ogg/Vorbis stream the same size? do they have the
same playback duration?
I am developing a P2P streaming application where each client has to dowload
the Ogg/Vorbis pages from other clients (peers) but I need to know how much
time I have to download the next Ogg/Vorbis page before the playback reaches
it.
Something like

Two Easy questions
Sorry all for these two easy questions:
First, I have a matrix with trhee columns:

Name Eight Puntuation
Pepe 1,85 10
Paco 1,7 7
Pablo 1,82 6
I want to scatter the two columns (I could use pairs or other functions...)
but the only doubt is that I cannot find the way to add in the associated
intersection (the point scattered) the label "Pepe" "Paco" and so

Plugin auto_complete
Hi all !
I began to develop Rails applications with Aptana Radrails under
Windows. For that I had successfully installed auto_complete plugin and
succeeded to use it.
Now I have an iMac and I''m trying to restart my developments under OS X.
My problem is: when I run the command ''script/plugin install
auto_complete'', the result is:
