X11 resources
Would it be hard to make the X11 device driver in R accept general X11
resources? In particular I would like to be able to set the title of
the graphics window when I start it up. (Note this is not the same
thing as the title of a plot but rather is the character string
visible to the window manager, and usually goes in a titlebar on top.)
For example in Splus one can do

porting R package to Splus
I am considering getting the rpvm package for running a parallel
virtual machine working on Splus. That package contains a
considerable amount of C-level code written to interface R with the
pvm3 library functions and of course all of it uses the R macros and
conventions associated with the R-style ".Call".
It looks as though it might be possible to automatically transform
that code to

ylab in time series plot (PR#2869)
You get a warning message when you specify a ylab parameter while
plotting data whose x's are POSIXct values. Apparently the
`axis.POSIXct' method tries to reset the ylab---via the ...
parameter---after it has already been set by higher level methods.
Here is a function that illustrates the problem.
ylabProblem <- function() {
x <- ISOdate(2003, 4, 1:10) # POSIXct

R and Scheme
I've read in many places that R semantics are based on Scheme semantics. As
a long-time Lisp user and implementor, I've tried to make this more precise,
and this is what I've found so far. I've excluded trivial things that
aren't basic semantic issues: support for arbitrary-precision integers;
subscripting; general style; etc. I would appreciate corrections or
additions from

ylab in plot.POSIXct
I am using R-1.7.0 and have some data which consist of one vector of
numbers and a second corresponding vector of dates belonging to the
POSIXct class. I would like to plot the numbers against the dates.
What is the best way to do this?
It almost works to just call `plot.' However if I do this while using
the `ylab' parameter I get a warning message:

Calling R (GNU R) functions from Common Lisp, how?
Hi Lisp users,
I'm a user of both Common Lisp and R (GNU R).
I found R has a rich collection of statistical and numerical
computation functions, while it is not as extensible as Lisp (Common
Lisp).
I considered Lisp-Stat but its only implementation is not in the
usuall Common Lisp, and the available functions in CRAN are far richer
than Lisp-Stat currently has.
I want to know if there is

Calling LISP programs in R
I have written some programs in Common Lisp and I have been using SAS to pipe
those programs to my lisp compiler in batch mode by using the %xlog and
%xlst SAS commands. I wonder if there is in R a similar way to pipe commands
to LISP so that all my work would be concentrated in R even when I have to
call a LISP program? I have looked at the foreign library but this seems to
adjust data types not

[LLVMdev] 2.2 garbage collector questions

I wanted to roll out my own lisp, and maybe use some library code from existing
lisps (think of loop or format). Adding an LLVM backend to an existing lisp
implementation is a nice idea, but currently not planned.

Lisp-like primitives in R
I mainly program in Common Lisp and use R for statistical analysis.
While in R I miss the power and ease of use of Lisp, especially its many
primitives such as find, member, cond, and (perhaps a bridge too far)
loop.
Has anyone created a package that includes R analogs to a subset of Lisp
functions?

new bquote feature splice does not address a common LISP @ use case?
Dear R-devel,
There is a new feature in R-devel, which explicitly refers to LISP @
operator for splicing.
> The backquote function bquote() has a new argument splice to enable splicing a computed list of values into an expression, like ,@ in LISP's backquote.
Although the most upvoted SO question asking for exactly LISP's @
functionality in R doesn't seems to be addressed by this

access to R parse tree for Lisp-style macros?
R folks, I'm curious about possible support for Lisp-style macros in
R. I'm aware of the "defmacro" support for S-Plus and R discussed
here:
http://www.biostat.wustl.edu/archives/html/s-news/2002-10/msg00064.html
but that's really just a syntactic short-cut to the run-time use of
substitute() and eval(), which you could manually put into a function
yourself if you cared

Porting let* from Common LISP to R
In porting some Common LISP code to R, I am trying to found out whether special
care must be taken for the let* function. In Common LISP, "the let* block
is like
let except it is guaranteed to evaluate the initialization of its local
variables in sequentially nested scopes, i.e. it provides an order to the
binding and visibility of preceding variables.".
I have included the recursive

How to start R with a file loaded?
Hi!
I've made great progress in my R programming, but I am again stuck on a
beginner's problem.
I would like to start R with a command line that loads a file, and if
possible, executes a function.
Can anyone give me an example of how to do this?
For example, in lisp, I would say:
$ lisp -load toto.lisp -eval '(do-something $PORT)'
to load the file "toto.lisp", then

with_scope and filters for Rails 1.1 (scoped_access plugin)
Has anyone successfully gotten the scoped_access[1] plugin to work in
Rails 1.1? Some of the methods it was relying on are now no longer
accessible. It seems the only way to add scope is to use the
''with_scope'' method that takes a block, but since Rails doesn''t have
real around filters[2] I cannot see a way of adding a scope using a
filter.
Anyone using with_scope

Sending "..." to a C external
I'm trying to figure this out with "Writing R Extensions" but there's not a
lot of detail on this issue.
I want to write a (very simple really) C external that will be able to take
"..." as an argument.
(It's for optimizing a function that may have several parameters besides the
ones being optimized.)
I got the "showArgs" code (from R-exts) to compile and

reading lisp file in R
Thanks! I am trying to use it in R. (Actually, I try to give my students experiences with different kinds of files and I was wondering if there were tools available for such kinds of files. I don't know Lisp so I do not actually know what the lines towards the bottom of the file mean.(
Many thanks for your response!
Best wishes,

[LLVMdev] Questions about attaching DWARF source code debugging information to generated LLVM-IR.
Hey folks,
I'm wrestling with adding DWARF source code file/line information to my generated LLVM-IR from my Common Lisp compiler.
I think I'm doing everything properly using the llvm::DIBuilder class - but when I load my Common Lisp application and load a compiled bundle into it I don't seem to be able to access the metadata properly.
I can list source lines using "l -f

[LLVMdev] 2.2 garbage collector questions
Hello,
i want to implement a common lisp subset using llvm for fun. This
requires the use of a garbage collector. I read the docs, but many
things are still unclear to me.
1. how are collectors supposed to find all living objects? there is
llvm.gcroot for marking objects on the stack, but how do collectors crawl
heap objects? I did not see a way to provide custom mark functions. Are
