Equations as arguments to functions
I am trying to pass an equation as an arguement to a function, which seems pretty straightforward given lazy evaluation. I constructed the following little test to make sure I sort of knew what I was doing: go <- function(X,eq) { C <<- X*2; d <<- eq} a _ rnorm(100) go(10,eq=a[.5*length(a)]+C+1) > C [1] 20 > d [1] 21.10551 > a[.5*length(a)] [1] 0.1055086 Everything

Creating a pixel image
I am trying to create a pixel image from the marks of a marked spatial point pattern for use with the Kinhom function in the spatstat library and am having some difficulty. Is there a way to create such an object using x-y coordinates and values at those coordinates? Many Thanks, Michael Lawton

An applied math question with solve()
I have a math (and maybe an R) question. I want to find equilibrium population density values for a system of linear population growth equations (e.g., Pimm and Lawton 1977). The eventual goal is to perform stability analysis. I can find the partial differential equations for the Jacobian matrix, but I get stuck trying finding the equilibriuym pop densities (X*). Here is the (incorrect?) R code

NT PDC and SAMBA file server
Okay leave it to me to screw crap up! This worked before i started to play with some machine's ip addresses. Now im screwed and its not working at all. I will go through everything i have done from start and hopefully someone can tell me what I need to do to fix it. Please make two notes before you read this, i am not the person who setup the samba server on this linux box(running Debian)

combinations
I need to construct all possible combinations of an vector of length N taken X at a time for simulation purposes. Taking a a small vector as an example: >input <- c('a','b','c','d') >somefunction(input) a,b,c a,b,d a,c,d b,c,d my only solution thus far is: somefunction <- function(x){ ...a series of grotesque and horribly inefficient loops

x axis point labels
I am attempting to manually specify x axis value labels (NOT x axis label as in xlab) on a density plot. Generally speaking, I would like to erase the default x axis point labels and replace them with arbitrary x axis point labels relating to specific CDF points. I am sure this can be done, but it isn't obvious to me how. Has anyone done this before? My R code follows if it helps (new

Sweave & xtable
I am just starting to learn Sweave (really neat tool). I am pretty early in the learning curve (I had to think a moment ago whether a # or % was the appropriate comment character). I have successfully incorporated simple graphics and outputs, but am having trouble getting a latex (xtable) table to function properly. Latex is seemingly treating the xtable code as input or verbatim text. That

predict assistance
I have a question regarding application of model coefficients between datasets. In particular, I have several datasets which I would like to apply a model estimated from only a single dataset (sort of a crude - out of sample application - to show the variances). lets say, names(a) [1] "stdnoi" "momentum" "tbm3" "metcons" "premium"

summary: printing to Win95 local printer
I tried to setup samba to print to a win95 box and I was using lpd from RH7.3 After trying everything I found Cups and looked at the docs and it prints great to the win95 Local Printer. Thanks for your help -- Ron Bramblett Sys Admin Fuller Brush Company

function design
I have a, no doubt, simple question. I wish to write a function such that a <- 9 b <- 10 changer _ function(x,y) { if (y>x){ x <<- Y+1}} Of course there are easier ways to accomplish the task above, but I am more interested in how to have the "x <<- Y+1" part of the function to change x in place for purposes of a much larger function. I have been wrestling with

Generalized Lambda
Anyone know of a package for numerically estimating lambda(3) and lambda(4) using location, position, skew and kurtosis estimates. I have a distribution and would like to use the gld package to do some simulations of the distribution, but need the lambda estimates to feed into gld. I have a program in Maple, which I may convert to C code for use in R, but before moving down that road I

Problem with a if statement inside a function
I have a really long functions, and at the end of the function, I am using a if statement to tag certain keywords based on whether they have certain values contained in them. However, the if statement doesn't seem to work. When I had split up the commands into various functions, it worked fine, but I'm not sure what going on now that it's combined into a single function. myfunc

toupper does not work in sub + regex
Hi, I don't know what I am doing wrong to the toupper does not seem working in sub + regex. The following returns 's' not the upper class 'S' as I expect: sub("q_([a-z])[a-zA-Z]*",toupper('\\1'),"q_sviRaw") Can someone tell me where I did wrong? Thanks, Richard [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Applying "toupper" to only portions of text strings
Colleagues Assume that I have a vector containing some text strings, some of which contain a particular character. I could like to apply "toupper" to the text before the character. For example (in this case, "|" is the particular character): ORIGINAL: TEXT <- c("aaaa", "bbb|cc", "|ddd") AFTER APPLICATION OF toupper: TEXT <-

Question about islower() in ctype.h (ANSI compat headers test)
Hi, So far with the latest changes the projects I am trying to port works fine, except for a mismatch on what is considered the ansi behaviour of islower() in ctype.h: ----- i = 220 islower (i) = 0, ISLOWER (i) = 0 toupper (i) = 220, TOUPPER (i) = 220 i = 221 islower (i) = 0, ISLOWER (i) = 0 toupper (i) = 221, TOUPPER (i) = 221 i = 222 islower (i) = 0, ISLOWER (i) = 0 toupper (i) = 222, TOUPPER

matching-case sensitivity
Hi All, I am trying to match two character arrays (email lists) using either pmatch(), match() or charmatch() functions. However the function is "missing" some matches due to differences in the cases of some letters between the two arrays. Is there any way to disable case sensitivity or is there an entirely better way to match two character arrays that have identical entries but written

as.data.frame doesn't set col.names
You left out all the most important bits of information. What is yo? Are you trying to assign a data frame to a single column in another data frame? Printing head(samples) tells us nothing about what data types you have, especially if the things that look like text are really factors that were created when you used one of the read.*() functions. Use str(samples) to see what you are dealing with.
